Description:
The 2002 vintage marks the sixteenth year of producing of our Riverstone Chardonnay, produced from our vineyards in the Arroyo Seco region in Monterey County. Each year, starting in 1995, J Lohr have incorporated higher percentages of traditional Burgundian production techniques into Riverstone, until the desired complexity was achieved . This includes more malo-lactic fermentation and sur lie ageing with lees stirring, which in turn creates a wine of greater complexity and nuance. The vines are grown primarily on Elder loam soils underlain by riverstones deposited over thousands of years from the Arroyo Seco river, allowing a four foot rooting zone that keeps the vine's vegetative growth and fruit in balance. Additionally, the cool climate and winds of the Salinas Valley extend the growing season and retain the natural grape acids and intense varietal character of the Chardonnay. Description: During September 2002, the Nimes area of southern France was absolutely deluged with rain, and the region suffered one of the worst floods in decades. The owner of Gournier, Maurice Barnouin, literally had to be helicoptered off the roof of his house to escape the torrential rain. His house, the adjoining winery, and most of the contents of his cellar, were carried down river. Since December 2002, Maurice Barnouin, the passionate owner of Gournier, has committed himself to the reconstruction of his life at Gournier, and has re-built a beautiful winemaking facility to receive the excellent 2003 harvest. Now owning over 200 ha of vineyards between Uzes and Nimes, the modern vinification methods and controlled yields ensure the consistency and personality of the range. This Vin de Pays by Gournier is 100% Chardonnay with a pale gold colour. Dominated by toasty oak flavours and a fleshy palate with a good concentration of fruit this is a great wine to savour. Description: The Eaglehawk Chardonnay is mid straw in colour with a vibrant youthful hue. The bouquet is typical of Australian chardonnay with tropical melon and peach characters and subtle oak integration. The palate is medium weight with rich fruit flavours and a backbone of supporting oak. The finish is crisp, dry and refreshing. Viticulture: Cool to mild weather leading up to the 2002 vintage produced ideal ripening conditions. 100% Chardonnay fruit was sourced from a range of vineyard sites in the premium wine growing regions of South Eastern Australia. Vinification: Following crushing, the wine was cool fermented to retain the fresh fruit flavours. Traditional winemaking techniques including stirring on yeast lees and malolactic fermentation were used on small parcels to further enhance these flavours and add a greater complexity and creamy mouthfeel. Description: Located in Erbusco, in the province of Lombardy, Ca'del Bosco is widely recognized as one of Italy's greatest wine estates. In 1968, Ca'del Bosco was founded on two hundred and thirty acres, and planted with chardonnay, pinot blanc and pinot noir, the traditional varietals of Franciacorta. After years of significant investment, technological improvements and the usual experience brought about by trial and error, Ca'del Bosco has won a reputation as one of the world's most prominent producers of not only fine sparkling wines, but also still wines. Description: In 1981 we planted some Chardonnay vines in a single vineyard of our estate in Treiso, replacing an old vineyard of Barbaresco. Since 1985 we produce with these Chardonnay grapes a limited quantity of barrel fermented Chardonnay called Piodilei. We wanted to keep the quantity of this wine very small and in the meantime we wish to give the chance to a wider number of consumers to enjoy our Chardonnay. In September 1993 we decided to ferment in stainless-steel tanks a part of our Chardonnay: the results was a fresh and vibrant wine with evident hints of ripe fruits. After some experiments we noted that adding to this wine a 25% of the same Chardonnay fermented and aged in new oak barrels, we reached an interesting wine spicy taste and persistent after-taste. Description: The Bourgogne Chardonnay is a blend of 50% barrel fermented Ladoix, with 30% coming from the grower in Puligny who supplies the grapes for the award winning Champ Gain. The fruit from Ladoix gives a richness to the wine, while that from Puligny gives a lovely minerality. The wine has an attractive clear yellow in colour with crystalline reflections, and has a very refined nose with notes of white flowers. It is round and delicate in the mouth, with a polished acidity which lends freshness and purity. Jean-Claude Boisset has undergone a radical transformation since 2002. Gregory Patriat, head winemaker, spends a great deal of his time in the vineyards, and pays the growers by the hectare, rather than by the tonnage, in order to ensure low yields.
