Yalumba HAND PICKED Shiraz Viognier Barossa Valley South Australia
Description: The concept of blending Shiraz and Viognier is not new. It is derived from the great French wine region of Northern Rhone, in particular, the Cote Rotie area. Cote Rotie has often been described as one of France's finest and most perfumed red wines. W I N E S T Y L E Yalumba Hand Picked Shiraz + Viognier 1999 is deep cherry red in colour with purple hues. Lifted floral aromatics surround ripe fleshy plums, chocolate and dried fruits. On the palate, fine tannins support the intense flavours of ripe cherries, liquorice, anise and violets. This wine can be enjoyed now, but will benefit from medium term cellaring. The addition of Viognier to Shiraz intensifies the colour, adds an extra dimension and a wonderful fragrance to the bouquet, and brings softness to the rich and powerful Barossa Shiraz. This rare blend from Yalumba of 87% Shiraz and 13% Viognier is 100% Barossa, with the majority of the fruit sourced from the Eden Valley. (6 x 75 cl) Price: £95.72

Redbank FIGHTING FLAT Shiraz King Valley Victoria
Description: Low yields and a long cool ripening period in the King Valley during the summer of 1999, resulted in wines of great intensity and fruit character. Vibrant purple and red in colour, the 1999 Fighting Flat Shiraz has intense raspberry, clove and eucalypt fruit characters with a hint of chocolate and spice from 18 months French oak maturation. Raspberry, spices and plums add a sweet texture to the medium- to full-bodied palate. Integrated French oak contributes cedar and chocolate flavours and enhances the tight structure and long, gently tannic finish. This is a wine that will reward those with patience, however, for those who cannot wait, it is a perfect accompaniment to lamb shanks or mushroom risotto. (6 x 75 cl) Price: £61.25

Simonsig Shiraz Stellenbosch RSA
Description: 17 months in small oak and about 35% in big wood. Small oak, mostly French with 11% American oak. Very light egg white fining before bottling. The oldest Shiraz vineyards on the Estate were planted in 1973 and the yields are sometimes as low as 4 tons per hectare. In 1993 a new planting program was started for Shiraz and only the best available clones were planted. These clones are all virus free and come from South Africa, France and Argentina. The new clones ripen earlier with high sugar levels and an abundance of colour. The yields are also higher and a green harvest was done just prior to veraison. Garnet red colour. The nose shows pepper and fynbos or dried protea flavours with toasty vanilla oak sweetness. Spicy complexity with lively fruit lies gently on the palate and a soft tannin structure rounds of this medium bodied Shiraz. Silver award at the 1999 Veritas Awards. www.simonsig.co.za (12 x 75 cl) Price: £120.75
