John Duval PLEXUS Barossa Valley South Australia
Description: The Plexus is a blend of 50% Shiraz, 34% Grenache and 16% Mourvedre. It is a vibrant, deep crimson red-purple colour, with a fragrant, spicy nose, combining a range of red fruits and subtle oak characters. On the palate, the wine is an attractive blend of red and black fruits with a variety of spices. The wine has ripe, fine tannins and good concentration which provide structure, length and a seamless balance. The Shiraz was sourced from old vines to the north of the valley, in the Stockwell, Light Pass, Ebenezer and Marananga regions. The Grenache was from 50-60 year old bushvines from Stockwell, Light Pass and the Rowland Flat regions. The Mourvedre was from bushvines, of which the oldest was more than 100 years old, growing in the Light Pass and Angaston regions. The aim of Plexus is to express the wide spectrum of red fruit flavours from Shiraz, Grenache and Mourvedre, but also to provide serious structure with a seamless balance and a long finish. A low percentage of new oak adds subtle complexity and allows the berry fruit flavours to shine through in the wine. John Duval was head winemaker at Penfolds until 2002, during which time he was the ‘custodian’ of Grange, a role he inherited from the great Max Schubert. After leaving Penfolds, John set out on his own with the 2003 vintage, sourcing fruit from some long-time friends in the Barossa. The Plexus is sealed under both cork and stelvin; allowing consumers the choice to eliminate the risk of cork taint. (6 x 75 cl) Price: £111.66

Description: Wine Description Deep purple crimson in colour. A sweet ripe spicy bouquet of raspberries, plums blackberries and anise with hints of mace, nutmeg and tar. A fleshy concentrated palate of sweet ripe black berry fruits with lush velvety mature tannins and a long finish. Grape Variety 65% grenache, 22% mourvèdre and 13% shiraz grapes from selected vineyards growing in the Barossa Valley. Background Named as a tribute to the early Barossa Lutheran pioneers, many of whom carried the nameJohann as their first name. Their toil, perseverance and conservatism in hardship has meant that the many generations that followed rejoiced in the riches of their prudent efforts. The grenache is just one of those blessings and has been appropriately named after Johann Alfred Zobel, whose 65-year-old vines, growing on the banks of the North Para, form the base of this wine. Barossa growers traditionally referred to their vineyard as their 'garden'. The traditions and culture have survived to this day including the winemaking techniques used in this grenache blend. It is produced from low-yielding, old, gnarled, dry-grown bushvines from selected vineyards. (6 x 75 cl) Price: £109.59

John Duval PLEXUS Barossa Valley South Australia
Description: A blend dominated by Shiraz with an almost even split of Grenache and Mourvedre. The Shiraz element is from an 80 year old vineyard in Nuniootpa planted in 1925 that gives the wine a lovely weight and depth while the Grenache off 50-60 year old bushvines in Roland Flat, and gives the wine great aromatics along with softness and richness on the palate. Finally, the Mourvedre from the Seppeltsfield region lends the wine a spicy character and good tannic structure. Once in the winery the wine was aged oak barrels for 15 months before release and this has produced a vibrant, deep crimson red-purple coloured wine showing a spicy nose, combining an array of red fruits and subtle oak. A flavoursome compote of red fruits, black fruits and a variety of spices are evident on the palate before giving way to ripe, fine tannins and good concentration that provide structure, length and a seamless balance.
