Fairview SOLITUDE Shiraz Paarl RSA

The texture of the soil in the Solitude vineyard contributes a very important role in the mouth feel of this wine. Colour Deep ruby red with purple tones. Palate Very full flavoured wine. Well balanced with a long rich finish. Aroma Intense red berry, vanilla and sweet spice aromas. Eenzaamheid" was settled in 1669 by a senior official of the Dutch East Indian Company, a certain Mr. Dippenauw. He had recently married a sister of Adam Tas, who was a legendary figure in early Cape Dutch history, and wine folk lore. Mr. Dippenauw had obviously impressed his superiors, as they gave him a huge farm of over 250sq kms. When the newly married couple arrived on their new farm, they were overwhelmed by its size and isolation from Capetown, and called it Eenzaamheid . Today, the farm is 885 ha, and is owned by Christo Briers Louw, whose family has had continuous ownership of the farm since 1775. Christos' intimate knowledge and understanding of his family farm led him to plant Shiraz in a section of Oakleaf soil, a gravelly decomposed shale. This is a deep uniform soil that holds moisture well, and gives Shiraz a rich full body and smooth ripe finish. The vines are trellised but not irrigated, which contribute to the remarkable balance and concentration of this wine. (6 x 75 cl)

Description: The founder Giulio Ferrari was born in 1879 and after a classical wine education that included studying at the Institute of Viticulture in Montpellier he decided to take on the french at their own game and in 1902 started his own vineyard. Successful but without a family to leave the estate too he choose a local producer to take over and develop the business. In 1952 Bruno Lunelli and his family took control and the name of the comapny was changed to Ferrari F.lli Lunelli and it has gone from strength to strength. Adopting the traditional method for producing sparkling wine this Pinot Noir and Chardonnay rose is left a minimum of 24 months on its own lees before bottling. A brilliant pink coloured sparkling wine it has a fine, persistent perlage and good effervescence. The nose is showing intense, clean and pleasing aromas of tangerine, raspberry and cherry followed by strawberry, yeasts, bread crust and peach. The mouth follows on from the nose with considerable intensity while the crisp attack and good balance lead to a persistent, enjoyable finish. (6 x 75 cl)
