Description: Plantagenet is one of Western Australia's top names, and I am a huge fan of their wines, having awarded "wine of the week" to the Omrah Shiraz recently. This Pinot Noir weighs in wiith a hefty 14.5% alcohol, so is no wishy-washy wine. It spends 10 months in French oak barrels too, giving it a very spicy, quite Burgundian character. On the nose it has masses of cloves, cinammon and hints of tobacco, with a lovely, soft layering of strawberies and cream fruit. On the palate it is silky and medium-bodied, with an initial burst of sweet-edged cherry, strawberry and vanilla, before an earthier, truffle and hedgerow quality sweeps through. With polished background tannins and some fine cherry acidity, this is a really well balanced and elegant wine with a long, lingering, sweet finish, despite that powerful alcohol. Description: The Chardonnay is pale straw in colour with fresh perfumes of melon and ripe peaches, balanced by a nutty, toasty creaminess. It is still fresh on the palate, but has an attractive fullness. Fresh flavours carry through to the finish. The Hellfire Bay wines are made at Plantagenet with fruit sourced from various vineyards in Western Australia. Legend says that the first white settlers arriving in Western Australia believed they were sailing through the gates of hell as they watched St. Elmo’s fire light up the sky above them. As they prayed for mercy they named the area Hellfire Bay. The wines over-deliver in every way; they have wonderful fruit intensity and as a result haven’t had to resort to residual sugar, as too many wines at this price level do. Description: Gavin Berry works hardest on his Pinot Noir and certainly produces a wine to make Burgundians worry. Grapes, sourced from Mount Barker and Pemberton are transformed into a wine which combines richness of fruit and gamey complexity. 100% Pinot Noir the wine is made using open fermenters and plunged, while it is aged 35% in New Oak for 12 months with lees stirred . This has produced a light brick red showing a generous aroma of strawberry and dark cherries. Subtle floral spice, star anise and toasty characters are evident in the background. On the Palate Strawberry and dark cherry characters are in abundance complemented by underlying subtle mandarin peel accents. Firm but fine tannins, mouth-filling creamy texture and intense lingering flavours are to be found on the great finish.

This Cabernet Sauvignon is a deep brick red colour with purple hues and an aroma of intense blackcurrant leaf, mint and plums interlaced with subtle earth and toasty oak. The palate is tightly structured, offering generous mid palate textures.
