Azienda Il Grillesino RISERVA Morellino di Scansano
Description: The grapes for this wine come from the well exposed wooded hillsides located in the Grancia area, facing Poggio la Mozza. It is bordered to the west by the Grillese stream and the 'Grillesino' ditch, and hence the producers name. The grapes were destalked and softly pressed and vinified together in stainless steel vats. During the 20-day maceration there were repeated treadings to extract as many of the softest and most complex tannins as possible. At the end of the alcoholic fermentation at a maximum temperature of 30ºC, the wine was then put into new Allier and American oak barrels. The malolactic fermentation was complete at the beginning of the next spring and the wine was transferred carefully and poured into barrels until December. There was not any filtering carried out, only light binding and the wine was bottled in the same month. The wine is produced exclusively from Sangiovese grapes. The wine greatly benefits from the ageing allowing it to mellow in barriques. The result is an intense red coloured wine with cherry aromas in the nose and mouth. An aristocratic wine of great structure, supple and elegant, it has great balance between traditional fullness, body and refinement as well as a modern fruity taste and tannic softness. It is suitable for further ageing. (6 x 75 cl)

Azienda Agricola Sottimano FAUSONI Barbaresco DOCG
Description: The Sottimano family have worked hard to elevate their estate into the top echelon. Particular attention is given to the cultivation of the vineyards; in this way, through very low yields, it is possible to produce structured, full bodied wines, which can be aged for several years. Since 1990, the vines have undergone only natural treatments with no use of pesticides, artificial fertilizers or weedkillers; the traditional diseases that normally afflict the vineyards are treated using eco-friendly products. During the vinification no selected yeasts are employed, and the wines are bottled without filtration or fining. Fausoni is a very small, south west-facing vineyard of 1ha in Neive. It is so small in fact, that Sottimano is the only house making a Fausoni at the time of writing this review. In the winery the wine undergoes maceration on the skins in steel vats with temperature control for 6-7 days, malolactic fermentation in barriques and ageing in French oak barriques for 22 months. The Barbaresco 'Fausoni,' from 40-year old vines, is the most floral of Sottimano's offerings with aromas of cassis, currant and mint, and a firm core of vibrant acidity. Brilliant ruby red colour and nuances of garnet red, moderate transparency. The nose reveals intense, clean, pleasing, refined and elegant aromas that start with hints of cherry, plum and violet followed by aromas of liquorice, menthol, tobacco, vanilla, chocolate, cinnamon and mace. The mouth has good correspondence to the nose, a tannic attack and pleasing crispness, however balanced by alcohol, full body, intense flavours and good tannins. The finish is persistent with flavours of plum and cherry. (6 x 75 cl)

Azienda Agricola Zidarich CARSO TERRANO Carso Friuli
Description: Carso is a thin slice of land connecting Trieste to the main mass of Friuli-Venezia-Giulia. Officially speaking, this is Italy, but, as is the case all along Italy's border with Slovenia, the wine culture transcends national boundaries. Winegrowing Carso extends well beyond the border into Slovenia and is a limestone-rich plateau that extends out from the city of Trieste and reaches toward the Julian Alps to the north. The heavy limestone content of the soils likely gave the zone its name , and it lends the wines, both white and red, a firm acidic backbone and mouth-watering minerality. The Azienda Zidarich is located in Prepotto, near Duino Aurisina, which is a small and characteristic village of the Carso area. The landscape is extremely varied and stimulating. The vegetation of the environment is very different and enhances the peculiarity of this territory dedicated to viticulture. Jagged chalky rock is the keynote of Carso viticulture, which is carried out on small terraces of red, iron-rich soil that have been reclaimed from the woodland. This lends the wines the characteristic acidity and mineral notes. The Terrano is made with a variant of the Refosco grape grown in characteristic red soil. The peculiar quality of the sun and soil of the Carso area contribute to the wine's particular characteristics. (6 x 75 cl)

Poggio Argentiera LALICANTE Vino da Tavola Passito
Description: Gianpaolo Paglia, an agronomist born and bred in Maremma, and Justine Keeling, an English marketing manager, bought the estate in 1997. They started making Morellino di Scansano , with the existing 6 Ha of old and high quality producing vineyards, whilst at the same time planting new vineyards using local varieties such as Sangiovese and Alicante. Additionally, they also built an modern winery and warehousing in 2002. Poggio Argentiera has emerged as one of Scansano's best wineries and it is today composed of two estates situated in two different areas of Tuscany's Maremma, near the town of Grosseto. At Podere Adua there is the head office, cellar as well as the winery and it is close to the Maremma Natural Park, in the coastal region of Grosseto. The second estate, Podere Keeling, is found in the hilly area to the North of the Scansano district, towards Monte Amiata. From the winerys oldest vineyards this swwet Alicante is harvested at least 15 days later than that of normal grapes, at which point the grapes are transferred to a 'Fruttaio.' In this room, air circulates freely through boxes containing the grapes, while temperature and humidity never exceed 19°C and 50 % respectively. After drying a month in these conditions, the original weight of the grapes has been reduced by approximately 30%. Once out of the Fruttaio the grapes are transferred as they are, including stems, to small, open, oak barrels with natural yeasts and without temperature control. Punching down of the skins is done manually, and the fermentation is stopped by taking the temperature down to 5°C when the alcohol cont. is about 13,5 % and the sugar content 130 gr/L. The wine is then moved into second year barrels for about 4 months and bottled in 375 ml bottles after the fining process and a sterile filtration. The wine is 100% Alicante, a variety typical to many local vineyards, . Traditionally, these two grapes are blended to make Morellino di Scansano . Here, they have taken Alicante on its own and put it centre-stage, where it can show off notes of elderflower, sun-dried tomato, liquorice, chocolate and spices, finely woven tannins and a fascinating inky colour. Drink it with chocolate or strong cheese to discover its personality at its best. This is a very labour-intensive, hand-made wine and so very few bottles are made. Available in 37.5 cl Half Bottles. (12 x 37.5 cl)
