Dry Creek Vineyards Merlot Dry Creek Valley California
Description: Dry Creek Vineyard was the first new winery to be established in the Dry Creek Valley since the days of Prohibition, when David Stare arrived in 1972. Today, Dry Creek Vineyard wines are easy to recognise due to the spirited yacht paintings that appear on the label of each bottle. David Stare's pioneering vision launched a new era of premium wine production in the Dry Creek Valley. Inspired by his travels throughout the traditional wine regions of France and Germany, Dave's focus was ever on quality. To persue this focus, small batch winemaking has been adopted because individual-lot winemaking promotes increased knowledge about how to manage each vineyard while offering maximum blending options and enhanced quality control. Dry Creek Vineyard insists on crafting each lot of wine separately with each vineyard lot crushed, fermented, and barrel aged separately. Approximately 75-100 different wines are produced each vintage, where fining is the exception, not the rule. This Merlot has a little Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc to produce a lovely red coloured wine with a fragrant bouquet of berries and cedar while there are aromas of berry flavours and cinnamon-clove accents. Tightly structured, the dark forrest fruit flavours abound while the wine lingers for a long period on the palate and finish. (12 x 75 cl)

Bodegas Anadas CARE Finca Bancales Garnacha Cabernet Carinena Spain
Description: Situated in the village of Carinena, at the heart of the eponymous region, Bodegas Anadas is a new producer with ambitions well beyond those of any others in the region. With 100 hactares of mature vineyards, situated in the foothills of the Sistema Iberico mountain range, it only produces restricted yields of Garnacha , Tempranillo, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah and Chardonnay. Aiming to be the new face 'La Nueva Cara' of Carinena, Care's striking label design sets them apart from the mainstream and gives a clue to the modern, yet characterful style of the wines being made. The Garnacha Cabernet, Finca Bancales certainly sets new levels of achievement for the region and it's rich, concentrated, multi layered complexity fires a shot accross the bows of some of its more illustrious neighbouring regions. Joseph Phelps Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley California
Description: Founded in 1972, Joseph Phelps Vineyards is an independent, estate-based winery located outside of St. Helena. Perched on a knoll in bucolic Spring Valley, the graceful redwood winery overlooks vineyard-studded hills, the town of St. Helena and the Mayacamas Mountains to the west. Long known for his innovative spirit and passion for quality, Joe Phelps pioneered a number of 'firsts' in the early years of the winery. The 1974 Insignia — released in the spring of 1978 — was the first Bordeaux-style blend produced in California under a proprietary label. The release of the 1974 Syrah in 1977 sparked industry-wide interest in a remarkable French varietal whose plantings in California had disappeared and been virtually forgotten for over half a century. And in 1990, after years of research, a whole new family of Rhône-style wines was introduced which today includes Syrah, Viognier and a Chateauneuf-du-Pape style blend called Le Mistral. 83% Cabernet Sauvignon, 6% Merlot, 8% Petite Verdot and 3% Cabernet Franc from estate-owned vineyards and independent growers. Grapes were harvested at an average 25.4º Brix, fermented in stainless steel tanks, then aged 20 months in a combination of new French and American oak barrels and two- to four-year-old French and American oak , before being blended and bottled prior to release. The Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon is full of ripe fruit notes of blackberry and Bing cherry with a dash of curry and allspice. The oak is well integrated and helps mold the smooth, silky finish and sweet tannins, which linger on the palate. (12 x 75 cl)

Horse Mountain QUAGGA RIDGE Red Voor-Paardeberg Paarl RSA
Description: Horse Mountain Wines embody a new spirit of adventure in winemaking in the Cape with a fresh, entrepreneurial approach, unfettered by conventional tradition but rooted in the tried and tested philosophy that fine wine is made in the vineyard. These wines come from a former dairy farm on the slopes of the Paardeberg mountain between Paarl and Wellington. The 217ha property was acquired in 1997 after its potential as a suitable terroir for quality wine production had been identified. Since then, energetic owner Craig Lardner, a former property developer with a new-found passion for winemaking, and innovative consultant viticulturist Paul Wallace, have systematically selected nearly 50ha of the 150ha of viticulturally viable ground for painstaking preparation and careful cultivation to five grape varieties. The grapes grown include Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz that flourish on the high-lying, high-potential Vilefontes soils. While the Merlot and Pinotage have settled in the lower-lying, rich red Swartland/Glenrosa soils and Cabernet Franc does well in the similarly low-altitude Estcourt soils. Such significant variations in soil comnbined with an exceptional climate compared with conditions in the surrounding Paarl wine growing district, earned this new viticultural pocket its own 'ward' status in 2003. Horse Mountain wines thus proudly bear the designation Wine of Origin Voor-Paardeberg on their labels. The wine is made from a balance of fine quality Merlot and Pinotage grapes from the Voor Paardeberg region. As a result this wine has a soft, smooth berry ripeness produced from a fine marriage of noble red grape varieties. The wine has a delicious juicy middle palate with no evidence of excessive sharpness or tannins. (12 x 75 cl)

