Description: Classification: Second growth in the 1855 Classification of the Medoc Grape variety: 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc, 5% Petit Verdot. History: The name, given by the former owner Monsieur Ducru, literally and appropriately means "beautiful pebbles". The chief feature of the vineyard is its richness in the pebbles, or "cailloux" which contribute to the greatness of so many wines of the Medoc. This gravel, about 5 meters deep, is on a calcareous base of about the same thickness. Just before the war, the vineyard became run down and many Bordeaux critics felt it no longer deserved its place as a second growth. In 1942 the Borie family purchased the vineyard and raised it to heights that it had never known before, receiving top ratings amongst the Second Growths. Successive generations of the Borie family oversee all winemaking operations. Vinification and ageing: Traditional vinification methods apply, the wine is aged 20 months in barrels of which half are replaced annually. Style: Supple yet full-bodied, a typically fine Saint Julien that needs 8-10 years to reveal its rich and fruity, elegant flavors of cassis, vanilla and ripe blackberries. Size: 112 acres producing 12,000 to 19,000 cases.
Region: France, Bordeaux, St-Julien
Producer: Chateau Ducru-Beaucaillou

Chateau Talbot 4eme Cru Classe Saint Julien
Description: This impressive estate owes its name to Connetable Talbot, Commander in Chief of the English Army and hero of the Battle of Castillon in 1453. Chateau Talbot is in an ideal location a short distance from the Gironde Estuary, here the vines grow in fine gravelly rises, which alone are capable of producing the region's great wines. Talbot is one of the most ancient estates in the Medoc and has fortunately passed from one competent manager to another over the centuries, and is fully worthy of its classification in 1855 as a great growth. Today, the Cordier family own Talbot ever since the early 1900's and several generations of the family have shown their deep understanding of the importance of quality. This classified growth of Saint-Julien owes its first-rate reputation to the particularly charming character of its wine. Unfailingly consistent, Talbot embodies with elegance all the complexity of its terroir. Firm, well-rounded tannins offer a smoothness ever present over the years, although being highly concentrated, it can be left to age for many years even though it is tempting to drink it young to enjoy the fullness of its fruity aromas and silken finish. (12 x 75 cl)

Chateau Belgrave 5eme Cru Classe Haut-Medoc
Description: On taking over the management of Château Belgrave in 1979, Dourthe set itself the ambitious task of returning this prestigious Haut-Medoc Grand Cru Classé to its former glory and making wines worthy of its rank. It was under the name of Château Coutenceau that the estate was classified as a 5 Grand Cru Classé in 1855. Contrary to what could be imagined, Château Belgrave does not owe its name to the superb gravel that makes up the soil and subsoil of the whole of the estate, but to the attachment of one of its British owners to the district of Belgravia in London where he lived. Thus it was that Château Coutenceau became Château Belgrave. The estate was renowned not only for its wines, but also for the abundant game that was to be found in its woods and the receptions given at the Château in the hunting season. This link between the estate and hunting explains the presence of a ferret the labels on the wines of the Château. Château Belgrave is one of the oldest crus in the Médoc, it is located in Saint-Laurent, on the border of Saint-Julien and the appellation is only separated by a stream. The vineyard with its 55 hectares in a single stretch was ranked as a 5Grand Cru Classé for the exceptional quality of its deep gravel. Michel Rolland is now the consultant Encologist at this Chateau. The harvest is traditionally picked by hand, using small trays, the grapes are put in temperature-controlled stainless steel vats, while part of the wine is then matured in barrel on lees to preserve the aromas. Finally, ageing occurs in oak barrels between 15 to 18 months. This wine is a blend of 85% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Petit Verdot and displays all the concentration and finesse one has come to expect from this excellent Chateau, ripe fruit, excellent concentration, balanced tannins and a long lingering, dry finish. The 2000 Vintage is a typical Haut-Medoc with the terrior reflected in the aromas and flavour of this lovely deep red coloured wine. Firm tannins and great tannic structure are complemented by the long finish. Available in half bottles. (12 x 37.5 cl)
