The Bergsig Estate has been in the Lategan family since 1843. De Wet Lategan is the sixth generation winemaker and has obtained a BSc degrees in Oenology at the University of Stellenbosch, before joining the family firm in 1990. His brothers Louis and Plum manage the vineyards. Their father Prop Lategan is still very active in the general management and promotion of the wines from his beautiful 400 Ha farm in the foothills of Bainskloof Mountain. Bergsig Estate lies at the narrow funnel-like entrance to the Breede River Valley. The regular afternoon South-easterly breezes have a moderating effect on the summer heat and ensures cool picking temperatures throughout the day. The Bergsig Estate was the first winery outside the coastal region to earn a superior award for red wine. More specifically the 1978 Cabernet Sauvignon. This encouraged Prop Lategan to plant more red varieties and today 20% of all plantings are Cabernet Sauvignon , Merlot, Pinotage, Ruby Cabernet and Tinta Barocca. On the white side Chenin Blanc, Sauvignon Blanc and now the very popular Gewurztraminer predominate. The modern cellar handles 4000 tons per harvest and boasts a separate wood maturation cellar. Rijks Private Cellar Chardonnay Tulbagh RSA
Description: Chardonnay displaying an attractive straw colour. The nose explodes with a variety of naartjie, peach and peardrop aromas, carrying through on a creamy, full bodied palate with a firm acid and long vanilla aftertaste. The fruit was night harvested and hand picked to retain the Chardonnay character. Once in the winery 20% of the wine was fermented with wild yeast and was 100% barrel fermented and matured 11 months in french oak. 70% new and 30% 2nd fill french barrels. After working in Cape Town for 20 years, Neville Dorrington and his family decided it was time to move to the country. Lovers of good food and collectors of good wines, the search for a wine farm began. Months and miles later, it was decided to buy an undeveloped farm. They fell in love with the Tulbagh valley and the splendour and scenic beauty of the Tulbagh valley is hard to beat. One hour from Cape Town Tulbagh is part of a little valley that lies in a fertile basin almost completely surrounded by the majestic Winterhoek and Witzenberg mountains, often snow-capped in winter. Here the Klein Berg River snakes its way across the valley floor, providing ample water for irrigation. The town was named after Rijk Tulbagh, governor of the Cape from 1751 to 1771. Steeped in history, the beautiful Church Street has 32 National Monuments, more than any other street in South Africa. In honour of Rijk Tulbagh, it was decided by Neville Dorrington to name the farm Rijk's Private Cellar. The farm was found with 136 hectares of virgin soils that had not ever been cultivated before. The slopes facing north, south, east and west also has exellent drainage and sufficient water. Soil tests were done and it was perfect for low yielding high quality grapes. The offer to purchase was accepted and then the Challenge began. (12 x 75 cl)
