Description: In 1978 John and Harry Mariani, successful American importers, joined forces with Italy's leading enologist, Ezio Rivella; their objective was to produce top-quality wine on a scale never before attempted in Italy. Castello Banfi is a rarity among Italian wine estates, not just because of its size , its composition of single vineyards, or its state-of-the-art winery, but because it was started from scratch a little over 25 years ago. At that time the Mariani Brothers were looking for an estate where the climate and soil had to be ideal for the cultivation of many of the world's noble grape varieties, and it had to be within a region of Italy that already had a tradition of quality winemaking. The 4,500 acres that the Mariani Brothers first found were near Montalcino, and eligible for the status DOCG of Brunello di Montalcino, one of the most prestigious of all Italian wines and it met the other criteria as well. By good luck the adjacent estate, of 2,600 acres, became available shortly afterwards and in 1984 the 11th century castle was the final purchase, and the estate was renamed Castello Banfi. Today Castello Banfi is producing a wide range of wines including Brunello di Montalcino that was Italy's first wine to be accorded D.O.C.G. status, a testament to its aristocracy, balance and fabulous proclivity for ageing. This wine is a blend of 40% Sangiovese , 40% Cabernet Sauvignon and 20% Syrah. It is aged Approximately 23 months; 12 months as varietals and 11 months as a blend followed by 14-16 months bottle ageing. The colour is very deep and intense, while the aroma has fresh notes of cherry, plums and currants, complemented by hints of spice, tobacco and leather. Well structured, with excellent concentration and supple tannins, on the palate, it delivers rich fruit flavours with some subtle sweet notes, followed by a long finish. Drinkable now, but will age well. Available in Magnum bottles. (1 x 1.5 Litres)

Castello di Ama AMA AL POGGIO Bianco Tuscany
Description: Voted Winery of the Year 2005 by the Gambero Rosso, Ama’s history goes back to 1972 when four Roman families united to purchase the Ama estate with the goal of restoring it to the splendour of its 18th century heyday. New cellars were built, new plantings began with experimentation into non-indigenous varietals, and new methods of viticulture were pursued while in 1982. Marco Pallanti was introduced as winemaker. In 1984 Castello di Ama decided to increase the area devoted to chardonnay, and planted 4 more hectares in the area known as 'Poggio.' The grapes, were hand-picked with 60% fermented in stainless steel tanks and the rest in oak barrels. This has produced an interesting blend of Chardonnay, Pinot Grigio and Malvasia showing apple, peach and honey character. Medium-bodied, with a creamy texture and a long finish this is a wine to enjoy. (6 x 75 cl)

Description: Voted Winery of the Year 2005 by the Gambero Rosso, Ama’s history goes back to 1972 when four Roman families united to purchase the Ama estate with the goal of restoring it to the splendour of its 18th century heyday. New cellars were built, new plantings began with experimentation into non-indigenous varietals, and new methods of viticulture were pursued while in 1982 Marco Pallanti was introduced as winemaker. The Apparita vineyard is formed by several small parcels situated at the upper end of the Vigneto Bellavista vineyard. The area amounts to only 3.844 hectares and therefore production is strictly limited. This wine is a blend of Canaiolo and Malvasia Bianca grapes planted in 1975 as well as a Merlot clone regrafted to the rootstocks in 1982-1985. The vines are trained in the open lyre system and the soils are particularly rich in clay. Both factors make this small cru a jewel of world enology. Once malolactic fermentation had been completed, the wine was racked and assembled, then returned to the barrels. Maturation in wood, during which the wine was periodically tasted, lasted about 12 months, finally, the wine was then bottled. 'Beautiful nose of chocolate, cappuccino and berries. Full-bodied, with fine tannins and a fruity finish. Refined and well done.' (6 x 75 cl)

Castello di Ama ROSE Tuscany
Description: The terroir that yields Castello di Ama’s Rose is the same that yields its Chianti Classico. These vineyards were planted between 1964 and 1978, trained partly to vertical trellis and partly to Open Lyre. The wine, 90% sangiovese and 10% canaiolo, gains its considerable body from bleeding-off lots that will produce Chianti Classico; for this reason, the resulting wine is closer to a young red wine than to a white. Excellent structure and good holding potential over time are its principal qualities. But its fresh approachability, a hallmark of wines from fully ripe sangiovese, and the lushness of its fragrances combine to ensure that this rosato can be appreciated right from its first months in the bottle. (6 x 75 cl)

Castello di Ama VINSANTO Tuscany
Description: Voted Winery of the Year 2005 by the Gambero Rosso, Ama’s history goes back to 1972 when four Roman families united to purchase the Ama estate with the goal of restoring it to the splendour of its 18th century heyday. New cellars were built, new plantings began with experimentation into non-indigenous varietals, and new methods of viticulture were pursued while in 1982 Marco Pallanti was introduced as winemaker. The grapes that produce this Vinsanto were selected from the best malvasia bianca and trebbiano fruit from a total area of about 5 hectares in the Bellavista, Casuccia, and Bertinga vineyards. No more than 1-2 clusters per vine are suitable for producing this wine; such rigorous standards are necessary to ensure absolutely healthy, fully ripe grapes. Using the most experienced hand-harvested pickers a total of 214 quintals of exceptional malvasia and trebbiano toscano was selected.. The clusters, tied together and hung in special well-ventilated, open drying-lofts over a period of 60 days, lost 70% of their weight, thus concentrating their sugars. The whole clusters were then crushed and lightly pressed. The must was clarified by settling, and 200-litre lots then went into used Allier oak barriques. It then underwent the traditional fermentation in stages until the levels of alcohol and residual sugars brought an end to the fermentation. Finally, the Vinsanto was racked off the gross lees and returned to barrels to undergo 6 more years of oak ageing. Available in 37.5 cl Half Bottles. (6 x 37.5 cl)

Castello di Bossi GIROLAMO Toscana IGT
Description: The Bossi castle is situated in the Castelnuovo Berardenga commune in the midst of evergreen woods and fields full of fossil-rich minerals and has been a focus of local history for many centuries. Bought by the Bacci family it has been totally restored while the Bossi wines, made by oenologist Alberto Antonioni, have exalted fruit flavours; they are smooth, rich and complex, a far cry from the rustic tongue-dissolvers one associates with basic Chianti. The Girolamo is a lush plush Merlot from 30-year-old vines matured in French oak barrels for 12 months. A gloriously fruity wine reminiscent of just-made raspberry jam, silky and ample in the mouth.
