''We are traditional,'' explains Joao Roseira. ''We ferment our own grapes from very good vineyards in 'lagars' so get better extraction. As a result, we have higher natural alcohols, which gives us a finer, more elegant style of Port, as we don't need to add so much brandy.'' This finesse carries through to the 10 Year Old Tawny, which is a classic of the style. Intense and liquoricey and long, it is a wonderful sipping Port. The Roseira family was the first Portuguese producers to strike out on their own in the 1978 vintage, and they have, over the past 23 years, evolved a wonderfully individual style of Port. Charming and velvety on the palate, the grace of the first contact is maintained by a complex sequence of ripe, dry fruit followed by a languorous finish.
