Name: Petra ZINGARI Toscano IGT
Where it's from:  Italy, Tuscany
Price per case: £107.87
Style: Soft & Supple Reds
Description: Petra is located in the hills of Maremma in Tuscany and the 300 acre estate is controlled by the father and daughter team of Vittorio and Francesca Moretti. A Pleasant, fresh wine, ready to drink, it is the result of an experimental approach to the vineyard and to winemaking. The grapes used for Zingari wine come from vines at the foot of hills, where the soil is mainly clayey and sandy. The grapes, which are hand-picked in the second half of August, are put through a short maceration of 7-10 days maximum. Fermentation and ageing take place in stainless steel tanks, and this is also where the complete malolactic fermentation takes place. Experimental vinification techniques have been used, such as using a French-designed experimental micro-oxygenation system. A ruby red coloured blend of Merlot, Sangiovese, Syrah and petit Verdot. This wine immediately opens up with floral and fruity notes on the nose that blend together over a pleasant vegetal background. A fragrant and clean taste of cherry, marasca and notes of dog rose are evident in this well balanced wine with an ebjoyable finish. The Zingari label comes from a pictorial interpretation of the spiral theme; its geometric structure, common in the plant kingdom, recalls the evolution of a force. It represents the repeated rhythms of life, the cyclic nature of evolution, a symbol of the earth's fecundity and fertility.

Poggio al Tesoro W Cabernet Franc Tuscany IGT
Description: This is one of the most exciting estates to have emerged from Italy in recent years. Its pedigree is faultless: the Allegrini family from Verona teamed up with their U.S. importer, Leonardo Lo Cascio and bought land in Bolgheri, where they now have 30 hectares of vineyard planted.T hey hired consultant Alberto Antonini to advise them on viticulture and winemaking. 'W' was named after Walter Allegrini, brother of Franco and Marilisa Allegrini and this 100% Cabernet Franc is produced from just two rows of vines covering 0.5 hectares in the Via Bolgherese vineyard. The vineyard faces west-southwest, with coarse red sand, stones and clay soil and is situated at just 50m above sea level. After de-stemming and soft pressing with partial rupture of the berries, fermentation took place in temperature controlled stainless steel tanks at 30°C. Alberto advised frequent 'delestage' or rack and return, as well as punching down the cap, to extract good colour and ripe tannins. Post-fermentation maceration took place because the tannins were so ripe. Finally, the wine was aged in 100% new French barriques for 18 months and spent at least four months in bottle prior to release. Intense ruby red in colour, with perfumes of spiced, red fruits and nicely balanced toasty oak. On the palate the wine has excellent structure, with ripe fruit and sweet, soft tannins. It is full-bodied and well balanced, with a long, elegant finish. Limited Availability. (6 x 75 cl)

Poggio Antico MADRE Toscana IGT
Description: Poggio Antico is located in Montalcino, a small town in Tuscany about fifty kilometers south of Siena. The earliest written records of the estate date from the beginning of the 19th century, when the present boundaries were marked. At that time, the estate consisted of woodland, grassland, and three stone houses. The development of Poggio Antico started in the late 1970s, when electricity was brought in, vineyards were planted, and construction of the wine cellar began. The estate was purchased in 1984 by current owners Giancarlo and Nuccia Gloder, originally from Milan, who had fallen in love with the wines of Montalcino and the unique geographical position of Poggio Antico. These are exciting times for Poggio Antico with the release of Madre a brand new 'Supertuscan' red wine produced by Poggio Antico. Its first vintage, 2001, received a very positive reception at the preview presentation at Vinitaly in Verona in April 2003. The name 'Madre' comes from the homonymous property, which has always been part of the Poggio Antico estate. This location is facing south-southwest and it is well protected from the northern winds and consequently from the risk of late frosts. Its position (6 x 75 cl)

Poggio Argentiera FINISTERRE Rosso Toscana IGT
Description: Gianpaolo Paglia, an agronomist born and bred in Maremma, and Justine Keeling, an English marketing manager, bought the estate in 1997. They started making Morellino di Scansano , with the existing 6 Ha of old and high quality producing vineyards, whilst at the same time planting new vineyards using local varieties such as Sangiovese and Alicante. Additionally, they also built an modern winery and warehousing in 2002. Poggio Argentiera has emerged as one of Scansano's best wineries and it is today composed of two estates situated in two different areas of Tuscany's Maremma, near the town of Grosseto. At Podere Adua there is the head office, cellar as well as the winery and it is close to the Maremma Natural Park, in the coastal region of Grosseto. The second estate, Podere Keeling, is found in the hilly area to the North of the Scansano district, towards Monte Amiata. Made from a 50/50 split of Alicante and Syrah, the wine was fermented completely in small, open French oak barrels aged more than three years. Malolactic fermentation and maturation in second and third use barrels , for between 16 and 18 months, followed by 8 months in bottle before release. Finisterre is an original Mediterranean blend with a strong personality. The two varieties, Alicante and Shiraz, show notes of liquorice, chocolate and olive oil tomatoes. This is wonderfully drinkable wine, with a bold structure, superb freshness and intriguing complexity. (6 x 75 cl)

Poggiotondo THE BLEND IGT Toscana
Description: The Blend, a mini Super Tuscan, is a blend of 40% Sangiovese, 30% Merlot and 30% Syrah, all vinified separately and then blended together. The colour and soft tannins come from ripe grapes being given a cold soak prior to fermentation as well as from the oak treatment the wines undergo. The winemaker is looking for complexity from the Sangiovese, a juiciness from the Syrah and softness and roundness from the Merlot. (12 x 75 cl)

Querciabella BATAR Toscana IGT
Description: Querciabella, founded in 1974 began life as a 1 hectare vineyard but today has 26 hectares of vines producing great wine with an international reputation. Concentrating on small yields where the emphasis is placed on concentration and richness of the fruit, the vineyard is run according to biodynamic priciples that exceed the European Standard.. Querciabella is a Chianti Classico DOCG that presently produces four wines from the vineyards of its Chianti Classico estate in Greve in Chianti. Batar is a blend of Chardonnay and Pinot Blanc; Chianti Classico; Camartina a blend of Sangiovese and Cabernet Sauvignon while Palafreno, a new release, is a blend of Merlot and Sangiovese. Great care is taken in producing this wine from the separate pressing, fermentation and elevage of the Pinot Blanc and Chardonnay grapes; through to the barrel maturation that takes 9 to 12 months in French oak, 50% new and 50% one year old, that comes mainly from Troncais and Vosges, as well as from Allier. The final blending takes place in stainless steel, the wine is then bottled shortly after, and rests for about six months before release. This blend of 65% Chardonnay and 35% Pinot Blanc is a pale yellow coloured wine with floral and herb aromas. Showing white fruit flavours, cream and a little minerality this is a rich sophisticated wine with an enjoyable finish. Additionally: Between 1988 and 1991 the wine used to be called Batard-Pinot, and it was a blend of Pinot Blanc and Pinot Gris. Between 1992 and 1994, the name was Batard , because Chardonnay had been added to the blend. Since 1995, the name has been changed to Batar, in order to avoid confusion with French AOCs of Burgundy whose name contains the word 'Batard' . Magnum bottles available in Original Wooden Case.
