Sherwood Estate is very much a family business, with Dayne and Jill Sherwood owning and operating it since the late 1980's. The winery is located in the picturesque Waipara Valley, while they have four vineyards also owned by Sherwood Estate in the famed Marlborough Region, at the top of the South Island. Based on nearly twenty years of growing grapes and making wine, Sherwood Estate now specialise in Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Riesling. Sherwood Estate produce three ranges of wines the Clearwater Range, the Sherwood Estate Range and the the Stratum Range. The Sherwood range proudly carries the name of the winery and reflects Sherwood Estate's commitment to the highest quality. The wines are varietally focussed and come from selected parcels in the Sherwood Estate Vinyards in Marlborough and Waipara. All the fruit was hand harvested and upon arrival at the winery, the fruit was destemmed, lightly crushed and gently tipped into open top fermenters. Yeast was added to initiate the ferment after a five day 'soak' period. Three times per day the cap was hand plunged and spent an average of 16 days 'on skins'. Next, Malolactic fermentation and oak maturation was undertaken for two months prior to blending and bottling. This deep red coloured Pinot Noir displays ripe, sweet plum notes with an edge of complexity on the nose. The nose follows onto the palate complemented by the rich and rounded style supported by fine grain tannins and smooth finish. (12 x 75 cl)

Jackson Wine Estates LA CREMA Pinot Noir Anderson Valley California
Description: Part of Jackson Wine Estates, La Crema winery was founded in 1979 and quickly established itself as a pioneer for intensely flavoured Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. This wine is from the Anderson Valley known for sloping hillside benches thta are blanketed by cool fog from the nearby Pacific Ocean during the heat of the summer growing season. These moderating conditions are ideal in cultivating Pinot Noir with naturally bright acidity and delicate red cherry and cranberry fruit aromas. The Anderson Valley is Mendocino’s premier growing region for Pinot Noir and this wine used the Dijon, heirloom Martini and Pommard clones to enhance the aroma and complexity. In the vineyard fruit-thinning is undertaken to remove late flowering clusters ensuring even ripening throughout the vineyards. Next the fruit is handpicked from the cool climate vineyards and delivered to the winery in small half ton bins to protect the integrity of the fruit. Once in the winery the Pinot Noir grapes are put on to a belt delivery system with sorting table to purge damaged fruit. Here only 70% of the whole berries are selected before fermentation takes place for greater fruit expression. Next a five day, 48 degree cold soak is completed before fermentation so that it enhances the silky tannin texture. Open top fermentation with cap punch downs four times daily extracts precise colour before the wine is aged 10 months in 100% French oak barrels refines the finish. Finally the Pinot Noir is bottled unfiltered and unfined to express the pure character of this great varietal. Winemaker Melissa Stackhouse had the following comments to make about this wine: 'Exotic aromas are delicate and floral with a hint of blueberry and herbal black tea. The flavours are focused on lush dark red cherry fruit which provides an enticing plush texture. Bright acidity accented by cranberry and red cherries create a seductive fruit entry that leads to a broad lingering finish.' (6 x 75 cl)

Hartford Family Winery HARTFORD COURT SEASCAPE VINEYARD Pinot Noir Sonoma Coast California
Description: Hartford Family Winery was founded in 1993 as a result of Don and Jennifer Hartford's appreciation for the wines, the people and the unique vineyards near their Russian River Valley home. Located in the Sonoma County town of Forestville, the winery is about 15 miles from the cool Pacific Coast. The fruit for the Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir is composed of exceptional, small block Pinot Noir vineyards located in the Sonoma Coast. Estate vineyards are the primary sources for this cepage, which is comprised of selected blocks from our Ross Road Vineyard , our Seascape and Annapolis Vineyards and a handful of growers within the Russian River Valley. Centuries old winemaking traditions from Burgundy are combined with twenty-first century technology to produce this juicy and delicious Pinot Noir. Hand harvesting in the cool of the morning, followed by meticulous hand sorting is a pre-requisite before de-stemming directly into open-top fermentors. Individual Pinot Noir batches are held at 50 degrees Fahrenheit for five to seven days before the grapes begin to ferment. During this cold soak, and throughout fermentation, the grapes are gently punched down by hand, to aid in the extraction of color and flavor while minimizing the extraction of hard or ‘unripe’ tannins from the seeds or stems. The wine is aged on fine sediment in small French oak barrels for 11 months and is racked once before bottling. Great care from the vineyard to the winery has produced a Pinot Noir showing aromas of rose petals, cherries, orange pekoe tea, lavender and smoke that are followed by flavours of ripe, red cherries, roasted plums, cinnamon, chocolate, anise and allspice. The complex aromas and dense, sweet mouthfeel are supported by centered acidity and fine grain tannins.

