Rust en Vrede ESTATE WINE Stellenbosch RSA
Description: Only specialising in the production of red wine, Rust en Vrede has established itself as one of South Africa's premium red wine estates. Full-bodied and complex, Rust en Vrede's wines reflect the uniqueness of the Stellenbosch terroir and is proud to be part of a remarkable three hundred year old wine tradition. Rust en Vrede is vineyards are located in ideal terroir high up on the Helderberg Mountain which is vital to imparting deep warm flavours to the wines. North facing and slightly warmer than most vineyards, its close proximity to the Atlantic Ocean keeps the temperatures low and extends the ripening period of the grapes. Following berry-selection, the Cabernet Sauvignon , Shiraz and Merlot clones are separately vinified. Left to mature in French and American oak barrels for 18 months, the wines are blended and bottled. After a further 18 months of bottle-maturation the Rust en Vrede wines are released. This is an inky black coloured blend of 58% Cabernet Sauvignon, 33% Shiraz and 9% Merlot. The Floral bouquet is also showing cassis, plums, prunes and black berries while there is a Chocolate mocha flavour undertone. Huge structure and generous ripe fruit flavours complement the good acidity / fruit / wood balance while the mouth coating silky tannins culminate in a long lingering aftertaste. (6 x 75 cl)

Description: Specialising in the production of red wine only, Rust en Vrede has established itself as one of South Africa's premium red wine estates. Rust en Vrede is proud to be part of a remarkable three hundred year old wine tradition and continues to pursue the excellence synonymous with wines produced by Stellenbosch's private estates. Protected terroir high up on the Helderberg Mountain is vital to imparting deep warm flavours to the wines. North facing and slightly warmer, the vineyard's close proximity to the Atlantic Ocean is what keep the temperatures low and extend the ripening period of the grapes. Harvested at 24ºc, the Shiraz ferments in open tank fermentors and pumped over five times per day. Each Shiraz clone sees a unique treatment of yeast and wood. Matured fifty percent in new American oak and the rest in second fill oak for 18 months, the wine receives bottle-maturation for a further twenty months before release. A Deep mulberry red coloured wine with aromas of dark plum, cherry, leather and smoked bacon are infused with subtle oak. The incredible fusion of pepper, spice, cherry on the palate with floral and Eucalyptus notes has produced a wine with a long, clean elegant finish. (6 x 75 cl)

The Brampton name comes from Brampton Beacon Bloomer, the Jersey Bull, whose porgeny form part of the famous Jersey herd that roam the Rustenberg estate. During the last few years Rustenberg have transformed themselves from a distinguished producer on the local scene to a new era South African standard setter on the international stage. Continual vineyard improvements, a new winery, tasting and storage facility and one of the Cape's hottest young winemakers in Adi Badenhorst, are all driven by owner Simon Barlow's vision of 'absolute passion and total dedication to quality in both the vineyard and cellar'. This wine is a blend of 46% Cabernet Sauvignon, 45% Merlot with a little 9% Shiraz. Here, all the batches of grapes were hand-picked and vinified separately in stainless steel tanks. After primary fermentation batches were transferred to small French oak for Malolactic fermentation. Regular rackings were carried out during the first year of maturation. Batches were blended for the final phase of maturation, using small French & American oak barrels. Upfront spice of cloves and nutmeg are complemented by ripe, red fruit aromatics where raspberries and strawberries dominate. The palate is well constructed in this medium bodied wine as the aromas follow through and integrate beautifully with subtle, dark chocolate and oak spice flavours. Available in Magnum bottles.

Handpicked and chilled overnight once the grapes arrive in the winery, the fruit is then crushed, destemmed and pressed to tank, while some batches submitted to skin contact for 6-8 hours. Cool Fermentation is undertaken for 3-4 weeks in stainless steel tanks, to retain prodigious fruit character, the wine is then blended and stabilised before bottling. A zesty upfront wine in true New World style. Passionfruit, Gooseberry, Litchi and Asparagus aromas follow through to a full, lively palate. The fleshy well-rounded mouthfeel derives from grapes harvested at optimum ripeness. (6 x 75 cl)

