It has taken Yves Cuilleron 10 years to establish himself as one of the most dynamic young winegrowers in the Northern Rhone. His bold wines move and impress aficionados by their deep combination of terroir and style, a style which combines concentration and elegance, the two words which best define a great wine. This wine is made with Syrah grapes and the old vines used are between 20 and 40 years old. The grapes come from a selection of the best vines on terraces and hillsides where the soils are sandy granite and not very deep, while neither insecticides nor acaricides are used. After the manual harvest the grapes are picked out, crushed and partially picked off from the bunch. Next, the wine is put into oak barrels and malolactic fermantation occurs and finally the wine is aged in oak for 18 months. Dark ruby coloured wine with an intensely perfumed nose of redcurrant, licorice, and fresh violet. Serious, concentrated and deep, with strong, inky berry and cherry flavours that build and expand on the palate combine well with powerful tannins and strong finish. (12 x 75 cl)

Description: Founded in 1972, Joseph Phelps Vineyards is an independent, estate-based winery located outside of St. Helena. Perched on a knoll in bucolic Spring Valley, the graceful redwood winery overlooks vineyard-studded hills, the town of St. Helena and the Mayacamas Mountains to the west. Long known for his innovative spirit and passion for quality, Joe Phelps pioneered a number of 'firsts' in the early years of the winery. The 1974 Insignia — released in the spring of 1978 — was the first Bordeaux-style blend produced in California under a proprietary label. The release of the 1974 Syrah in 1977 sparked industry-wide interest in a remarkable French varietal whose plantings in California had disappeared and been virtually forgotten for over half a century. And in 1990, after years of research, a whole new family of Rhône-style wines was introduced which today includes Syrah, Viognier and a Chateauneuf-du-Pape style blend called Le Mistral. 100% estate-grown Sauvignon Blanc from the Spring Valley ranch outside of St. Helena, the grapes were harvested at an average 23.0º Brix, fermented sur lees for six months in a combination of new French oak barrels and 3-4 year old French oak , then blended and bottled before release. Gentle fruit and fragrant are the hallmarks of this Sauvignon Blanc. Californian ripeness makes for richness of flavour rather than startling fruit acidity to deliver a refreshing rather than reminiscent wine showing crushed gooseberries and grass. Beautifully balanced fruit flavours with notes of mineral lead to a fresh, mediumbodied finish. (12 x 75 cl)

Description: TASTING NOTE: A fine ruby-red in colour, with a nose of ripe red fruits and hints of vanilla which marry well together. The wine is medium-bodied and is a perfect blend of the ripe, spicy-juiciness of the Merlot grape supported by the firmness and finesse of the Cabernet Franc. LOCATION: Owned by the Vauthier family since the late 16th Century, Chateau Lucas is situated in the Saint Emilion satellite of Lussac, approximately 45 kilometers east of Bordeaux. The family also own Chateau Ausone 1er Grand Cru Classé St Emilion. SOIL: Like the rest of the St Emilion District the soil make-up is complex. To the west of the commune the soil is gravelly. To the north it is cold and clayey, while in the south-east the soil is essentially clay limestone. Grapes are selected from across the commune and the percentage split varies from vintage to vintage. CLIMATE: Compared to other parts of Bordeaux, the climate here is more continental, with a greater variation in daily temperatures. There is substantially less rain during summer and winter.
