David Powell discovered some land in 1992 that had old Shiraz vines growing on it that were almost dead. After nursing them back to health he secured a contract to supply the grapes to a local grower. After realising that this hobby could be made into a business he decided to go full time. In 1994 he founded the company and named it Torbreck after a forrest in Scotland where he had worked as a lumberjack. The Struie sources fruit from the high altitudes of Eden Valley imparting delicate spice, white pepper and fruit characters. While the Barossa component displays a richer, deeper, more brooding flavour and intensity. The combined structure will reward extended cellaring.A 'modern classic' 'The view from the Struie down across the Dornoch Firth is as inspiring as that of the Valley floor from the Barossa Ranges. This wine is a blend of Shiraz from the Eden and Barossa Valleys, combining the best of both regions'. David Powell Varietal : 100 percent Shiraz Regions : Eden Valley and Barossa Valley . Torbreck RUN RIG Shiraz Viognier Barossa Valley
Description: David Powell discovered some land in 1992 that had old Shiraz vines growing on it that were almost dead. After nursing them back to health he secured a contract to supply the grapes to a local grower. After realising that this hobby could be made into a business he decided to go full time. In 1994 he founded the company and named it Torbreck after a forrest in Scotland where he had worked as a lumberjack. Torbreck's flagship wine, RunRig is named after the Scottish Highland clans system to distribute land amongst its clansmen in a series of widely dispersed holdings or 'Runrig'. Great care is taken from the vineyard where the vines are over 100 years old to the winery, where the Shiraz cuvee spends 30 months in 60 percent new French Oak . The 3 percent estate grown Viognier is also fermented and aged for 6 months in barrel and then added to the blend just prior to bottling. This is a structured, muscular Shiraz blended with a little Viognier that is showing phenomenal density, dry vintage port-like concentration, and magnificent notes of smoke, blackberries, cassis, leather and coffee. A hint of viognier's sweet marmalade character comes through as the wine sits in the glass. Limited Availability. (6 x 75 cl)

David Franz RED ROSE Shiraz Barossa Valley South Australia
Description: Pronounced as in the flower the Red Rose this wines history started back in the late 1800's when the Stonewall vineyard was first conceived. Back then you couldn't just pop down to the local production nursery, order 50,000 vine rootlings and whack them into the ground. It wasn't even known what varieties would flourish. The best way to find out was to plant a wide variety of vines, see which did well, then propogate and plant out from these base stocks. The end result 100 or so years later is the original nursery block, full of different vines on a patch of dry ground. This mixture of vines was a difficult to pick and separate because of the hodge-podge mix of old fashioned white and premium red varieties. Finally in 2002 the penny dropped for David Franz, rather than trying to pick all the little bits and pieces separately and add them to the larger lots from the rest of the vineyards, he decided to mix the lot together and see result. As soon as all the conditions were right this old block was picked, crushed and cold macerated the must for 5 days before basket pressing, cold settling and clarifying the juice. The clears were cold fermented over three weeks to dryness, then sat on yeast lees for about a month. The resultant wine was crisp and gutsy! To bring out the voluptuous fruit flavours a small portion of clarified juice, previously frozen was added back. The only option was to bottle under Stelvin closure to ensure every ounce of vibrancy would be retained. (6 x 75 cl)

Horse Mountain Shiraz Voor-Paardeberg Paarl RSA
Description: Horse Mountain Wines embody a new spirit of adventure in winemaking in the Cape with a fresh, entrepreneurial approach, unfettered by conventional tradition but rooted in the tried and tested philosophy that fine wine is made in the vineyard. These wines come from a former dairy farm on the slopes of the Paardeberg mountain between Paarl and Wellington. The 217ha property was acquired in 1997 after its potential as a suitable terroir for quality wine production had been identified. Since then, energetic owner Craig Lardner, a former property developer with a new-found passion for winemaking, and innovative consultant viticulturist Paul Wallace, have systematically selected nearly 50ha of the 150ha of viticulturally viable ground for painstaking preparation and careful cultivation to five grape varieties. The grapes grown include Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz that flourish on the high-lying, high-potential Vilefontes soils. While the Merlot and Pinotage have settled in the lower-lying, rich red Swartland/Glenrosa soils and Cabernet Franc does well in the similarly low-altitude Estcourt soils. Such significant variations in soil comnbined with an exceptional climate compared with conditions in the surrounding Paarl wine growing district, earned this new viticultural pocket its own 'ward' status in 2003. Horse Mountain wines thus proudly bear the designation Wine of Origin Voor-Paardeberg on their labels. The fruit came from single block of four-year-old vines planted in rich red, well-drained Vilefontes soil types on south east slopes of Far Horizons Wine Estate in Voor Paardeberg, Paarl about 50km north of Cape Town. The 12 hectares are trellised on the progressive Australian VSP trellising system resulting in the intense fruit being grown on the vine. Made for Horse Mountain Wines by winemaker Charles Stassen, the wine underwent ageing in new French and American oak barrels for 9 months. Full of fruit, this is a big styled shiraz reflecting the intense fruit from the Voor Paardeberg ward within Paarl. A deep, complex, intriguing wine already approachable but with French and 20% American oak ageing will also show wonderfully in years to come. (6 x 75 cl)

