Gianpaolo Paglia, an agronomist born and bred in Maremma, and Justine Keeling, an English marketing manager, bought the estate in 1997. They started making Morellino di Scansano , with the existing 6 Ha of old and high quality producing vineyards, whilst at the same time planting new vineyards using local varieties such as Sangiovese and Alicante. Additionally, they also built an modern winery and warehousing in 2002. Poggio Argentiera has emerged as one of Scansano's best wineries and it is today composed of two estates situated in two different areas of Tuscany's Maremma, near the town of Grosseto. At Podere Adua there is the head office, cellar as well as the winery and it is close to the Maremma Natural Park, in the coastal region of Grosseto. The second estate, Podere Keeling, is found in the hilly area to the North of the Scansano district, towards Monte Amiata. From the winerys oldest vineyards this swwet Alicante is harvested at least 15 days later than that of normal grapes, at which point the grapes are transferred to a 'Fruttaio.' In this room, air circulates freely through boxes containing the grapes, while temperature and humidity never exceed 19°C and 50 % respectively. After drying a month in these conditions, the original weight of the grapes has been reduced by approximately 30%. Once out of the Fruttaio the grapes are transferred as they are, including stems, to small, open, oak barrels with natural yeasts and without temperature control. Punching down of the skins is done manually, and the fermentation is stopped by taking the temperature down to 5°C when the alcohol cont. is about 13,5 % and the sugar content 130 gr/L. The wine is then moved into second year barrels for about 4 months and bottled in 375 ml bottles after the fining process and a sterile filtration. The wine is 100% Alicante, a variety typical to many local vineyards, . Traditionally, these two grapes are blended to make Morellino di Scansano . Here, they have taken Alicante on its own and put it centre-stage, where it can show off notes of elderflower, sun-dried tomato, liquorice, chocolate and spices, finely woven tannins and a fascinating inky colour. Drink it with chocolate or strong cheese to discover its personality at its best. This is a very labour-intensive, hand-made wine and so very few bottles are made. Available in 37.5 cl Half Bottles. (12 x 37.5 cl)

Benoit and Bernard Cantin CUVEE EMELINE Bourgogne Irancy
Description: Irancy is a very picturesque ancient wine growing village nestling at the bottom of a valley that opens out onto the right bank of the Yonne River 15 kilometres from Auxerre. The vines are mainly planted on marl slopes overlooking the Cotes des Bars, and there is a considerable amount of limestone soil. Irancy, generally, is a brilliant ruby-red hued wine with a robust flavour, usually when the Pinot Noir has been blended with the local variety, the Cesar. The Cuvee Emeline sees some wood and displays headier scents of black-skinned fruit with a hint of spice and leather. The wines may appear austere in youth, but they grow elegant and spirited after a few years' ageing or with a stint in a decanter. (6 x 75 cl)

Domaine Des Roches Neuves TERRES CHAUDES Saumur-Champigny
Description: Serious wines are produced at this estate run by the charismatic Thierry Germain. His approach is closer to a Burgundy wine-maker than a typical Loire producer. This 50-acre domaine, situated in a superb viticultural location in the appellation of Saumur Champigny, has been a winery since 1850. Germain, from a long line of Bordeaux winemakers, arrived here in 1991, attracted by the region's perfect balance of grape varietal, climate and terroir, which he considers one of the finest in France. The vineyard is worked in a natural way with the goal of keeping the vine and the soil at its healthiest . The harvest is manual, selecting grapes at their very ripest level. Vinification is handled in small batches with bottling unfined and unfiltered. The Terres Chaudes, from organically cultivated grapes grown on the unique tufa-rich soil , is as seductive while yields are a mere 35hl/ha. The grapes macerate for 25 days before undergoing malolactic fermentation. Half the wine is matured in barrels that have been used before, the other half is kept in stainless steel. It is bottled twelve months later when the complexity of aroma is revealed and the tannins have balanced out. The colour is dark-ruby, with purple highlights while the bouquet is marked by cassis and blackberries. The palate is dense, with fat fruit, a beautiful structure and fine, ripe tannins. (6 x 75 cl)
