The original Super-Tuscan, Tignanello is produced exclusively from the Tignanello vineyard, a 47 hectares southwest-facing, calcareous rocky-marl and limestone soil plot with tufaceous elements, planted between 1,150 and 1,312 feet above sea level at Antinori's Santa Cristina Estate. It was the first Sangiovese to be aged in small oak barrels, the first red wine in modern times to use a non-traditional grape variety, Cabernet, in the blend, and among the first red wines made in Chianti with no white grapes. In all three instances, it set the example for a new breed of exceptional top-of-the-line Italian wine. The Sangiovese and the Cabernet grapes were vinified separately. The Sangiovese grapes were very rich in tannins and the maceration was carried out with very gentle techniques in order to avoid astringency and at the same time to protract the duration of the contact between skins and must to increase the structure. The Cabernet grapes, well balanced in terms of tannin and colour, allowed the use of techniques of maceration more resolute, even still gentle, to assure the same results in balance and structure. The alcoholic fermentation, for the two varieties, was carried out at a temperature never exceeding 30°C in the traditional wooden fermentors. The malolactic fermentation was terminated by the year's end in new oak barrels, still maintaining the two varieties separated. The wines were then blended at the beginning of the new year and returned immediately to one year old barriques. During the ageing in barriques, that lasted about 14 months, the wine was racked depending on its need. After this time it was bottled and aged for a further 12 months at controlled temperature. Single-vineyard, estate-wine it is a blend of 85% Sangiovese, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Cabernet Franc. Intensely fruity and complex on the nose with hints of wood. This wine is full-bodied, rich and complex in the mouth with exceptional structure a and a lengthy finish. Limited Availability

Antinori VIN SANTO TENUTE MARCHESE
Description: Taste: Amber in color with a honeysuckle nose and a full, rich combination of flavors. Sweet and complex, this wine is perfect with twice-baked biscotti such as cantuccini di Prato. Vinification: The grapes, which are exclusively from the three Antinori estates in Chianti Classico, are carefully selected and picked at various times during the harvest. Those picked during the earlier part of the harvest have higher acidity, while those picked later have a higher sugar content, ensuring a correct balance between sugar and acidity at the end of vinification.Once picked, the grapes are spread by hand on special straw mats in the appassitoio, a large, airy loft situated on the estate of Tignanello, and left to dry until the end of December, when they are pressed. The must is then transferred into traditional small, 50-200 liter oak casks known as caratelli, where a long, slow alcoholic fermentation takes place, which is interrupted when the wine reaches at 15/16 %vol. The wine then ages in the caratelli for about 3 years, undergoes a very light filtration, and is bottled. Alcohol: 16% vol.

Avignonesi 50 & 50 Toscana IGT
Description: Even more sought after than Desiderio and the Grandi Annate Avignonesi' 50 & 50 is an oustanding and iconoclastic. This wine, as important and special as it is rare being a collaboration between Merlot and Sangiovese . Once in the winery this wine spend 18 months in barriques and a further 18 months in bottle. Ruby red in colour, this wine shows great balance as the the Merlot softens this well made red, while the Sangiovese provides structure and body. Intense and long finish complement the ripe fruit flavours of this very well made wine. Avignonesi is one of the great names of Italian wine. Ettore and Alberto Falvo have, over the past 30 years, taken a small estate and built it into a paradigmatic producer that has put Montepulciano on the map. The modernisation that took place at Avignonesi in the 1970s and early 1980s abated somewhat towards the end of the latter decade, but new energy has once again been injected into the business by the next generation of Falvos. Avignonesi has four estates, two in Montepulciano and two in the DOC zone of Cortona, situated to the east of Montepulciano in the foothills of the Apennines. These estates have about 115 hectares of vineyard and have been the area of greatest focus for Avignonesi over the past decade. Ettore Falvo has translated his passion for alberello training into the new vineyards planted on their estates. New Sangiovese vineyards are planted at a density of 7500 vines per hectare and the modified alberello they are using ensures earlier ripening, which has given fuller, riper wines than Montepulciano was previously capable of producing. (6 x 75 cl)
