Castello Banfi COL DI SASSO Sangiovese Cabernet Sauvignon Toscana IGT
Description: In 1978 John and Harry Mariani, successful American importers, joined forces with Italy's leading enologist, Ezio Rivella; their objective was to produce top-quality wine on a scale never before attempted in Italy. Castello Banfi is a rarity among Italian wine estates, not just because of its size , its composition of single vineyards, or its state-of-the-art winery, but because it was started from scratch a little over 25 years ago. At that time the Mariani Brothers were looking for an estate where the climate and soil had to be ideal for the cultivation of many of the world's noble grape varieties, and it had to be within a region of Italy that already had a tradition of quality winemaking. The 4,500 acres that the Mariani Brothers first found were near Montalcino, and eligible for the status DOCG of Brunello di Montalcino, one of the most prestigious of all Italian wines and it met the other criteria as well. By good luck the adjacent estate, of 2,600 acres, became available shortly afterwards and in 1984 the 11th century castle was the final purchase, and the estate was renamed Castello Banfi. Today Castello Banfi is producing a wide range of wines including Brunello di Montalcino that was Italy's first wine to be accorded D.O.C.G. status, a testament to its aristocracy, balance and fabulous proclivity for ageing. Col di Sasso, which translates to 'Stony Hill' is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Sangiovese grapes cultivated on the most rocky and impervious slopes of the Banfi estate in Montalcino, Tuscany. Typically harvested in early October, each grape variety is vinified separately with the Sangiovese imparting body, while stainless steel aged Cabernet Sauvignon adds fruit and structure. Intense ruby red colour this wine has fresh aromas and flavours of cassis, plum, and cherry with hints of green bell pepper. Well structured with balanced acidity the rich juicy fruit of the Cabernet Sauvignon is well-balanced by the soft tannins and structure of the Sangiovese. (6 x 75 cl)

Spy Valley Estate Pinot Noir Marlborough NZ
Description: Tasting Note A lively mixture of black currants, cherries and spice on the nose. Juicy, ripe tannins and fresh acidity frame the fruit on the palate with the oak adding some richer, seductive chocolate notes in the finish. 13.5% Spy Valley Pinot Noir is unquestionably one of the best pound for pound wines in New Zealand. Whilst many wineries have jumped on the Pinot Noir bandwagon by pricing their wines in line with Premier Cru Burgundies, Spy Valley have just concentrated on making amazing wine at a realistic price. A bit about Spy Valley Named after the satellite listening post located over the road from the winery, Spy Valley is in the Waihopai Valley in Marlborough. Happily for us they appear more interested in fine wine than exploding cigars, and recent vintages have seen the winery’s trophy cabinet filled to bursting. Like most Marlborough wineries, Pinot Noir and Sauvignon Blanc are Spy Valley specialties but winemaker Ant Mackenzie and his team also make a great range of aromatic whites including Riesling, Gewurztraminer and Pinot Gris. Their quality was recognised in March 2007 when the winery became the first ever producer to win four trophies in the same year at the Sydney Wine Show. (6 x 75 cl)

Chateau Fleur de Rol Grand Cru St Emilion
Description: Fleur de Rol employs the ubiquitous Michel Rolland as a consultant. The grapes are harvested by hand and after destemming, the wine is vinified traditionally in cement-epoxy vats with frequent temperature controls. The wine is then aged for 12 to 18 months in high quality oak barrels of which one third are new. This is a blend of 70% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Cabernet Franc producing lots of charred, smoky oak on the big, bold and ambitious nose with bags of tar and black fruit. The skin extract is very evident and there is plenty of toasty vanilla flavours from the oak with dark fruit and tar again on the palate. While there is a grippy, confident finish. (12 x 75 cl)

Domaine Cuilleron LA PETITE COTE Condrieu
Description: It has taken Yves Cuilleron 10 years to establish himself as one of the most dynamic young winegrowers in the Northern Rhone. His bold wines move and impress aficionados by their deep combination of terroir and style, a style which combines concentration and elegance, the two words which best define a great wine. The Condrieu appellation is only 100 hectares in total of which Yves owns 8. This makes him a major player in an appellation which has 40 vineyard owners and in which only 20 producers make their own wine. At the turn of the century a handful of vines growers entirely renovated this vineyard. The wines produced from the viognier grape variety, are exclusively white and are renowned for their bouquet of violets and apricots. As with all Cuillerons Condrieus the grapes for La Petite Cote are all harvested by hand and fermented in oak for 10 months. This wine is elaborated with a lot of fruity characters and freshness. Pineapple and hay aromas abound while there is some floral and herbaceous nuances. Juicy, light and fresh this is a wine of modest size and depth, but one with good mineral spine and liveliness. (6 x 75 cl)
