Vidal Wines, founded in 1905, is one of Hawke's Bays oldest boutique wineries, and is a producer of premium quality wines that truly reflect the region and vineyards from which they were sourced. Vidal Wines gained its name from its founder, Anthony Joseph Vidal. He was 22 years old when he arrived in New Zealand from Spain in 1888. He moved North to Hawke's Bay where in 1905 he purchased a small property in Hastings. Once the stables that occupied the site were converted into a cellar, Anthony set about planting some grapevines. Thereafter, success lead to expansion with further vineyard plantings in Te Awanga and then Te Mata. Passing from family memebr to family member, the Vidal family made a decision to sell in the early 1970's and for a while the winery experienced some instability. This changed in 1976 when George Fistonich bought the winery and began to steadily restore the Vidal reputation as a quality wine producer. Warm, late-summer weather in Hawke's Bay provides perfect ripening conditions for both varieties. Fermented separately and then aged 12 months in French and American oak barriques. Excellent structure and fruit.

Ca' dei Frati RONCHEDONE Lugana Veneto
Description: Marzemino and Sangiovese are the main grapes for the 2005 Ronchedone, together with a maximum of 10% of Cabernet Sauvignon. It has a good depth of colour and perfumes of spicy red fruits on the nose. On the palate it has excellent concentration of spicy, jammy fruit with rounded, soft tannins and good acidity. Good structure supporting the ripe fruit character gives it a nice balance and attractive weight. Over the past decade, the Dal Cero family has transformed their Ca’ dei Frati property into a model Italian estate. When we first began buying their wines in 1987, they had 12 hectares of vineyard; today, they have 50. This increase in quantity has been matched by an increase in quality, and today they remain the best producers in Lugana. The quality of their vineyards is the secret of their success. Many producers in the zone overcrop and train the vines high. At Ca’ dei Frati, the vines are trained low, newer vineyards have a higher density of planting, and yields are well below the average for the zone. (6 x 75 cl)

Description: The wines of Lucien Boillot et Fils aren't the type to take a back seat. They have been variously described as meaty, substantial, tannic, robust, spicy and austere. People talk of them having a big presence on the palate. Sons Pierre and Louis Boillot now manage the domaine. There style is powerful and a wine that will cellar and soften, for years. This Pinot Noir has a lovely purple red colour. Refined forrest fruit aromas are evident is this chunky wine with red plum fruit and vivid acidity opening well on the palate with a long finish. La Spinetta CA'DI PIAN Barbera D'Asti
Description: The Rivetti family story begins in the 1890s, when Giovanni Rivetti, grandfather of the three Rivetti brothers, Carlo, Bruno and Giorgio, left Piedmont for Argentina. Like many Italians of that time, he dreamed of returning rich and a powerful man, perhaps even one day able to make a great wine in his homeland. He never did, though his son, Giuseppe did. Pin married Lidia, bought vineyards and began to make wine. In 1977 the family took up residence at La Spinetta in Castagnole Lanze and still run the estate today. This Barbera has spent 12 months entirely in new, medium toasted French oak to produce a ruby red coloured wine with purple reflections. A very dense bouquet is showing scents of Marasca cherry, violets followed by plum. The palate fresh and fruity while the acidity is balanced by generous alcohol and mild tannins. (12 x 75 cl)

Description: Houghton Wines, based in the heart of the Swan Valley, contains a wealth of romantic history. Named after Lieutenant Colonel Richmond Houghton in 1836, the first commercial vintage was produced in 1859 totalling 25 gallons, the foundation for one of Australia's oldest continuous winemakers. The picturesque Houghton winery property has 50 hectares planted with premium grape varieties including Verdelho, Chardonnay, Semillon and Chenin Blanc. Early documentation and current research suggests the first vines were planted between 1830 and 1836. In addition Houghton operates four of Western Australia's largest vineyards at Moondah Brook, Pemberton, Mt Barker and Frankland River, along with sourcing fruit from Margaret River, Harvey and emerging premium areas. These diverse wine regions provide the necessary fruit requirements vital for the production of premium table wines, which are distinctly Western Australian. This sparkling wine is a medium straw colour, crystal clear with a fine and persistent bead. Aged Aromas of toast and butter mushrooms are complemented with fresh yeast autolysis characters. A well structured balance of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir provides an even and balanced palate of great length. The extended bottle maturation on yeast lees gives great complexity and depth to the delicate palate. A wine of finesse finishing with crisp, natural acid.
