Althaus DOMAINE A
Description: Peter and Ruth Althaus' 20ha property in the Coal River Valley in Southern Tasmania is truly remarkable in that the Cabernet, Pinot Noir and Sauvignon Blanc that it produces is not just high quality but is truly of world class. Here they are producing not only the 'Stoney Vineyard' but the 'Domaine A' range of wines. Peter Althaus was formerly a business man with IBM, working in Geneva. Having developed a palate for fine European wine and a curiosity for how he could set about making it, the Althaus' set about finding a vineyard site with potential to make outstanding wines. Virtually all of the European sites had already been identified so the search was extended to the Southern hemisphere. Peter long favoured the Central Otago region of New Zealand but eventually settled on the tiny 1 hectare property that today forms Domaine A. Since 1989, when they took over the Domaine, planting has increased to 20 hectares and includes Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Pinot Noir, Petit Verdot and Sauvignon Blanc. Vines are densely planted and the sloping North/North East aspect coupled with a temperate maritime climate ensures that the grapes have a long, cool growing season (12 x 75 cl)

Sherwood Estate CLEARWATER VINEYARDS Pinot Noir Waipara NZ
Description: Sherwood Estate is very much a family business, with Dayne and Jill Sherwood owning and operating it since the late 1980's. The winery is located in the picturesque Waipara Valley, while they have four vineyards also owned by Sherwood Estate in the famed Marlborough Region, at the top of the South Island. Based on nearly twenty years of growing grapes and making wine, Sherwood Estate now specialise in Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Riesling. Sherwood Estate produce three ranges of wines the Clearwater Range, the Sherwood Estate Range and the the Stratum Range. The Clearwater range represents the very best varietal single vineyard wines from Sherwood Estate's own vineyards in Waipara. This is very much a hand crafted range both in the vineyards and winery, here meticulous care is taken to ensure that the wine produced is of the highest quality and reflects each vineyard's unique characteristics or 'terroir'. The Pinot Noir grapes were selected from three of Sherwood Estates vineyard sites in Waiparaand where the fruit was hand harvested before going into the winery. After crushing and destemming, the fruit was transferred to four tonne open top fermenters, for a 7 day pre-fermentation cool soak. Yeast was then added to initiate the start of fermentation. Over the course of the fermentation the tanks were hand plunged 3 times daily. Following 15-19 days of skin contact the fruit was pressed and aged for 12 months in French oak barriques. This Clearwater Vineyard Pinot Noir is made in a traditionally Burgundian manner and captures the true essence of the variety. The nose displays rich, red berry fruit and plum aromas integrated with careful oak handling. The palate is round and full with lovely texture and length. (12 x 75 cl)

Two Hands BRILLIANT DISGUISE Moscato Frizzante Barossa Valley
Description: The 'two hands' are Michael Twelftree and Richard Mintz who formed the company in 1999 with the clear objective of making the best possible Shiraz based wines from prized Shiraz producing regions within Australia. Michael Twelftree, initially from a construction background, spent a number of years exporting Australian Wine to the USA and Asia. Richard Mintz a chartered accountant, was formerly C.E.O. of one of Australia's leading Cooperage's in the Barossa Valley, South Australia. With Twelftree's contacts and wine savvy approach and Mintz's management skills and business acumen, the two old friends decided to make some wine together. In 2000 they started with just 17 tonnes of fruit from the McLaren Vale and Padthaway wine regions. From the beginning the wines were very well received at home and abroad with a healthy stream of reviews culminating in 2004 with Robert M. Parker pronouncing Two Hands as 'the finest negociant operation south of the equator'. This wine is made from 100% Muscat Blanc or as it is known locally White Frontignac, and is sourced from 80 and 100 year old vines which has given the wine greater depth. Pale straw colour with delicious aromas of guava and an aromatic grapey musk perfume, give way to a light bodied delicate palate. Also evident is a gentle sweetness balanced by refreshing acidity, exotic fruit flavours and a lively spritz. (12 x 50 cl)

Description: Suckfizzle is a small vineyard located at the south-westerly extreme of the Margaret River grape growing region and since the first release in 1997 the Suckfizzle wines have developed a cult following. Here the converging power of the Southern and Indian oceans, provide a cool maritime climate characterised by drenching winter rains and long dry summers cooled by omnipresent sea breezes. In the north-east facing shelter of the Leeuwin Naturaliste Ridge and the Blackwood River, nature provided a unique viticultural mesoclimate for the Suckfizzle wines. Only two wines are made in the small vineyard. The white is a blend of Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon, the percentages a reflection of seasonal fortune. Bodegas Pinord CLOS de TORRIBAS Crianza Penedes
Description: The history of Bodegas Pinord can be traced back to the time when, over one hundred and fifty years ago, the Tetas family began making white and red wines on their estate in Sant Cugat Sesgarrigues from grapes they themselves had grown. Even at that time they produced and aged the wines using the most traditional methods employed in the region. In 1942, Jose Maria Tetas set up the current winery in Vilafranca del Penedès, just four kilometres from the original estate. Having inherited the family methods and traditions, it has gradually grown until it has now become one of the most highly reputed wineries in the region. Tempranillo 90%, Cabernet 10% has produced a plum red coloured wine with dark ruby overtones. An intense aroma harking back to the aging in the barrel and the smell of ripe fruit, recalling the Mediterranean grapes from which the wine is made. Light on the palate yet not lacking in body.