Stonier RESERVE Pinot Noir Mornington Peninsula Victoria Australia
Description: In 1978, Brian Stonier and his wife Noel established the Stonier vineyard in the coastal town of Merricks, one hour South-East of Melbourne and ten minutes from the challenging surf beaches of Bass Straight. Over 25 years later, the name Stonier is widely recognised as a producer of exceptional Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. At the heart of Stonier lies a meticulous approach to viticulture and winemaking, while tyhere is a real desire to reflect the imprint of each vineyard, through subtle variations in flavour and texture, interweaving these differences to form elegant wines of seamless complexity. Pinot Noir from the oldest vineyards was selected for this wine and fermented in small open fermenters with about 25% receiving extended skin maceration, and around 5% being whole bunch fermented. Post ferment the wine was pressed to French oak for malolactic fermentation and ageing with minimal winemaking interference occured before bottling. The Reserve shows an intensity and purity of fruit reflecting the great growing season, and has structure to reward medium term cellaring. A deep, bright red coloured wine the aromas of plums, redcurrants and maraschino cherries are evident while some floral and violet complexity complements the subtle French oak bouquet. Rich red fruit flavours dominate the palate and a typically generous and silky mid-palate is balanced by good acidity, while the fine grain tannins give great length and structure. (6 x 75 cl)

Louis Latour DOMAINE DE VALMOISSINE Pinot Noir Vin de Pays des Coteaux du Verdon Rouge
Description: The Domaine de Valmoissine is located on the site of the ancient monastery and university of Valmoissine at 500 metres above sea-level which guarantees sunshine during the summer months whilst remaining cool and limits the possibility of spring frosts. The ideally exposed south-facing vineyards bring the grapes to maturity at the same time as our Corton Grand Cru vineyards in Burgundy. They are entirely hand-picked before being fermented in stainless steel open-vats for a short period of 3-4 days. Pigeage will take place 2-3 times a day to extract colour and tannins. The wine is then matured in old oak casks from Maison Louis Latour's cooperage in Beaune in which the wines flavours and aromas develop naturally, and harmonise with the mellow wood flavours of the oak. The style of this wine resembles Burgundy's classical 'Vin Vermeil' that the first Louis Latour was producing at the end of the 18th century. Elegance and finesse packed with fruit, and a vivid 'vermeil' or bright red colour. Bottled after 8 months of maturation, it can be drunk with pleasure only a year after having been made. The resurrection of this style of wine already has a dedicated following. Soil: Argilo calcareous. Vinification: Traditional Burgundy techniques with oak-ageing. The Wine Magazine, April 1999: 90 points. 'Domaine de Valmoissine, located on a limestone plateau 50 miles North of Saint-Tropez, is cooled by mistral winds. There are no restrictions on grape varieties in this vin de pays zone which was created in 1992. Louis Latour has picked up the experimental gauntlet and created this stunning Pinot Noir. A lovely plum and blackcurrant nose. The palate has a bitter cherry, farmyard feel with an edge of ripe red plums and rich spice. A good characterful wine.' New Sotheby's Wine Encyclopaedia, Tom Stevenson: 'This stunning wine is easily the greatest vin de pays Pinot Noir ever produced. It could be the greatest vin de pays that has ever been produced from any grape variety, but it is not possible or fair to compare wines of totally different grapes and styles and say which is best. I am certain, however, that it is the most exciting vin de pays I have ever tasted. It is so soft and silky, with such a purity of fruit and so much finesse that few Burgundians would believe this is not a Burgundy, and a fine one at that. It's not cheap for a vin de pays, but it is better than many Burgundies twice its price.' The Wine Enthusiast November 15, 1998 tasting Domaine de Valmoissine 1996: 87 points. 'Pale ruby cast. Medium-bodied. Balanced acidity. Highly extracted. Mildly oaked. Brown spices, red fruits, dried herbs. Pleasantly aromatic, with a full and flavourful palate. Complex, yet delicate, with a well-balanced mouthfeel. Shows fine length and excellent varietal intensity.' Decanter October 1997 tasting Domaine de Valmoissine 1995 recommended: 'Smoky, chocolate aromas of medium intensity following onto the palate.' (12 x 75 cl)

