Domaine Jean-Jacques Confuron Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru
Description: Alain Meunier and his wife, Sophie own this 7 hectare vineyard estate based at Premaux-Prissey, south of Nuits, additionally they have vineyard holdings in many parts of the Cotes de Nuits. Attention to detail and a passion for their work has produced wines with an exciting and enviable reputation. The grapes are grown organically and, to maximise the fruit, all the grapes are de-stemmed before vinification. These are powerful, rich wines that are bottled early to protect their intense, concentrated fruit. The wines are only racked before bottling, so there is 15-18 months of extended lees contact. The grand crus are aged in 100% new French oak, and the premier crus in 80%. The Domaine owns vines in a perfect part of the Clos Vougeot vineyard and makes one of the greatest examples of this appellation. Firm, chewy and dark ripe fruit, a full and defined structure with plenty of ripe tannins to balance the great long finish. Big, roasted nose combines ripe cherry, chocolate, licorice, mint and spicy oak. Large-scaled, fat, rich and sweet, with a mouthfilling texture. Low in acidity but seemed to grow fresher with air. Finishes rather suave, with considerable chocolatey oak and very good aromatic persistence. Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar, Mar/Apr 2004 (6 x 75 cl)

Domaine Albert Belle Hermitage Rouge
Description: This family estate in the Northern Rhone has forged an enviable reputation for supple, generous wines. Previously a member of the local co-op the Belle family have rapidly made a name for themselves as a producer to watch. The domaine extends to 19 hectares in 4 communes and two appellations, Crozes-Hermitage and Hermitage. The red wines are produced traditionally using whole bunches of grapes and extended maceration. They are then matured in oak for between 12 and 18 months with 20 to 25% new barrels each year. 'Bright medium ruby coloured wine with inky, slightly medicinal aromas of black cherry, violet, menthol and new oak, as well as hints of smoke and tomato. Dense, rich and peppery this is a fairly fat style of Hermitage.' Stephen Tanzer (12 x 75 cl)

Then sweet, fat and full in the mouth, with almost exotic ripeness for the year. But the flavours of this rather voluptuous Hermitage are still inexpressive. Finishes plummy and long, with plenty of smoke and chocolate from the oak.' Stephen Tanzer (12 x 75 cl)
