Description: The Pinot Noir on the palate has rich cherry stone with delicate spices and ripe plum characters that emerge in the glass. Fine tannins run evenly across a full palate. A very low yielding vintage and a wonderfully warm early summer has delivered a dense, structured, deeply sumptuous, velvet-textured Pinot Noir with great density. This is a serious, cellar worthy Pinot. AtaRangi is run by Clive Patton and his wife Phyll, Clive’s sister Alison and her winemaker husband Oliver Masters. They style themselves as the AtaRangi Four, bound by a shared enthusiasm for Pinot Noir and a passion for quality. This passion is evident in their wines, in particular their Pinot Noir, which is consistently ranked as one of New Zealand’s best. The AtaRangi vineyards are situated in Wairarapa, just south of Wellington. As if making a mosaic, each year winemaker Jacques Lardiere selects individual 'climat' parcels, which can have village or even 1er Cru appellations. He combines these to make what he believes to be a greater whole. The final blend typifies the best of Burgundy from that vintage. Description: The Valpolicella Ripasso is made with 60% Corvina Veronese, 35% Rondinella, and 5% Molinara in the traditional Ripasso technique. The young Valpolicella, made in October, undergoes a second fermentation in November together with grapes that have been lightly dried for two months. This process adds colour, alcohol and depth of flavour to the finished wine. The 2006 has fresh, ripe plums and red cherries fruit with hints of cinnamon and nutmeg on the palate, and is lingering and intense on the finish.