Robert Mondavi PRIVATE SELECTION Pinot Noir Central Coast California
Description: At 90 years of age, Robert Mondavi remains the global emissary for these wine. His vision was to create wines in California that belong in the company of the great wines of the world. Robert Mondavi is known for producing hand-crafted wines of distinct style. Representing the best of California wine growing regions, including the legendary Napa Valley, each of the wines offers unique qualities and characteristics. Robert Mondavi have long recognized the distinctive vineyards of California's coast. For decades they have sourced fruit from coastal regions, and in 1994 introduced Robert Mondavi Private Selection wines to exhibit the high quality and character of the coastal grapes and vineyards. For vivid fruit expression, Mondavi harvested 95% of the grapes from Monterey County, with the balance from Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo Counties. Approximately half of the Pinot Noir grapes were harvested from its own vineyards, the balance from well known local growers. This wine has a little Syrah and this has come from both San Luis Obispo and Monterey Counties. To achieve the fruit-forward style of this Pinot Noir Mondavi lightly crushed the grapes and fermented the must in temperature controlled tanks. After the wine fermented dry , it was left on the skins with the wine for a total of 13 days to naturally soften tannins and develop varietal complexity. The wine completed malolactic fermentation for roundness and depth and was aged for five months, in a combination of new and older French and American oak barrels, to add toasty nuances to the lush fruit flavours. Additionally, a blend of 5% Syrah enhances the spicy profile of the wine. The wine's silky layers of cherry, raspberry and red plum intertwine with fragrant allspice and floral accents. Ageing in small, French oak barrels adds spicy, toasty nuances that continue through the lingering finish. (6 x 75 cl)

Saint Clair DOCTORS CREEK Reserve Pinot Noir NZ
Description: Saint Clair is owned by Neal and Judy Ibbotson, two of Marlborough's earliest vineyard pioneers, who planted their first vines in 1978. Grapes were originally supplied to local wine companies. However, a desire to extend the quality achieved in the vineyard through to the finished wine, led to the establishment of Saint Clair Estate Wines. The Saint Clair name originates from the main vineyard property, which was originally settled by the 'Sinclair' family. James Sinclair built one of the first homes in Blenheim and was closely associated with the development of the early town. With the passage of time the name reverted to the original, Saint Clair. The Saint Clair label, designed by Graphic Designer Tony Ibbotson of Sydney, depicts the golden glow of the hidden Marlborough valley with the halo silhouetted above. Fruit for this wine was sourced from several low cropping vineyards in the Omaka Valley, Brancott Valley and Doctor's Creek. The grapes were hand-picked at optimum ripeness and carefully transported to the winery for de-stemming and must chilling to small open top stainless steel fermenters. At dryness each batch was pressed to tank and then racked off gross lees to a mixture of new and used French oak. The was inoculated for malolactic fermentation and aged for eight months on lees before being blended, stabilized, lightly egg white fined and then prepared for bottling. A bright ruby red coloured wine it has a bouquet of black cherries, plums and currants with lifted floral notes well integrated with toasty oak characters and savoury mushroom. This is a delicious, medium-bodied Pinot Noir with a palate dominated by cherry flavours with hints of currants and plums. This wine has well balanced acidity, supple tannins and flavours that linger. A combination of new and old French oak provides rich savoury notes on the palate with a full lingering finish. Gallo Family Vineyards SONOMA COUNTY Pinot Noir California
Description: Winemaking has been a tradition in the Gallo family for almost 70 years and in developing the Ernest & Julio Gallo Sonoma wines, the winemakers have made a careful journey from vine to wine. The journey begins in Sonoma County where cool ocean breezes, lingering coastal fog and the warm sun nurture the ripening grapes. It ends with patient barrel-by-barrel tasting during fermentation and ageing to ensure that the potential tasted on the vine is captured in the bottle. More than other varietals, perhaps, Pinot Noir is a winemaker's wine, especially in the opportunities it provides for finessing delicate nuances of flavour or character. California's Sonoma County makes this challenge even more appealing by the excellent quality of its Pinot Noir grapes. Vineyards near the coast offer virtually ideal weather conditions with warm daytime temperatures during the growing season, followed by heavy fog intrusion at night and dramatically cooler conditions. Such a climate cycle slows down the ripening process, enabling Pinot Noir to develop crisp acids, good colour and great depth of flavour on the vine. Once in the winery the grapes were de-stemmed to limit the extraction of bitter tannin and delivered to the fermenting tanks uncrushed, since broken and macerated skins can be another source of excess tannin in the finished wine. Fermentation with 20-30% whole berries results in Pinot Noir rounder in body and fresher in flavour. The wine was 100% barrel aged for 6 months, during which time it gained greater complexity by completing a secondary cycle of malolactic fermentation. This care has produced a distinct fruit-forward character with intense flavours of dark red fruit-cherry and ripe raspberry. This Pinot Noir is framed by fresh earthy notes and a velvety finish showing a subtle layer of sweet vanilla oak. (6 x 75 cl)
