Avignonesi 50 & 50 Toscana IGT
Description: Even more sought after than Desiderio and the Grandi Annate Avignonesi' 50 & 50 is an oustanding and iconoclastic. This wine, as important and special as it is rare being a collaboration between Merlot and Sangiovese . Once in the winery this wine spend 18 months in barriques and a further 18 months in bottle. Bright, youthful ruby red in colour, this wine shows great balance between these two grape varieties. The soft, rounded Merlot softens the Sangiovese, adding flesh to its elegant fruit. Very intense to the last, with the firm tannins characteristic of young Sangiovese and wonderful long length. Avignonesi is one of the great names of Italian wine. Ettore and Alberto Falvo have, over the past 30 years, taken a small estate and built it into a paradigmatic producer that has put Montepulciano on the map. The modernisation that took place at Avignonesi in the 1970s and early 1980s abated somewhat towards the end of the latter decade, but new energy has once again been injected into the business by the next generation of Falvos. Avignonesi has four estates, two in Montepulciano and two in the DOC zone of Cortona, situated to the east of Montepulciano in the foothills of the Apennines. These estates have about 115 hectares of vineyard and have been the area of greatest focus for Avignonesi over the past decade. Ettore Falvo has translated his passion for alberello training into the new vineyards planted on their estates. New Sangiovese vineyards are planted at a density of 7500 vines per hectare and the modified alberello they are using ensures earlier ripening, which has given fuller, riper wines than Montepulciano was previously capable of producing. (6 x 75 cl)

La Spinetta SEZZANA Rosso Toscana IGT
Description: The Rivetti family story begins in the 1890s, when Giovanni Rivetti, grandfather of the three Rivetti brothers, Carlo, Bruno and Giorgio, left Piedmont for Argentina. Like many Italians of that time, he dreamed of returning rich and a powerful man, perhaps even one day able to make a great wine in his homeland. He never did, though his son, Giuseppe did. Pin married Lidia, bought vineyards and began to make wine. In 1977 the family took up residence at La Spinetta in Castagnole Lanze and still run the estate today. The Sezzana Estate was purchased in 2001 to produce wines of great flavour and character. Great care and dedication is taken to produce this 100% Sangiovese wine that has spent 12-14 months in new french Oak before being transfered to stainless steel vats for 3 months. Finally, without any filtration or clarifying, it is aged another 3-4 months in the bottle. This has produced a dark ruby red coloured wine with scents of ripe berries, vanilla and coffee while the influence of oak is evident. Full bodied with sweet tannins the impeccably balanced wood and acidity deliver through to the long fine finish. (12 x 75 cl)

Castello Banfi COL DI SASSO Sangiovese Cabernet Sauvignon Toscana IGT
Description: In 1978 John and Harry Mariani, successful American importers, joined forces with Italy's leading enologist, Ezio Rivella; their objective was to produce top-quality wine on a scale never before attempted in Italy. Castello Banfi is a rarity among Italian wine estates, not just because of its size , its composition of single vineyards, or its state-of-the-art winery, but because it was started from scratch a little over 25 years ago. At that time the Mariani Brothers were looking for an estate where the climate and soil had to be ideal for the cultivation of many of the world's noble grape varieties, and it had to be within a region of Italy that already had a tradition of quality winemaking. The 4,500 acres that the Mariani Brothers first found were near Montalcino, and eligible for the status DOCG of Brunello di Montalcino, one of the most prestigious of all Italian wines and it met the other criteria as well. By good luck the adjacent estate, of 2,600 acres, became available shortly afterwards and in 1984 the 11th century castle was the final purchase, and the estate was renamed Castello Banfi. Today Castello Banfi is producing a wide range of wines including Brunello di Montalcino that was Italy's first wine to be accorded D.O.C.G. status, a testament to its aristocracy, balance and fabulous proclivity for ageing. Col di Sasso, which translates to 'Stony Hill' is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Sangiovese grapes cultivated on the most rocky and impervious slopes of the Banfi estate in Montalcino, Tuscany. Typically harvested in early October, each grape variety is vinified separately with the Sangiovese imparting body, while stainless steel aged Cabernet Sauvignon adds fruit and structure. Intense ruby red colour this wine has fresh aromas and flavours of cassis, plum, and cherry with hints of green bell pepper. Well structured with balanced acidity the rich juicy fruit of the Cabernet Sauvignon is well-balanced by the soft tannins and structure of the Sangiovese. Available in half bottles. (12 x 37.5 cl)

Querciabella BATAR Toscana IGT
Description: Querciabella, founded in 1974 began life as a 1 hectare vineyard but today has 26 hectares of vines producing great wine with an international reputation. Concentrating on small yields where the emphasis is placed on concentration and richness of the fruit, the vineyard is run according to biodynamic priciples that exceed the European Standard.. Querciabella is a Chianti Classico DOCG that presently produces four wines from the vineyards of its Chianti Classico estate in Greve in Chianti. Batar is a blend of Chardonnay and Pinot Blanc; Chianti Classico; Camartina a blend of Sangiovese and Cabernet Sauvignon while Palafreno, a new release, is a blend of Merlot and Sangiovese. Great care is taken in producing this wine from the separate pressing, fermentation and elevage of the Pinot Blanc and Chardonnay grapes; through to the barrel maturation that takes 9 to 12 months in French oak, 50% new and 50% one year old, that comes mainly from Troncais and Vosges, as well as from Allier. The final blending takes place in stainless steel, the wine is then bottled shortly after, and rests for about six months before release. This blend of 65% Chardonnay and 35% Pinot Blanc is a pale yellow coloured wine with floral and herb aromas. Showing white fruit flavours, cream and a little minerality this is a rich sophisticated wine with an enjoyable finish. Additionally: Between 1988 and 1991 the wine used to be called Batard-Pinot, and it was a blend of Pinot Blanc and Pinot Gris. Between 1992 and 1994, the name was Batard , because Chardonnay had been added to the blend. Since 1995, the name has been changed to Batar, in order to avoid confusion with French AOCs of Burgundy whose name contains the word 'Batard' . Magnum bottles available in Original Wooden Case. (6 x 1.5 Litres)

Poggio Argentiera FINISTERRE Rosso Toscana IGT
Description: Gianpaolo Paglia, an agronomist born and bred in Maremma, and Justine Keeling, an English marketing manager, bought the estate in 1997. They started making Morellino di Scansano , with the existing 6 Ha of old and high quality producing vineyards, whilst at the same time planting new vineyards using local varieties such as Sangiovese and Alicante. Additionally, they also built an modern winery and warehousing in 2002. Poggio Argentiera has emerged as one of Scansano's best wineries and it is today composed of two estates situated in two different areas of Tuscany's Maremma, near the town of Grosseto. At Podere Adua there is the head office, cellar as well as the winery and it is close to the Maremma Natural Park, in the coastal region of Grosseto. The second estate, Podere Keeling, is found in the hilly area to the North of the Scansano district, towards Monte Amiata. Made from a 50/50 split of Alicante and Syrah, the wine was fermented completely in small, open French oak barrels aged more than three years. Malolactic fermentation and maturation in second and third use barrels , for between 16 and 18 months, followed by 8 months in bottle before release. Finisterre is an original Mediterranean blend with a strong personality. The two varieties, Alicante and Shiraz, show notes of liquorice, chocolate and olive oil tomatoes. This is wonderfully drinkable wine, with a bold structure, superb freshness and intriguing complexity. (6 x 75 cl)
