David Franz OLD REDEMPTION Barossa Valley South Australia
Description: The old Redemption's pedigree is truly great, in 1947 the blend was begun and when David Franz father Peter Lehmann joined Saltrams in 1959, he nurtured and added to the reserves with additions of Shiraz, Dolcetto and Tokay. These stocks then formed the base for the awesome old Tawnys, Alameda Show and Mr Pickwick. When Peter Lehmann left Saltram in 1979 he owned a significant portion of these old Tawny Stocks. In the 1980's he created a new blend, the Old Redemption from these amazing old reserves. The mid 80's, 90's and 2000's saw a decline in the interest in fortifieds so he tucked away the Old Redemption in its barrels for another day. Today fortified wines have started to gain appreciation and recognition and they are again available with a little more maturity, character and sophistication. A deep burnt umber coloured wine with golden edges, great clarity and brightness. The huge upfront nose is lifted with grapy brandy spirit showing golden toffee, complex old oak overlaying smoky hints. The palate has a silky rich mouth feel that develops into a fiery delight of hot chilli like pepper fire and cleansing spirit, while sweet oak abounds. The concentrated raisin sweetness fills and caresses the mouth before opening lotus like to layer upon layer of spicy complexity finishing with cigar box memories. Available in 50 cl Bottles. Domaine de la Vougeraie CLOS DU PRIEURE Blanc Vougeot
Description: For the first 680 years of this vineyard's history, it was tended by the monks of Citeaux, who planted the Clos de Vougeot and the majority of the neighbouring plots at the start of the 12th century. The Clos du Prieure, like the rest, was sold off at the end of the 18th century under the French Revolution. Located in the climate known as Le Village, it is separated from the neighbouring vines by a small track to the west and a stream to the East, the Vouge, which gave its name to the village and to this Domaine. Vougeot is located in the Cote de Nuits, between Chambolle-Musigny and Vosne-Romanee, some twenty kilometres to the south of Dijon. The Clos du Prieure name recalls the Priory, which used to own this land. The enclosure wall stands to this day, a rare occurrence in Burgundy. The Domaine began converting to organic agriculture in 1994, using pest management techniques instead of pest control for the first time. All the vineyards now use organic methods, chosen solely because they respect the environment. After whole bunch pressing the wine is fermented in barrels, although no yeast or enzyme are added. The wine is then aged atleast 11 months in the barrel, with 30% new Oak, and stirred on lees once a week. Mineral hints on the nose through to a clean attack on the palate, showing citrus fruit flavours with a lovely freshness on the finish.

Esk Valley BLACK LABEL Verdelho Hawke's Bay NZ
Description: VINEYARDS Verdelho is a Portuguese variety originating from the island of Madeira, where it has long been used to make a white fortified wine. Recently it has become increasingly popular in Australia where it has been made as a crisp dry white. It is this example we have followed. Our Verdelho vines are planted in our Omahu Gravels vineyard in Hawke's Bay Gimblett Gravels Winegrowing District. The vines have struggled in these poor soils and yield a small crop of early ripening and intensely flavoured grapes. WINEMAKING The fruit was hand harvested and whole bunch pressed, to tank and old barrels for fermentation. A selected aromatic yeast strain was used for the tank fermented portion and indigenous yeast used for the barrel ferments. The individual parcels were fermented dry and then blended and bottled early to capture the vibrant fruit flavours. WINEMAKER'S COMMENTS This is a highly aromatic wine, exhibiting aromas and flavours of stonefruit, passionfruit and citrus notes. It is a dry style with a good mouthfeel and body and a clean crisp finish. Enjoy as an aperitif or with seafood. (6 x 75 cl)
