DFJ Vinhos FONTE DO BECO Terras do Sado Pamela Portugal
Description: The Palmela region is on the Setubal Peninsular south of Lisbon. Long hours of grape ripening sunshine balanced by cool, humid, maritime air mean the region has ideal conditions for the vine. It is famous for its superb, robust red wines. Made from 100% Castelão , one of Portugal's best native varieties this wine has been developed by José Neiva the leading oenologist of this important wine region. He has chosen to put his name to this wine after making a selection of prime quality grapes from the huge harvest at his disposal. The wine was produced using the Traditional method, but the grape varieties are vinified separately. Ripening of grapes in the extensive vineyards is closely monitored. A selection was made of the very best fruit from the most mature vines and this was harvested exclusively by hand. After destalking the grapes are crushed with an extremely gentle roller system. Selected extraction enzymes and yeasts are used. The wine was fermented gently over a long period in order to extract maximum flavour whilst preserving primary aromatics. For further extraction the wine is left to macerate with the skins for 30 days after fermentation. It was bottled after a 3 month period of oak ageing. With an excellent intense ruby colour this wine is full of character and flavour. The palate shows delicious ripe but mature fruit with distinctive forest fruit aromas and a hint of oak-spice. It is has smooth, full body with a good firm structure and a very persistent, dry finish. (12 x 75 cl) Price: £91.41

Bodegas Osborne Rare Old Soleras Oloroso SOLERA INDIA Sherry
Description: The black bull silhouette of Osborne's trade mark is as much a symbol of Spain as it is of the major drinks group which began in Puerto de Santa Maria in the 18th century. Today, descendants of Thomas Osborne, a native of Exeter, still control the firm. Osborne began as a sherry house and it still boasts a near unrivalled range of wines. The flagship brand "Fino Quinta" is bottled under nitrogen and screw-capped to preserve its freshness; the rare fino-amontillado "Coquinero" is fuller bodied; Bailen is a true Oloroso, pungent and dry. The ultimate expression of sherry lies in the great solera wines. These are very old sherries drawn off in minute quantities from individual soleras: they are fabulous wines by any standard, winning gold medals whenever they are entered in shows, competitions or challenges. Only few houses successfully combine being both a Sherry and Port shippers. Osborne have been Port producers and shippers for nearly forty years; they bring the same concern for quality and authenticity (6 x 75 cl) Price: £504.62

Quinta da Franqueira BRANCO Vinho Verde DOC Portugal
Description: The Franciscan monks were drawn to the site of this vineyard by the ancient spring of the 'Fonte da Vida' famous for it's healing powers since 1493. Through the ages there has been great change and the Quinta do Convento da Franqueira was built in the 1560's using stones taken from the nearby ruined castle of Faria, stronghold in the 14th century of Nuno Goncalves, a portuguese hero. More recently in 1965 it was bought by an englishman, Brian Gallie who set about with enthusiasm to restore the, by then, dilapidated building. A talented draughtsman, he left such detailed drawings that today his son Piers is continuing the work that has turned Franqueira into a haven of timeless peace and subtle beauty. Today, the six hectare vineyard and modern winery produces the refreshing vinho verde 'Quinta da Franqueira' and Piers Gallie is always pleased to show guests round and explain how the wine is made. He uses the Trajadura and Loureiro grapes to produce a light, soft floral wine showing fresh green apple. (12 x 75 cl) Price: £78.92
