Domaine De L'Hortus BERGERIE DE L'HORTUS Rouge Pic St Loup Coteaux du Languedoc
Description: Jean Orliac is one of the top producers in Pic Saint Loup and his wines are to be found in many of the top French restaurants. Domaine de l'Hortus is one of the standard bearers in AOC Pic St Loup. In 1979 Jean and Marie-Thérèse Orliac planted some abandoned land at the foot of two dramatic cliffs, the Pic St Loup and the Montagne de l'Hortus. They also built a distinctive winery, constructed mostly of wood. Today, they now have 55 hectares of vines, split over two sites, with 43 ha red grapes and 12 ha white. The main vineyard area is near the winery, where Mourvedre grows on the hot scree slope under the Montagne de l'Hortus, whereas Grenache and Syrah are grown on a northeast-facing slope under the Pic St Loup, with a cooler microclimate. The second vineyard area is situated some 25 km away, at Clos St Jean. Two thirds aged in new oak, one third in second-use barrels. Ripe, herby spicy berry fruit on the nose, with lovely savoury, meaty edge. There's a pretty floral character to the nose. (6 x 75 cl)

Domaine De Montcalmes Rouge Coteaux Du Languedoc
Description: This is yet another domaine on the famous plateau near Aniane, with varying soil types, including friable limestone, and even the classic galets roules of Chateauneuf fame. Fredéric Pourtalie, started his career as a stagiaire with the illustrious Laurent Vaille of Domaine de la Grange des Peres. He had inherited 25 hectares from his father, who sold his grapes through the co-operative, and after reflection and some re-planting, he produced a minuscule amount of wine in 1999, 2000 and 2001. From the 2002 vintage he vinified grapes from eight hectares, and he is aiming eventually to have a domaine of between 15 and 18 hectares. The wine is made from between 65% and 70% Syrah as well as a little Grenache and Mourvedre. The parcelles and varietals are vinified separately, and the wine undergoes 24 months elevage in barrique, with the Grenache being transferred back to stainless steel after the first 12 months. (6 x 75 cl)

Domaine des Jougla CUVEE INITIALE St-Chinian Languedoc
Description: Alain Jougla, whose family can be traced back as owning the property since 1595, must be one of southern FranceÕs superstars. The property lies between 95 and 107 metres above sea level in a hot dry Mediterranean climate, 2/3 of the vines situated on foliated shale rock and the remainder on alluvial clay soil. The vineyard is planted mainly with Grenache, Mourvedre and Syrah, with some Carignan and Cinsault. The cellar is modern and immaculate. M. Jougla uses a pneumatic press and then ferments his wines at a temperature of 28C, the cuvaison lasting between 15 and 20 days, using a combination of both cement and stainless steel tanks.
