Description: The Pallavicini family have been in Lazio since the second half of the 17th Century, and as such their story is linked with that of the region in a range of agricultural activities. The vineyards are situated in the picturesque hills south of Rome and on the Mediterranean coast next to the Tuscan border. There are currently 78 ha under vine but, due to strong demand from abroad for the wines, expansion is currently taking place. The sites are meticulously matched to the grape varieties, which is a mix of both traditional and international varietals. Among the principle white varieties can be found: Trebbiano Toscano, Malvasia del Lazio, Malvasia di Candia, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Greco, Grechetto, Bonvino. While, the red cultivars include: Sangiovese, Cesanese, Merlot, Cabernet sauvignon, Montepulciano, Ciliegiolo and Petit Verdot. Today the traditions of the Pallavicini estate have been merged with the latest oenological practises ensuring the highest standard of wine production. The grapes are handled with great care as the 25 year old Sangiovese vines are managed to deliver reduced yields, undergo a prolonged maceration with the skins; and finally aged in cask. This care has produced an international styled wine, smooth with pretty berry and floral flavours leading to a velvety mouth feel while the tangy acidity keeps it fresh. (12 x 75 cl) Price: £88.35

Description: Voted Winery of the Year 2005 by the Gambero Rosso, Ama’s history goes back to 1972 when four Roman families united to purchase the Ama estate with the goal of restoring it to the splendour of its 18th century heyday. New cellars were built, new plantings began with experimentation into non-indigenous varietals, and new methods of viticulture were pursued while in 1982. Marco Pallanti was introduced as winemaker. In 1984 Castello di Ama decided to increase the area devoted to chardonnay, and planted 4 more hectares in the area known as 'Poggio.' The grapes, were hand-picked with 60% fermented in stainless steel tanks and the rest in oak barrels. This has produced an interesting blend of Chardonnay, Pinot Grigio and Malvasia showing apple, peach and honey character. Description: From one of the best producers, clean, fresh minerally white. This wine is a blend of Malvasia del Lazio, Malvasia di Candia, Trebbiano Toscano and a small percentage of Chardonnay. The fruit is from vineyards in cool North-facing sites at 300 – 400 m altitude in Monte Porzio Catone in the classic Frascati production area to the South of Rome. In the vineyard the soil has a volcanic origin rich in potassium, phosphorous and other micro elements. Though quick draining, this type of soil retains sufficient moisture to sustain the vine even in times of drought. The high concentration of minerals in the soil favours the production of top quality fruit. Once in the winery there is a very soft pressing while controlled fermentation of the free run juice is at cool temperatures . Then the wine is left to mature in stainless steel and bottled not before the first week of March following harvest. This has produced a pale straw coloured wine with green tints. Here the clean fruity nose with a steely overtones gives way to a crisp, fresh palate with ripe pear flavours and a clean tangy finish. (12 x 75 cl) Price: £59.88