Yalumba THE OCTAVIOUS Old Vine Shiraz Barossa Valley
Description: Yalumba 'The Octavius' has established a reputation as one of Australia's icon Shiraz wines, an amazing feat considering the first release was the 1990 vintage. Yalumba's The Octavius was once again sourced from dry grown old bushvines that produced low crops of intensely rich and powerful Shiraz fruit. The resulting wine is dense red in colour with a complex nose of spice, pepper, fruitcake, coffee bean, violet and vanillin toasty oak. The palate is truly intense with concentrated layers of plum, licorice and black olives balanced by fine-grained tannins. This wine will see through to the long term and has at least 10 years of cellaring potential. In addition to being sourced from a number of very old vineyards in the Barossa, The Octavius is matured in American oak 'octaves' of only 90 litres capacity. It is the only red wine in the world that is matured in such small barrels. The secret of the wine not becoming overpowered by the oak, is that the oak used is seasoned at Yalumba for eight years before the octaves are crafted. Yalumba is one of a select few wineries in the world who boast their own coopers practising the ancient craft of barrel making. (6 x 75 cl)

Woodstock Winery & Coterie THE STOCKS Shiraz McLaren Vale SA
Description: The century old vines yield modest, ripe crops packed with intense richness and leathery flavours. Wine for the The Stocks is given the best treatment. Picked at optimum ripeness, fermented in small vessels and in new oak, and carefully monitored through winemaking. Only the best barrels are chosen for this flagship red wine from Woodstock. The Stocks Shiraz usually benefits from breathing before serving, both as a young wine and after cellaring. Breathing will enhance colour and fruit characters of a younger wine. The Stocks Shiraz wines have enough flavour and natural preservatives to cellar well for up to twelve years. The enjoyable fruit and oak flavours start to mingle and evolve secondary flavours after six years of careful cellaring. As a mature wine, the bottle should be stood for an hour or two after selection from the cellar, before carefully decanting to remove any sediment that deposits with age. Breathing after decanting will help the older wine focus its individual character and to show its best. This may sound like a hassle, but it can certainly be worth the effort. (4 x 1.5 Litres)

Torbreck THE STEADING Oaked Grenache Shiraz Mataro Barossa Valley
Description: If any one wine we produce most exemplifies what Torbreck is, then it is this wine, our ode to the great old vines, planted at the turn of last century, that survived the vine-pull scheme of the 1980s. Thankfully there are still many great vineyards remaining that are planted to Grenache, Mataro and Shiraz , the traditional Barossa varieties. From cuttings brought back from James Busby's 1831-2 trip to France and Spain and planted on their own roots these vineyards are some of the most precious in the world. Share-farming agreements with the Barossa' s best growers has enabled us to gain access to these vineyards among the precious in the world. Share-farming agreements with the Barossa' s best growers has enabled us to gain access to these vineyards and their fruit each season. From there we crush, ferment, gently press and mature the wine in seasoned oak casks for 18 months before bottling without filtration. Most importantly, there are about 45 different parcels of fruit that compose The Steading which are all fermented and matured separately , being brought together only at blending where their individuality is assessed prior to the composition of the final blend. The Steading is the reference point for Grenache dominant blends produced in the Barossa Valley and is made for the dining table. (12 x 75 cl)

McWilliams STENTIFORD'S RESERVE Old Vines Shiraz Coonawarra South Australia
Description: Colour: Rich damson. Bouquet: Complex and intense with spice, plum and mulberry fruit characters, rich dusty cedar and cinnamon oak aromas. Dark chocolate and marzipan, derived from barrel maturation and bottle-age, are also evident. Palate: Rich and full-bodied with layers of ripe plum, spice and blackcurrant fruit flavours over spicy cinnamon, cedar oak and smooth dark chocolate. The wine finishes long and dry, with fine-grained dusty tannins. Cellaring: This wine is enjoyable now, but will benefit from five to ten years careful cellaring. Decant before serving. Winemaker Notes: After crushing, the must was transferred to headed-down fermentation tanks for the initiation of fermentation. To assist extraction of colour and flavour, the juice was pumped over three times daily for seven days. The juice was drained from the tank and the skins pressed, prior to transfer to 100 per cent new French hogsheads to complete primary and malolactic fermentation. Following fermentation, the wine was racked and then transferred to new oak hogsheads , where it was matured for 26 months. The Fruit: This super-premium Shiraz is sourced entirely from the original, 100-year-old vines on the acclaimed Laira Vineyard, and is named after Captain Stentiford, the English sea captain who established the vineyard in 1893. The grapes were harvested at the end of April . (6 x 75 cl)