A belnd of 97% Shiraz and a littl Viognier was crushed together. An array of small batches were fermented and treated separately, including some batches that were aged on Viognier lees. In total 14 Different parcels were blended and after 9 months the difference in treatments and careful blending make this a very interesting and complex wine. The rich, savoury character of Shiraz is enhanced by Viognier, adding an aromatic dimension to the wine. Earth, pepper-spice and hints of dark chocolate support the richness of ripe fruit, due to accessible tannin structure. (12 x 75 cl)

Continual vineyard improvements, a new winery, tasting and storage facility and one of the Cape's hottest young winemakers in Adi Badenhorst, are all driven by owner Simon Barlow's vision of 'absolute passion and total dedication to quality in both the vineyard and cellar'. Small parcels of judiciously selected fruit was harvested by hand, chilled and then pressed to barrel for natural, primary fermentation which was complete after 5-6 weeks. This wine was then returned to barrel for a maturation period of 6 months in oak. Racking, protein- and cold-stabilization took place after which the wine was bottled. The aromatics are splendid showing springtime perfumery, fresh ginger, peaches & apricots, buchu and honeysuckle. The palate is waxy and delicate yet with an underlying strength and focus. Rustenberg Chardonnay Stellenbosch RSA
Description: Rustenberg has a wine-growing history dating back to 1682, when Roelof Pasman from Meurs, near the Rhine, recognised its wine-growing potential. By 1781 some 3000 cases of wine were produced on the farm. Production doubled by the end of the century and a new cellar was built. Wine has been bottled at this cellar ever since in an unbroken period dating back to 1892. Earlier in its history Rustenberg was split in two, the additional vineyard being named Schoongezicht. Rustenberg was its peak around 1812, with beautiful homesteads and flourishing vineyards, but by mid-century, recession coupled with disease in the vines, brought bankruptcy and dispossession. Schoongezicht was rescued in 1892 by John X Merriman , and Rustenberg by his brother-in-law Sir Jacob Barry. Together they revitalised the farms, fruit was sent to Covent Garden; new vines were grafted onto disease-resistant American rootstock; while wines were exported to England and the Continent. In 1941 Peter and Pamela Barlow bought Rustenberg, later acquiring Schoongezicht and reuniting the properties. Their son Simon took over the running of the farm in 1987, while the Barlows have been at Rustenberg for over 60 years, it is the longest period any one family has owned the farm. A lengthy barrel maturation on gross lees in conjunction with natural fermentation has allowed the wood and fruit to 'marry' well. The results are a complex array of flavours and aromas which are continuously changing as the wine spends more time in bottle. The nose shows nuttiness and marzipan with underlying citrus and hints of white peach aromatics. A firm palate gives backbone to concentrated fruit and the richness of the wine. This wine will develop in bottle, leading to new nuances and flavours and continual drinking pleasure for years to come. (6 x 75 cl)

Just over l00 ha are planted to mainly red wines on the rich red granitic southern slopes of the Simonsberg mountains as well as the cooler climate Nooitgedacht vineyards on the Helderberg, principally planted to Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc. While the Rustenberg Peter Barlow single vineyard Cabernet recently won rave ratings from Robert Parker as '...may be the finest red wine I have tried from South Africa', it is the Rustenberg Cabernet Sauvignon/Merlot/Cabernet Franc 'John X Merriman' that is perhaps the wine that most epitomises the estate's red prowess and international aspirations (6 x 75 cl)

Malolactic fermentation and maturation in French barriques followed and the wine was bottled 20 months later using 225L 50% new French oak barrels. Well rounded wine which will increase in complexity and character with bottle age as is customary of Rustenberg's red wines. Simonsig Cabernet Sauvignon Stellenbosch RSA
Description: Simonsig has been producing Cabernet Sauvignon since 1976 and achieved early success when the 1997 vintage won the General Smuts Trophy after being judged as the Champion Wine of South Africa. Since these days we planted a lot more Cabernet especially on deep decomposed granite and shale soils that are well known for bearing low yield, high quality grapes. A deep purple red colour with brick edges. The intense nose of red berries, blackcurrant and carnations, enhanced by subtle wood flavours gives the wine great complexity. Description: 8 months in French Oak barriques. 40% new oak. 25% Malolactic fermentation. Simonsig Chardonnay was one of the first Chardonnays produced in South Africa. This year the 1997 won a Gold Medal at the London International Wine Challenge and the 1998 a Bronze Medal at the Chardonnay du Monde in France. At a recent tasting of the Wine of the Month Club the 1998 came in the Top 6 out of the 71 Chardonnays tasted.
