Avignonesi IL MARZOCCO Chardonnay Cortona DOC Montepulciano
Description: A blend of 85 % Chardonnay and 15% Sauvignon Blanc the grapes were hand picked, then destalked, crushed and pressed. The must was fermented in barriques of which 80% was new oak and 20% used oak. The wine was aged in barriques for 6 months, then in bottle for six months before release. Great care from the vineyard to the winery has produced a wine with a rich, biscuity nose characteristic of lightly oaked Chardonnay. Full-bodied and intense on the palate but not overwhelming, it has good length and attractive acidity. Avignonesi is one of the great names of Italian wine. Ettore and Alberto Falvo have, over the past 30 years, taken a small estate and built it into a paradigmatic producer that has put Montepulciano on the map. The modernisation that took place at Avignonesi in the 1970s and early 1980s abated somewhat towards the end of the latter decade, but new energy has once again been injected into the business by the next generation of Falvos. Avignonesi has four estates, two in Montepulciano and two in the DOC zone of Cortona, situated to the east of Montepulciano in the foothills of the Apennines. These estates have about 115 hectares of vineyard and have been the area of greatest focus for Avignonesi over the past decade. Ettore Falvo has translated his passion for alberello training into the new vineyards planted on their estates. New Sangiovese vineyards are planted at a density of 7500 vines per hectare and the modified alberello they are using ensures earlier ripening, which has given fuller, riper wines than Montepulciano was previously capable of producing. Brown Brothers Chardonnay Victoria Australia
Description: Chardonnay wines that have not been overly barrel fermented or wood matured have become extremely popular over the last few years. Oak maturation enhances the flavour and body of the palate but tends to disguise the varietal characteristics of a wine. This Chardonnay displays light oak flavours that enhance but do not overpower the true characteristics of the variety. It is an elegant, stylish wine of mid-yellow colour with a bouquet of restrained fig, some fruit kernel and oaky, nutty characters which follow through to the palate. It has beautiful flavour intensity, with a subtle, creamy, mouthfeel and good acid balance on the finish. It can be enjoyed young but will develop further complexity from medium-term cellaring. This delightful dry white wine makes the perfect partner for a wide variety of seafood dishes particularly if served with a beurre blanc or hollandaise sauce. It is also lovely with a potato and salmon frittata or fresh asparagus. (6 x 75 cl)

Sherwood Estate CLEARWATER VINEYARDS Chardonnay Waipara NZ
Description: Sherwood Estate is very much a family business, with Dayne and Jill Sherwood owning and operating it since the late 1980's. The winery is located in the picturesque Waipara Valley, while they have four vineyards also owned by Sherwood Estate in the famed Marlborough Region, at the top of the South Island. Based on nearly twenty years of growing grapes and making wine, Sherwood Estate now specialise in Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Riesling. Sherwood Estate produce three ranges of wines the Clearwater Range, the Sherwood Estate Range and the the Stratum Range. The Clearwater range represents the very best varietal single vineyard wines from Sherwood Estate's own vineyards in Waipara. This is very much a hand crafted range both in the vineyards and winery, here meticulous care is taken to ensure that the wine produced is of the highest quality and reflects each vineyard's unique characteristics or 'terroir'. The fruit was hand harvested from the West Melton vineyard and in the winery a gentle pressing was undertaken with the juice fermented and aged on lees in French oak barriques . Following a light fining and filtration the wine was bottled. Matured on the lees to give this wine its wonderful complexity and character, this Chardonnay displays richness and concentration of flavour. Tropical and stonefruit aromas are evident on the nose, while the palate is full and rounded with a long persistent finish. (12 x 75 cl)

Louis Latour GRAND ARDECHE Chardonnay Vin de Pays des Coteaux de l'Ardeche Blanc
Description: Consistency of climate and abundant sunshine in the Ardeche perfectly ripen these bunches of grapes, whilst the drying Mistral wind eliminates any risk of rot. The Grand Ardeche is treated as if it were grown in one of the Grand Cru vineyards of the Cote d'Or. Fully-ripened grapes are selected and pressed lightly before being aged in oak barrels made at the Latour cooperage in Beaune. The result is a full-bodied wine that is smooth with notes reminiscent of exotic fruits and vanilla spice imparted by the oak. Soil: Clay and chalk. Vinification: Traditional oak barrel ageing with 100% malolactic fermentation. Grand Ardeche 1998 tasted April 11th 2000: The rich lemon gold hue invites you to sniff the ripe open nose of fresh tropical and citrus fruit aromas with integrated smoky vanilla oak flavours. In the mouth, a warm creamy texture coats the mouth with layers of ripe fruit balanced by freshness and a long smooth finish. World Champion Sommelier 1995, Mr Tasaki Shinya strongly recommends Louis Latour's Grand Ardeche: 'The colour is pure lemon gold, with a warm viscous appearance. The nose is peachy with intense honeyed fruits and a toasty nutty oak complexity. On the palate it is rich and fruity with balanced acidity and a long fresh finish.' The Wine Magazine, April 1999 tasted the Grand Ardeche 1996: 87 points. 'Another wine from Louis Latour, from an equally classic Burgundian grape, Chardonnay. Nice soft fruity apple flavours. A pleasantly floral nose while the palate is almost sweet with a soft texture'. The Wine Enthusiast November 15, 1998 tasting Grand Ardeche 1996: 'Bright pale golden cast. Moderately full-bodied. Full acidity. Highly extracted. Moderately oaked. Vanilla, smoke, yeast. Quite aromatic, with a toasty oak accent and yeasty flavours throughout. Full and rich, yet crisp through the finish. 87 points'. Decanter October 1997 tasting Grand Ardeche 1995 recommended 'Vegetal, complex, voluptuous, honeyed and ripe on the nose. Rich, ripe and vegetal again on the palate with a little vanilla of new oak and backing acidity.' The famous French Guide Hachette reviews the Grand Ardeche 1996: 'Consistency and excellence. These two words define the quality of Chardonnay wine produced by Louis Latour in the Ardeche since the 1980's. Vinified and aged in oak barrels, this wine is a complex mixture of scented flowers, spice and even balsamic fragrances. Full and fruity in the mouth, this Coteaux de l'Ardeche is destined for great occasions.' (12 x 75 cl)

Stag's Leap Wine Cellars KARIA Chardonnay Napa Valley California
Description: Founded in 1972 by Warren and Barbara Winiarski, Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars produces wines it describes as ‘classical’. The now legendary 1976 Paris Tasting at which the 1973 Stag’s Leap Cabernet Sauvignon triumphed over the cream of Bordeaux, propelled the estate into the pre-eminent position it still retains today. The Napa Valley Chardonnay is a blend of fruit from the B.R.V. and Arcadia Estate Vineyards and from select vineyards in the cool Carneros district of Napa Valley. Fruit from the Arcadia Vineyard contributes crisp acidity and a mineral core, while B.R.V. adds richness. Fruit from the Carneros properties provides the tropical fruit and spiciness that the region is known for. The predominant impression given by the wine is that of deftness and balance, with bright acidity supporting ripe fruit flavours and subtle oak tones. The Napa Valley Chardonnay exhibits beguiling aromas of light toast, white flower blossoms, essence of gala apples, pear and apricots, interwoven with hints of lemon zest, vanilla and creme brulee. The aromas carry over on the palate with tones of white peach, lemon zest, lychee nut, pear and vanilla. The wine is refreshing, light and graceful on the palate, with creamy notes on entry and a crisp, well balanced mid-palate, finishing with excellent length, spiciness, balanced oak flavours and a hint of vanilla. (12 x 75 cl)
