Vidal Estate Merlot Cabernet Sauvignon Hawke's Bay NZ
Description: Vidal Wines, founded in 1905, is one of Hawke's Bays oldest boutique wineries, and is a producer of premium quality wines that truly reflect the region and vineyards from which they were sourced. Vidal Wines gained its name from its founder, Anthony Joseph Vidal. He was 22 years old when he arrived in New Zealand from Spain in 1888. He moved North to Hawke's Bay where in 1905 he purchased a small property in Hastings. Once the stables that occupied the site were converted into a cellar, Anthony set about planting some grapevines. Thereafter, success lead to expansion with further vineyard plantings in Te Awanga and then Te Mata. Passing from family memebr to family member, the Vidal family made a decision to sell in the early 1970's and for a while the winery experienced some instability. This changed in 1976 when George Fistonich bought the winery and began to steadily restore the Vidal reputation as a quality wine producer. This Merlot Cabernet Sauvignon also has a small proportion of Malbec in the blend. Overall the wine has spicy plum and tobacco aromas which lead into a palate that shows rich Merlot and Malbec black plum and red berry-fruit characters. While young, the tannins will be firm and fine-grained but will soften over time. (6 x 75 cl)

Esk Valley RESERVE Merlot/Malbec/Cabernet Sauvignon Hawke's Bay NZ
Description: The growing season of the 2002 vintage was characterised by an early budburst after a mild winter, followed by a cool and damp summer until late February when an extended period of fine, hot weather took hold. This coupled with low yields in our vineyards provided the ideal conditions for a very successful red wine harvest. This wine is from two vineyard sites within the Gimblett Gravels Winegrowing District. These vineyards were planted in 1990 and 1992 respectively, and show a consistency of flavour and tannin development expected from older vines. They are spur pruned on a standard vertical trellis system and cropped at extremely low levels to ensure maximum quality. The grapes for this wine were destemmed and crushed to our 70 year old open topped concrete fermenters and inoculated with selected red wine yeast strains. Once active, the ferments were plunged six hourly by hand to ensure a complete and gentle extraction of colour and tannin. When fermentation was complete the new wines were pressed to tank and barrel and underwent malolactic fermentation. The wines were then aged in French oak barriques for 21 months before egg white fining and bottling. This is consistently one of New Zealand's top red wines and this vintage is no exception. The wine is black in colour with aromas and flavours of black fruits and chocolate. It is generous in flavour and mouthfeel, and possesses high tannin levels due to the ripeness of grapes at harvest, and vine maturity. The wine will benefit from time in the cellar and is amongst the best wines yet from this Estate. (6 x 75 cl)

Altos las Hormigas Mendoza Malbec Argentina
Description: Showing excellent depth of colour, this Malbec has youthful, almost floral perfumes which give way to fresh, chunky fruit characters with flavours of red berries and liquorice. Soft, rounded tannins balance and add depth to the juicy fruit. It has good length, with lingering chocolate and liquorice on the finish. The grapes for this wine are a blend of those grown on the Altos estate with those bought in from contracted grape growers in la Consulta, Vista Flores and Eugenio Bustos, in the Valle de Uco area as well as growers from Perdriel and Vistalba, districts in Luján de Cuyo. The vineyards in La Consulta, Vistalba and Perdriel are situated at 900-1000 metres above sea level. Some of the vines are 80 years old. The climate here is semi-desert, with hot days and cool nights, which help the aromatic development of the grapes. Alberto Antonini and his Tuscan friend, Antonio Morescalchi were so impressed with the vineyards in the area following their first trip to Argentina in 1995, that they persuaded a few friends to join them and bought this estate. Situated in Lujan de Cuyo, one of Mendoza’s premier growing areas, facing the Andes to the east, this property covers 216 hectares, of which 40 were planted between 1996 and 1999. They also buy in grapes, primarily from La Consulta . (12 x 75 cl)

Mount Riley SEVENTEEN VALLEY Chardonnay Marlborough NZ
Description: At the northern tip of New Zealand's South Island, the waters of the Marlborough Sounds meet steep hills rising to the south-west. Their peaks are the Richmond Ranges, dominated by the distinctive crag of Mount Riley. Inland, the mountains look down on the stony-soiled vineyards of the Wairau Valley. From here, and other famous parts of the Marlborough region, a reputation for outstanding wines has spread around the world. Distinct regional characteristics have been celebrated and Mount Riley Wines owners John Buchanan and Steve Hotchin aim is to produce premium quality wines that are as unmistakably part of Marlborough as Mount Riley itself. Mount Riley has five vineyards, totaling 252.5 acres of the Wairau Valley and Seventeen Valley areas. The 34 acre Seventeen Valley vineyard was established 1996, and Mount Riley's pioneering nature took it to this relatively new area, five minutes south of Blenheim and away from the Wairau Valley. The Seventeen Valley Vineyard has a unique mesoclimate, with soil that is extremely stony and of low fertility. All of which make it perfect for the production of high quality, intensely flavoured Pinot Noir, Merlot, Malbec and Chardonnay. Seventeen Valley is Mount Riley's premium Chardonnay and is produced from carefully selected parcels of exceptional grapes from several vineyards throughout the Wairau valley. The winemaker has fermented this wine in French barriques carefully selecting only the finest for this wine. This Chardonnay exhibits attractive melon and tropical fruit flavours overlaid with a nutty complexity from extended lees maturation. Mouthfilling and packed with flavour it has a great finish. Bremerton RACY ROSE Shiraz Cabernet Langhorne Creek South Australia
Description: The Bremerton story began in 1985 when Craig and Mignonne Willson purchased the property and established a long term restoration and development plan. The winery was established in 1988 and now has 110 acres planted at Langhorne Creek and is joint owner and manager of another 180 acres from which it selects the best fruit each year for its wines. Best quality practices ensure best quality grapes and the Bremerton vineyards predominantly grow Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz and Merlot, with small plantings of Sauvignon Blanc, Verdelho, Chardonnay, Malbec and Petit Verdot. The winemaking team headed by family member and winemaker Rebecca Willson has taken the quality of the wines to new standards. Rebecca seeks the best possible fruit from the Bremerton Estate and other specialised Langhorne Creek vineyards to craft traditional, full bodied, full flavoured, mouth filling Langhorne Creek wines that show a consistency of style whilst encouraging the true varietal grape characteristics to be expressed. The winery has invested heavily in a premium French & Amercian oak program using 220 litre barriques to ensure subtle and complementary oak influences. The winery utilises tradtional open top fermenters, made from stainless steel and a purpose built barrel cellar for maturation. New laboratory and tasting facilities have also been added to the winery. The best parcels of Shiraz had some of their juice drained off when the extraction colour was perfect, the juice was then cooled, settled and racked. A yeast was chosen that would enhance the natural characters of the berry and the ferment was treated just like a delicate white. The wine was then stabilised, filtered and bottled. This is the third vintage of Racy Rose, produced from 100% estate grown fruit. The philosophy behind this rose is to produce a wine that is easy drinking. The colour is bright and vibrant with a nose that shows wonderfully lifted crushed strawberry and watermelon characteristics. As the name suggests the palate is vibrant and racy with sweet cherry while the finish is dryer than most rose's, flavorsome and refreshing. (12 x 75 cl)
