Light & Fruity Reds
Description:
The Merlot/Corvina has a lovely, vibrant colour and a ripe, fresh nose. The wine’s cherry blossom perfume, characteristic of great Corvina from Verona, mingles with a soft, blackberry fruit. Soft and attractive on the palate, it has sufficient weight to partner a wide range of pasta and rice dishes, particularly the risotto dishes for which this area is known. These wines are made by Matt Thomson, at the Cantina di Monteforte. Verona’s ‘Ponte Pietra’ dates back to Roman times. The vine, however, has been planted on the hills outside of Verona for much longer than this bridge has spanned the Adige River. This fresh, vibrant and easy drinking wine is firmly within this long tradition of Veronese viniculture. (12 x 75 cl)

MattThomson PONTE PIETRA Trebbiano Garganega del Veneto
Description: This Trebbiano/Garganega is lightly floral on the nose, with perfumes reminiscent of the almond blossom that characterises the best white wines from this region. The attractive crisp green apple fruit on the palate gives way to a fresh, zingy finish. The wine is made with fruit that is declassified from Soave DOC status. The fruit for this wine is grown on the slopes of vineyards situated next to the Soave zone in the Val d’Alpone. The vineyards have excellent south east exposure, with soils of volcanic origin. Monteforte director, Gaetano Tobin, known as Tano, is a great believer in using solely Garganega in his Soave, so the Trebbiano that his growers have is given IGT status. These wines are made by MattThomson, at the Cantina di Monteforte. Verona’s ‘Ponte Pietra’ dates back to Roman times. The vine, however, has been planted on the hills outside of Verona for much longer than this bridge has spanned the Adige River. Turner TINPOT HUT Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc NZ
Description: The Tinpot Hut Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc is a concentrated and complex wine with powerful passionfruit and blackcurrant flavours, with underlying grapefruit and mineral notes. This wine is pleasingly rich and powerful with a well balanced acidity that leads to a long lingering finish. Winemaker Fiona Turner has worked with MattThomson on many of the most successful wines made in Marlborough. The tinpot hut that gave its name to Fiona’s brand is an old mustering hut in the remote hills between the Wairau and Awatere Valleys. These huts were used as a base for musterers, who were responsible for rounding up the sheep that had been in the hills from spring to autumn and bringing them down to the low paddocks for the winter. Fiona sourced the fruit primarily from her own vineyard in Blind River and combined it with grapes from some other carefully selected sites in Marlborough. After juice clarification, the wine was inoculated with pure, aromatic yeast strains and cool fermented. Once dry the wine was stabilised, filtered and bottled. (6 x 75 cl) Price: £57.53

Delta Vineyards HATTERS HILL Pinot Noir Marlborough NZ
Description: Lovely purity and liveliness of fruit. It shows typical black cherry perfume on the nose, with lively yet supple fruit on the palate supported by fine grained tannins. The 40-hectare Delta Vineyard site in Marlborough was bought in 2001 by four partners, amongst whom are winemaker MattThomson and UK based wine importer David Gleave MW. It was planted solely with Pinot Noir in 2002 and 2003 and produced its first vintage in 2004. The combination of low vigour clay soils and the best of the new Dijon clones gives us superb fruit, some of the best Pinot I've ever worked with in Marlborough, says Thomson. Alpha Zeta 'G' Garganega Veneto
Description: A wine that is medium bodied with flavours of ripe peaches, spice and hints of honeysuckle. It is an attractive, quaffable wine that will appeal to those looking for something new from Italy. It has been bottled young to preserve its fresh fruit character. Winemaker MattThomson has thinks this is the best vintage yet of Garganega that he has produced. The superb weather in September and October ensured that the late ripening Garganega grapes reached maturity in ideal conditions. It was then Matt's job to retain these flavours, something he has done admirably. Greater ripeness and more flavour were obtained by reducing yields and picking later. (12 x 75 cl) Price: £70.66

Delta Vineyard Marlborough Pinot Noir NZ
Description: The Delta Vineyard Marlborough Pinot Noir has deep colour with very strong pinot noir aromatic characters. It has very lifted cherry aromas and violet notes. The palate has a silky start and a grainy, mineral-rich finish. It is juicy, but focussed. The Delta Farm, first established in 1848, was purchased in 2000 by four partners, including winemaker MattThomson and David Gleave of Liberty Wines. The Delta Vineyard has 30 hectares of Pinot Noir. It is situated on the West Coast Highway in Marlborough in New Zealand’s South Island. Yields are about 7 tonnes per hectare. Vertical shoot positioning is used to give the vines’ canopy the sunlight it needs, and to give the grapes the degree of exposure they require to ripen. The clay soil, combined with the elevation of the vineyard and the factors that make Marlborough such a successful viticultural region (6 x 75 cl) Price: £74.45

Delta Vineyard Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc NZ
Description: Light, pale lemon yellow in colour, the Delta Sauvignon Blanc has tremendous intensity on the nose, with perfumes of passion fruit and blackcurrants. On the palate, it is clean and fresh, with good balance between elegant, ripe fruit, crisp minerally acidity and a long, perfumed finish. Sheena Gray, wife of winemaker MattThomson, bought this 10 hectare site in Marlborough’s Dillon’s Point in 2001. Matt is convinced that the slightly cooler nights in this sub-region produce wines with more aromatic qualities than other areas. Together with Malcolm Adams, a viticulturist with more than 20 years experience, Matt and Sheena have created one of Marlborough’s mosts outstanding vineyards for Sauvignon Blanc. The soils have a high mineral content and good drainage due to the sand lying beneath the soil’s surface. The wine is bottled under the Stelvin closure, so that it can be enjoyed free from cork taint and in perfect condition. (12 x 75 cl) Price: £128.84