Bremerton MATILDA PLAINS Cabernet Shiraz Merlot Langhorne Creek South Australia
Description: Matilda Plains is an exciting new range from the Bremerton stable. Bremerton is a small family owned winery in the prestigious Langhorne Creek region of South Australia. The Bremerton story began in 1985 when Craig and Mignonne Willson purchased the property and established a long term restoration and development plan. The winery was established in 1988 and now has 110 acres planted at Langhorne Creek and is joint owner and manager of another 180 acres from which it selects the best fruit each year for its wines. The winemaking team headed by family member and winemaker Rebecca Willson has taken the quality of the wines to new standards. Rebecca seeks the best possible fruit from the Bremerton Estate and other specialised Langhorne Creek vineyards to craft traditional, full bodied, full flavoured, mouth filling Langhorne Creek wines that show a consistency of style whilst encouraging the true varietal grape characteristics to be expressed. Matilda Plains provides a modern, unique, and delicious range of wines. The distinctive label features the Willson family's much loved border collie Matilda helping in the vineyard. Ca'del Bosco CARMENERO Franciacorta Lombardy
Description: Located in Erbusco, in the province of Lombardy, Ca'del Bosco is widely recognized as one of Italy's greatest wine estates. In 1968, Ca'del Bosco was founded on two hundred and thirty acres, and planted with chardonnay, pinot blanc and pinot noir, the traditional varietals of Franciacorta. After years of significant investment, technological improvements and the usual experience brought about by trial and error, Ca'del Bosco has won a reputation as one of the world's most prominent producers of not only fine sparkling wines, but also still wines. In 1998, Gambero Rosso, the leading authority on Italian wines, began referring to the estate as one of the few Stars in Italy, having won so many coveted Three Glasses awards. In 2002, the winery was named Winery of the Year byt the same publication. Ca’del Bosco Carmenero is made only from estate-grown carmènere, that was in fact originally thought to be Cabernet Franc. Investigations were undertook and it was established that what in the North of Italy was called Cabernet Franc and in Chile Merlot was, in fact, Carmènere. This is reflected in the colorful graphic that adorns the Carmenero label, that of a wolf shedding its outer appearance (6 x 75 cl)

Chateau Belgrave 5eme Cru Classe Haut-Medoc
Description: On taking over the management of Château Belgrave in 1979, Dourthe set itself the ambitious task of returning this prestigious Haut-Medoc Grand Cru Classé to its former glory and making wines worthy of its rank. It was under the name of Château Coutenceau that the estate was classified as a 5 Grand Cru Classé in 1855. Contrary to what could be imagined, Château Belgrave does not owe its name to the superb gravel that makes up the soil and subsoil of the whole of the estate, but to the attachment of one of its British owners to the district of Belgravia in London where he lived. Thus it was that Château Coutenceau became Château Belgrave. The estate was renowned not only for its wines, but also for the abundant game that was to be found in its woods and the receptions given at the Château in the hunting season. This link between the estate and hunting explains the presence of a ferret the labels on the wines of the Château. Château Belgrave is one of the oldest crus in the Médoc, it is located in Saint-Laurent, on the border of Saint-Julien and the appellation is only separated by a stream. The vineyard with its 55 hectares in a single stretch was ranked as a 5Grand Cru Classé for the exceptional quality of its deep gravel. Michel Rolland is now the consultant Encologist at this Chateau. The harvest is traditionally picked by hand, using small trays, the grapes are put in temperature-controlled stainless steel vats, while part of the wine is then matured in barrel on lees to preserve the aromas. Finally, ageing occurs in oak barrels between 15 to 18 months. This wine is a blend of 85% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Petit Verdot and displays all the concentration and finesse one has come to expect from this excellent Chateau, ripe fruit, excellent concentration, balanced tannins and a long lingering, dry finish. The 2000 Vintage is a typical Haut-Medoc with the terrior reflected in the aromas and flavour of this lovely deep red coloured wine. Firm tannins and great tannic structure are complemented by the long finish. Available in half bottles. (12 x 37.5 cl)

Tenuta San Guido GUIDALBERTO IGT Bolgheri Tyrrhenian Coast
Description: The Incisa della Rocchetta family, who own Tenuta San Guido, as well as the world famous Sassicaia wine, was a key player in the medieval and renaissance history of northern Italy. Incidently a seal from this period inspired the current label that Mario Incisa della Rocchetta designed for his wine. While the Incisa della Rocchetta family prospered through the centuries and one member of the family who stands out is Guidalberto della Gherardesca who this wine is named after. Guidalberto della Gherardesca lived at the beginning of the 1800s and was an Incisa ancestor. A pioneer of modern agriculture in the Bolgheri area he was known for his many land reclamation projects. However, Guidalberto was also known for his experiments in the winegrowing sector, which were already state of the art for his time, as well as for having planted the famous 'Cypress Road' which is now a national historic landmark. The grapes are grown in a vineyard on lands adjacent to the Sassicaia vineyard. The grape varieties are approximately 45% Merlot, 45% Cabernet Sauvingnon and 10% Sangiovese. After a careful harvest the grapes are then vinified in a new cellar created especially by the Tenuta San Guido in the locality known as 'Vecchio Frantoio' not far from the town of Bolgheri. Next the grapes were fermented in steel vats at controlled temperatures with a maceration period of 15 days for the the Merlot and the Cabernet Sauvignon. However, the Sangiovese grapes spent a little less time, 12 days, fermenting. The wine was then aged in French and American oak barriques for 14 months, one-third of the barriques being new ones. The wine is characterised by its excellent fulllness, gentleness and softness, having an organoleptic depth without sharpness. An excellent, very well-balanced structure and great persistence are already detectable on the palate while the finish is long for this well made wine. (6 x 75 cl)
