At the turn of the 20th century, Oakley was home to a number of Portuguese and Italian immigrants who found many similarities to the Mediterranean climate they had left behind. They planted thousands of acres of orchards and vineyards. Today, a century later, due to the devastation of phylloxera and the encroachment of commercial and residential development, only 600 acres of vineyards remain in this evolving community. Cline Cellars owns and controls 300 of those acres including some of the oldest surviving vines in California. Cline Cellars began when Fred Cline's maternal grandfather, Valeriano Jacuzzi lived in Oakley and inspired him to go on to to U.C. Davis to study agriculture management. After attaining his degree in 1982, Fred returned to Oakley and founded Cline Cellars. There he started producing wines and restoring his grandfather’s ancient vines: today the Zinfandel, Carignane and Mourvedre produced from these vines are some of the most unique and historic wines made in California. In 1991, the winery relocated from Oakley to the Carneros region of Sonoma County. Here Fred pioneered the planting of Rhone varietals including Syrah, Viognier, Marsanne and Roussanne. From vines over 100 years old which give fruit of remarkable concentration, this is Contra Costa Mourvedre par excellence. The Ancient Vines Mourvedre, grown in the warm, sandy soils of Oakley California, produces a wine that has a distinct chocolate character. The tannins are soft and the wine has good weight in the mouth while the flavours and aromas of cherry and mint help make this delicious wine an unusual delight. (12 x 75 cl)

Andrea Franchetti LE CUPOLE di TRINORO Rosso IGT Tuscana
Description: The 2000 Cupole di Trinoro is a blend of 78% Cabernet Franc, 11% Merlot, 6% Cesanese, and 5% Troia. The yields were 15 hectoliters per hectare, and the wine spent 14 months in 100% new French oak. There are 2,300 cases of this gorgeous opaque ruby/purple-colored effort. It offers up a sweet perfume of menthol, red as well as black currants, licorice, smoke, graphite, and vanilla. Rich, intense, and medium to full-bodied, but remarkably light and delicate on its feet, this stunning Italian red should drink well young, yet last for 12-15+ years. One of the new superstar estates in Tuscany, the first vintage of proprietor Andrea Franchetti was 1997. He is obviously a perfectionist, and is doing some things that have never been done with the likes of Cabernet Franc outside Bordeaux and a handful of California wineries. All of Franchetti's wines are made from low yields, given indigenous yeast fermentations, micro-oxygenations, and no racking, fining, or filtration prior to bottling. I have been a fan since the first releases. The wines go from strength to strength, although Franchetti keeps changing some of the names as well as blends (6 x 75 cl)

Rallo VESCO Rosso Nero D'Avola Cabernet Sicilia IGT
Description: In Marsala, the westernmost promontory of Sicily, was found Cantine Rallo a successful integration between nature, technology and tradition. In 1860, at the apex of the shining age of Marsala, don Diego Rallo founded the wine-producing firm that has conserved and amplified the prestige won on the national and international markets. Cantine Rallo is a farm of about 50 hectares and once the grapes are harvested they are put into special box that preserves the quality of the grape berry and then transported to the winery. The grapes are then destalked and crushed, the result is put into a vat where it is allowed to ferment. The fermentation begin at about 27-30° C and continuous for 20 days. After that the wine require a period of maturation approximately 12 months in French oak barrique or in Slavonian oak cask. This is undertaken to enhance and respect the delicacy of the grapes while exalting their varietal strengths. Finnally the wine spends eight months in bottle before being released. This intense ruby red coloured wine with orange and garnet red nuances is a blend of 50% Nero d'Avola and 50% Cabarnet Sauvignon. The bouquet is a mixture of delicate berry fruit, black pepper and strong cherry scents with dry, harmonious but strong flavours and aristocratic aplomb. Velvety and pleasant to taste with a soft aroma of tannin and great finish this is a wine to savour. (6 x 75 cl)
