Botalcura EL DELIRIO Merlot Chile
Description: Vina Botalcura is the result of the passion of two men. Chilean partner, Juan Fernando Waidele, was seduced by the charm of the town of Botalcura and its environs, and this is where the idea to build a winery started. Juan Fernando then met enologist Philippe Debrus, who had a strong desire to return to a hands-on approach to winemaking, a style he learned in his native France when he was young. The winery is named after the town it is based in, Botalcura, near Talca, about 3 hours south of Santiago, in the coastal mountain range that forms the Maule Valley. Additionally, the word Botalcura means Large Stone in Mapundungun, the language of the Mapuche people of southern Chile. To complement the fruit grown on the company's own vineyards, grapes are sourced from the best areas of Chile, selecting those that fully express the intense, particular characteristics of the soils and climates from which they originate. Here great care is taken from hand picking the grapes only in the morning hours to keep fruit cool in the vine yard into the winery where 30% of the wine is aged six months in one and two year-old oak barrels before being bottled. A red ruby coloured wine with dark reflects and aomas of intense blackberry, plum, vanilla, nutmeg and oak. Gentle on the front palate, opening to full fruit flavours in the mouth-filling middle this wine is showing intense and well-integrated tannins that lend a solid structure, in harmony with the acidity. Medium-bodied and long on the finish this is a wine to savour. (12 x 75 cl)

Robert Mondavi Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley California
Description: At 90 years of age, Robert Mondavi remains the global emissary for these wine. His vision was to create wines in California that belong in the company of the great wines of the world. Robert Mondavi is known for producing hand-crafted wines of distinct style. Representing the best of California wine growing regions, including the legendary Napa Valley, each of the wines offers unique qualities and characteristics. Robert Mondavi Winery is located in the heart of Napa Valley, California. The first major winery built in Napa Valley in the post-Prohibition era, Robert Mondavi Winery helped establish the foundation for the modern-day California wine business. Its mission-style architecture, with the expansive archway and bell tower designed by Cliff May, has become an enduring landmark that evokes California's winemaking history. Mondavi selected the majority of the grapes from the center of Napa Valley, a region well known for producing intensely flavoured Cabernet family grape varieties. The balance of sunny days and cool, foggy nights in Napa Valley is perfect for developing complex, ripe flavours and supple tannins in Cabernet Sauvignon. A range of soils-from alluvial to lean volcanic-contributes to the diverse flavours in this wine. Mondavi chose 35% of the grapes from the Oakville AVA, including 33% from Robert Mondavi To Kalon Vineyard, and 22% from the Stags Leap District AVA, including 7% from Robert Mondavi Wappo Hill Vineyard. The balance of the grapes came from the Rutherford AVA and other Napa Valley vineyards. Ripe dark berry, spice, violet and chocolate weave through the aromas and smooth, velvety flavours of this Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon. These rich, expressive flavours come from the soils and climates of vineyards located primarily in the geographic center of Napa Valley. Firm tannins support the abundant fruit character and give the wine excellent length on the palate. Fermentation with both cultured and native yeast strains gives layers of nuance to the wine, and extended skin contact intensifies varietal complexity and softens tannins. Finally, Mondavi aged the wine in French oak chateau barrels for over 18 months to enhance the lush texture and add spicy oak accents to this wine. (12 x 75 cl)

W & J Graham's 1980 Vintage Port
Description: Vintage Ports are only made on very exceptional years . The principal determining factor is the weather in the vineyards which must be ideal throughout the viticultural season and subsequently during the harvest. Only a few exceptional vineyards in the Upper Douro region produce wines of sufficient body and style to make a true Vintage Port. After the harvest, wines of Vintage potential are put into oak barrels called 'pipes'. Some eighteen months later a careful and painstaking series of tastings is held to judge exactly which wines of different vineyards merit inclusion in the final blend. If the ideal blend is achieved, the wine is then bottled without any filtration whatsoever approximately 24 months after the original harvest . Vintage Port must then be matured for some ten to twenty years in cool dark cellars as it gradually achieves the outstanding style of a great wine. The bottles should always be stored lying down. Vintage Ports deposit a heavy sediment or 'crust' in the bottle while maturing and must be decanted prior to serving. A very few Port companies, through having consistently produced great Vintage Ports over many years, enjoy outstanding reputations. Graham's is universally acknowledged to be a leader in this field. Gallo Family Vineyards ESTATE Chardonnay Northern Sonoma California
Description: After the repeal of Prohibition in 1933, Ernest & Julio Gallo started their winery in California. Unable to obtain bank loans, they rented a warehouse and bought equipment on credit. More than sixty years later, the Gallo family still controls one of the world's most successful wine companies. The Gallo philosophy of continual improvement saw Julio Gallo travelling throughout California seeking high quality grapes and vineyards; he came to the conclusion that Sonoma County has the finest growing area in California. Its complex geography provides an endless variety of growing conditions, and eleven viticultural appellations have been established in Sonoma. Grapes from Estate vineyard blocks located in Sonoma County's Russian River Valley were used for this wine. Gallo has achieved a worldwide reputation for producing Chardonnay grapes full of character and concentrated varietal flavour here. Sometimes referred to as a cool climate growing region, the Russian River Valley benefits from its proximity to the nearby Pacific Ocean. Warm daytime temperatures routinely cool down at night as a result of marine fog intrusion. Such a weather phenomena slows the ripening process, allowing the grapes more time to deepen and develop character. The soil found at Laguna Ranch also plays an important role. Known as 'Sebastopol' series, it represents a mixture of gravelly and sandy loam ideal for growing world-class Chardonnay grapes. Winemaking has been a tradition in the Gallo family for almost 70 years and the Estate bottled range is one of their flagship wines. All grapes were harvested by hand and whole cluster pressed in the winery. New French oak barrels were used to age sur lies for 11 months while being stirred every 2 to 3 weeks. The vintage distinguishes itself by being powerful, focused and elegant all at the same time. With layer after layer of flavour and beautifully integrated textures, it is nothing short of extraordinary, a winning combination of New World fruit and Old World craftsmanship. (6 x 75 cl)

Robert Mondavi Cabernet Sauvignon Oakville California
All of the grapes for this wine were grown in the world-renowned Oakville region surrounding our winery. Designated an American Viticultural Area in 1993, Oakville is distinguished by an alluvial fan extending from the base of the Mayacamas Mountains that form the valley's western border. The Oakville bench, which lies against the hills, has well-drained soils that allow deep rooting and the development of complex flavours in the grapes. Mondavi selected all Oakville bench vineyards for this wine, including 82% from Robert Mondavi's historic To Kalon Vineyard. Mondavihand-harvested the grapes into 40-lb. boxes during the cool morning hours. The clusters were then hand-sorted on tables in the To Kalon fermentation cellar for optimum quality. The grapes were destemmed and lightly crushed directly into a new 17-ton oak fermentation tank. The must was fermented with a combination of native and cultured yeast for layers of complexity, and follwed this with 24.5 days of skin contact to soften tannins. After the free-run wine was drained off the pomace, the drop-gate was opened to gravity-convey the pomace to a gentle basket press. The wine was then gravity-fed to barrels to undergo malolactic fermentation and ageing. To achieve natural clarity, the wine was racked three times during 16 months of ageing in traditional French oak chateau barrels . The wine was then bottled without fining or filtration. The ripe, sweet fruit character of the Cabernet Sauvignon exudes creme de cassis and juicy blackberry character. Complex nuances of spices, vanilla, minerals and cedar weave through the lush fruit flavours culminating in a long finish. (6 x 75 cl)
