Ruffino CONCENTO Rosato di Maremma IGT Tuscany
Description: World famous as a Chianti producer, during the last 25 years Ruffino have diversified their production to become one of Tuscany’s most important ambassadors for quality wine. The Folonari family’s strategy of acquiring and developing 'tenimenti' – individual estates in specialised zones – has given their portfolio great variety and personality. Ruffino now owns a total of 1.500 ha of land including 400 under wine. This diversity reflects the best of both modern and traditional winemaking. In June 2000, the Folonaris decided to officially divide their wine holdings. As a result, Ruffino is now owned by two brothers, Marco and Paolo Folonari, and their sons. Their leadership has freshly infused the Ruffino brand. Concento means harmony, which is the main characteristic of this rose salmon pink coloured wine with hints of copper. A full attractive bouquet and a firm structure on the palate mean this wine is rich and well balanced with a pleasant fruity note that is both sweet as expectrd but well balanced by the acidity that give considerable lenghth. (6 x 75 cl)

Casa Vinicola Nera SASSELLA DOCG Valtellina Lombardia
Description: Valtellina’s steep, terraced vineyards along the Adda valley are some of the most dramatic in Italy. Nebbiolo is the main grape variety, although it is known locally as Chiavennasca. In good vintages, the delicate floral aromas produced by sub-Alpine Nebbiolo are backed up by good fruit concentration. Nera are amongst the area’s most serious producers with 48ha of prime vineyards. Winemaker Stefano Nera produces the elegant wines Sassella as well as Inferno and both have real complexity and intensity. This wine is a blend of Nebbiolo and a little of the local grape varieties Pignola, Brugnola e Rossola. Red ruby in colour with a vinous bouquet, dry, warm, consistent and fine, this wine has lots of character. (12 x 75 cl)

Mount Horrocks CORDON CUT Riesling Clare Valley South Australia
Description: Cordon Cut' refers to a unique, risky process. It involves cutting the canes when the grapes are ripe, allowing the remaining fruit to concentrate and raisin naturally on the vine. This results in intense flavour and richness. Mount Horrocks Cordon Cut Riesling is bright white gold with lime-edges. Abundant distinctive riesling fruit aromas suggest a stunning wine. It's floral-scented, with candied orange and fragrant lime cordial notes. The concentrated fruit and high sugar content give a luscious, slippery mouthfeel. Remarkably fresh and lively flavours of dried apricots, lime, and honeysuckle are matched perfectly with a well-balanced, zippy acid close. (12 x 37.5 cl)

Schloss Vollrads Riesling SPATLESE Rheingau
Description: The Riesling Spätlese is clean and bright, with a hint of straw in colour. On the nose it has ample perfumes of apricots and peaches, whilst on the palate it is beautifully balanced with the ripe fruit and residual sugar in perfect equilibrium with the characteristic zingy acidity of good Riesling. It has a long and slightly spicy finish. With nearly 800 years of viticulture experience, Schloss Vollrads is one of the oldest wine estates, not only in Germany, but probably in the world. Situated in the heart of the Rheingau, the estate’s 60 hectares of vineyards are planted exclusively with Riesling. The quality of the Schloss Vollrads wines is the culmination of the work done by Rowald Hepp since 1997. They have pristine Riesling flavours, unmarred by the addition of suss-reserve, stunning perfumes, great length, balance and a weight that derives from the natural ripeness of the fruit rather than sugar. The wine is sealed with Vinolok, a glass stopper that is, according to winemaker Rowald Hepp, every bit as good as Stelvin, especially for aromatic varieties like Riesling. (12 x 75 cl)

Trinity Hill GIMBLETT GRAVELS Syrah Hawke's Bay NZ
Description: Hawkes Bay has a unique micro climate where vines reach deep into the stony, free draining soil of the old Ngaruroro riverbed, sheltered from the prevailing Westerly winds, basking in an abundance of dry, warm weather. At Trinity Hill's Gimblett Road Vineyards, the river stones gently release their heat long after the sun has set. This helps to promote perfect ripening of the grapes. Vines are planted, trained and pruned to expose as much leaf and fruit to sunlight as possible. North-South planted vine rows allow the mid day sun to warm the ground between rows, while removal of shoots and flowers early in the season reduces the crop level and opens the vine out to light and air. Using these techniques, the winegrowers at Trinity Hill grow moderate crops to consistently produce concentrated flavour and colour intensity in the finished wine. The handpicked grapes were gently destemmed and lightly crushed to leave a large portion of uncrushed berries. Fermentation took place in a closed stainless steel fermenter and the cap was pumped over twice daily with light aeration for optimum color and tannin extraction. An extended post-fermentation maceration complexes the tannins, softening and stabilising the wine. The wine was subsequently aged in a mixture of new and older French and American oak barriques. Malolactic fermentation took place in the barrel. Regular racking for clarification and controlled introduction of oxygen to the wine was introduced. The wine was blended after 14 months oak aging and bottled in late-September 2001, without fining but with light filtration. The colour is a deep, vibrant crimson. Blackberry, black pepper, savoury and spice elements are prominent. Multi-layered complexity is the aim. Powerful but ripe and round tannins give the wine great structure. Oak aging plays a minor part and the wine lives on its fruit. Combined with the good acidity, these characteristics mean excellent aging potential. Development of mineral, earthy and tarry characters likely during bottle aging, resulting in a wine that is distinctly Northern Rhone-like rather than resembling any thing Australian. (12 x 75 cl)
