Intense and seductive from the outset spice, black fruit, cedar and tobacco on the nose, gaining in intensity and developing dark, earthy complexity on the palate. 100% Malbec. Fermentation took place in a small tank. Pressed and racked into French oak barrels, 100% new, where it was aged for 14 months. The vineyards are between 2400 and 3600 feet above sea level, in the Mendoza province.Winemaker Roberto Cipresso makes two wines here, Altamira and Quimera. Selection and growth restriction are paramount. It takes two vines to produce just one bottle of Quimera and a staggering three for Altamira. (12 x 75 cl)

Achaval Ferrer QUIMERA Mendoza Argentina
Description: This tiny producer has 12 acres of ancient, ungrafted, picturesque, low-yield vineyards in three diverse, but neighbouring regions, growing Cabernet Sauvignon in Medrano, Merlot in Tupungato, and Malbec in La Consulta. From the outset, there was a very specific vision at this pocket-sized establishment: the typical yields are around 1 kilo per plant, and the aim is to produce spectacular quality in bite-sized amounts. A blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec and Merlot and the blend occurs before racking into barrels, of which 40% are new . The 2001 vintage Quimera is a very deep cherry red colour with aromas of plum, blackberry and chocolate with hints of wet earth and peat. The concentrated but very balanced palate has velvety smooth tannins and a long, velvety and mineral finish. (6 x 75 cl)

Bodega Caro AMANCAYA Mendoza Argentina
Description: Owner of Chateau Lafite Rothschild for five generations, the Rothschild family has been based in this Bordeaux vineyard since 1868. High values and the respect of traditional methods make them passionate about harmony and excellence. Their wines bear witness to that passion year after year and their skills have patiently enriched the wines through the generations, with world-renowned success. Over the years, Domain Baron de Rothschild has expanded its offerings through the acquisition of several french Chateau's as well as ventures in Portugal. However, in 1998 the Caro Project, based in Mendoza, Argentina was started. The idea was raised about forming a partnership between Domaines Barons de Rothschild and the Catena family. Initial enthusiasm was rapidly transformed into a project to produce a single wine combining French and Argentinean cultures. Amancaya, like its sister wine Caro, has been the latest development and presents a harmonious balance between the Argentinean and Bordeaux styles. A more fruity style wine coming from the higher percentage of Malbec has produced an intense purple-red colour with aromas of ripe red cherries and wild strawberries, underpinned by notes of smoky vanilla from the oak. On the palate it has good concentration but is both fresh and full. Balanced and very attractive with tannins of great quality this is a wine to enjoy to the long finish. The word Amancaya is the native indian name of a flower of the Andes that you can find in the Mendoza area. (12 x 75 cl)

A foward fruity style coming from the higher percentage of Malbec demonstrates both the new and old world heritage at the core of this wines roots. A lovely dark red coloured wine it is showing a fruity nose primarily of red fruit with vanilla as well as spice notes. Nice concentration, this wine is fleshy while the wood is well blended with the fruit, the gentle tannins and nice length complement each other. (12 x 75 cl)

Bodega Catena Zapata ALAMOS Bonarda Mendoza Argentina
Description: In the glass Intensely aromatic with ripe raspberries alongside floral and liquorice notes. The palate is full, soft and chock full of red berry fruit spiced up by touches of anis, vanilla, and toast from light oak aging. The finish shows soft, sweet tannins and fresh, lively acidity. 13.6% Bonarda is an old Italian grape with its family home in Piedmont, which like so many of its compatriots upped sticks in the early twentieth century and headed for the New World. One of the most planted grapes in its adopted home, it seems to thrive in the pale blue and white stripes of Argentina, producing ripe, characterful wines that seem to keep a subtle suggestion of an Italian accent. A bit about Alamos The Alamos wines are made high up in the Andes by the team at Catena Zapata. Nicolas Catena was the third generation of his family to make wine in Mendoza but the first to see the potential in planting higher and higher vineyards in search of cool climate sites ideal for the production of fine wine. Today, he works with his daughter Laura in their relentless pursuit of the finest possible quality wines from their unique vineyards. (12 x 75 cl)
