Vergelegen RESERVE SELECTION Shiraz Helderburg RSA
Description: The first vines to grace Vergelegen's soil were planted in 1700 by Willem Adriaan van der Stel. Some of the varietals planted were Blue Muscadel, Steendruif , White Muscadel and Frontinjac. Today the vineyards at Vergelegen range in altitude from 140 metres above sea level to 310 metres with slopes facing North to North-West and South to South- East. Temperatures are monitored at three automatic and six manually read stations indicate a two degree Celsius difference between the lower, north to north-west facing slopes and the higher plateau and south facing slopes. The climate is mild due to the proximity of False Bay and generally falls within the lower Region 111 by Degree-Days classification. While twenty-one soil types have been identified on Vergelegen and these generally have a very high clay content. Vines have been planted on Clovelly, Glenrosa and Pinedene with cultivars and rootstock selected to best match each soil type, and all the vines are trained vertically onto hedge trellis. The current plantings are Cabernet Sauvignon , Merlot , Cabernet Franc , Shiraz , Sauvignon Blanc , Semillon and Chardonnay . Dark ruby coloured wine with violets, spice, chocolate, black and red berry fruit on the nose. Elegant on the palate, the tannins are ripe and soft and the wine has a long clean aftertaste. Description: When making the Stone Cellars Sauvignon Blanc, Winemaker Mary Sullivan focused on retaining the bright crisp fruit flavors of Sauvignon Blanc and highlighting the wine with subtle undertones of toasty vanilla and rich creamy peaches. In the final blend, Mary chose to complement the green apple and crisp citrus of the Sauvignon Blanc with approximately nine-percent Semillon for depth, complexity, and fullness with slight amounts of Gewürztraminer for a floral and spice notes and Chenin Blanc for a peachy softness. To round out the flavors with toasty, spice nuances, she barrel fermented a portion of the wine in French and American oak barrels for approximately two months. (12 x 75 cl)

Odfjell Vineyards ARMADOR Merlot Maipo Valley Chile
Description: Over 20 years ago, the pioneering Norwegian Armador, Dan Odfjell discovered and fell in love with a small corner of the famous Maipo Valley, Chile. Born of rain in Bergen, Norway, he could not resist the attraction of the austral sun in this Virgilian setting. Serendipity would later show that he had found land in Chile's premium red wine producing valley, where vitis vinifera has been cultivated since the 17th century. Here a soothing coastal breeze produces a microclimate conducive to distinct and beautiful wines on the 85 hectares planted to Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Carmenere, Syrah, Cabernet Franc and Malbec. This hand harvested Merlot is from the Estate vineyards in Maipo Valley and is partly aged in new and used oak barrels. The wine has a deep crimson color with sherry reflexes while the aromas are ripe and complex on the nose, with notes of strawberry, plum, quince and vanilla. Well balanced on the palate, this Merlot offers a juicy attack with finesse and a full body. Nice oak flavours accompany the ripe tannin on a long and intense finish. (6 x 75 cl)
