In 1729, the first member of the Warre family, William, arrived in Oporto and he became a partner in the firm and henceforth it was known as Messrs Clarke, Thornton and Warre. Ahead of his time, William Warre was the first British resident to acquire land in Vila Nova da Gaia, across the river from Oporto, later to become the centre for the port companies' lodges and administrative offices. Tradition is important and two or three times a decade, Warre's judge that their wines are of such outstanding quality that they merit consideration to be 'declared' a vintage. When such a wine becomes available it is sure to be a leader in its field and Warre's principal objective is to produce a vintage Port that continues the same superb reputation created by the great Warre's vintages of previous generations. Wines of this quality are made using the traditional treading techniques that have not changed in 2000 years, producing wines with intense colour and flavour. Selected from a number of top quality vineyards, including Warre's own Quinta da Cavadinha, the company's Vintage Port is aged in wooden cask for 18 months before being bottled unfiltered using a normal driven cork. Warre Vintage Port is produced for long aging in the bottle and therefore should always be stored lying down and decanted prior to serving. Tremendous backbone with a rich complexity of balanced fruit showing through. This elegant wine has the characteristic Warre flowery nose and its solidity shows it to be a lasting Vintage. W & J Graham's 1980 VintagePort Description: VintagePorts are only made on very exceptional years . The principal determining factor is the weather in the vineyards which must be ideal throughout the viticultural season and subsequently during the harvest. Only a few exceptional vineyards in the Upper Douro region produce wines of sufficient body and style to make a true VintagePort. After the harvest, wines of Vintage potential are put into oak barrels called 'pipes'. Some eighteen months later a careful and painstaking series of tastings is held to judge exactly which wines of different vineyards merit inclusion in the final blend. If the ideal blend is achieved, the wine is then bottled without any filtration whatsoever approximately 24 months after the original harvest . VintagePort must then be matured for some ten to twenty years in cool dark cellars as it gradually achieves the outstanding style of a great wine. The bottles should always be stored lying down. VintagePorts deposit a heavy sediment or 'crust' in the bottle while maturing and must be decanted prior to serving. A very few Port companies, through having consistently produced great VintagePorts over many years, enjoy outstanding reputations. Graham's is universally acknowledged to be a leader in this field. Calem QUINTA da FOZ Single Quinta 1984 VintagePort Description: Quinta is the Portuguese word for vineyard and thus, whenever a vintageport has the word quinta, one can be guaranteed that grapes come entirely from this place. Quinta da Foz is situated in the heart of Port Wine country with steep terraced slopes reaching all the way down to the Douro River. This special vintage has a deep, dark inky colour. Its rich bouquet is predominantly of forest fruits, notably ripe plums and prunes, with touches of cocoa and spices. On tasting it is mature, complex, full and rounded. Using only the best grapes of the 1986 harvest, this vintageport was aged for two years in fine oak vats before bottling. Ready to drink now, it will continue to mature for decades . As vintageport forms a natural deposit, stand the bottle upright for a couple of hours before careful decanting. This is a good vintage to have after a good dinner accompanied by a rich fruit tart or with mature cheeses (6 x 75 cl) Price: £124.48

W & J Graham's 1983 VintagePort Description: The Graham family entered the Port trade in 1820, when William and John Graham, manning the Douro office, accepted a consignment of Port as settlement of a bad debt. The Port was sent on to their main offices in Glasgow, Scotland, where it proved very popular, and the seed had been sown. This vintage has been considered: 'Lovely withdrawn nose with underlying concentration. Lots of bitter chocolate. Powerful, concentrated with lovely purity of fruit and ripe tannins, very fine. Lovely now, with a long way to go.' Richard Mayson, Decanter Magazine. (12 x 75 cl) Price: £539.88

Quinta do Noval Unfiltered Late Bottled VintagePort Description: This is a Port of only one harvest with 70% grapes from Quinta do Noval vineyards and 30% from 'A' quality grapes from their traditional suppliers, in the heart of the Douro Valley. W & J Graham's QUINTA dos MALVEDOS Single Quinta Port Description: Quinta dos Malvedos is rated among the finest vineyard properties in the Alto Douro. It lies on the north bank of the River Douro and its south-facing vineyards and very consistent climate ensure that in nearly every year the property will produce wines of first-class quality. The whole vineyard has the highest 'A' classification awarded by the controlling authorities. In 'declared' Vintage years the wines of Malvedos form the fundamental part of the blend which makes up Graham's VintagePorts. In many other years when there is not enough top quality wine for Graham's to declare a Vintage, the wine of Malvedos is nevertheless so fine that it is bottled on its own, unblended, when two years old and left to mature in bottle like other VintagePorts. Unlike declared Vintages, Malvedos VintagePort is normally only shipped when ready for drinking by which time it is usually at least ten years old, although it continues to improve for many years more. Graham's have been offering Malvedos VintagePort since 1951 and recent years to have been singled out for bottling include 1987, 1988 and 1990. Malvedos VintagePort throws a similarly heavy crust to Graham's VintagePorts and careful decanting is therefore required prior to serving. As with a declared Vintage, careful decanting is essential prior to serving. (6 x 75 cl) Price: £212.56

Dow's Crusted Port Description: The wines used for Dow's Crusted Port come principally from the company's two prime vineyards, Quinta do Bomfim and Quinta da Senhora da Ribeira. . Dow's Crusted is a blend of excellent young ports from two or three harvests, bottled without any fining or filtration. The Port was then aged in bottle in the Dow's cellars in Portugal for three years before being offered for sale. As with VintagePort the wine should be stored lying down and will require decanting prior to serving.. This Crusted Port is a deep dark red colour, while on the nose concentrated and rich aromas of cherry fruit abound with hints of spices also evident.
