Cline Cellars Syrah Los Carneros California
Description: At the turn of the 20th century, Oakley was home to a number of Portuguese and Italian immigrants who found many similarities to the Mediterranean climate they had left behind. They planted thousands of acres of orchards and vineyards. Today, a century later, due to the devastation of phylloxera and the encroachment of commercial and residential development, only 600 acres of vineyards remain in this evolving community. Cline Cellars owns and controls 300 of those acres including some of the oldest surviving vines in California. Cline Cellars began when Fred Cline's maternal grandfather, Valeriano Jacuzzi lived in Oakley and inspired him to go on to to U.C. Davis to study agriculture management. After attaining his degree in 1982, Fred returned to Oakley and founded Cline Cellars. There he started producing wines and restoring his grandfather’s ancient vines: today the Zinfandel, Carignane and Mourvedre produced from these vines are some of the most unique and historic wines made in California. In 1991, the winery relocated from Oakley to the Carneros region of Sonoma County. Here Fred pioneered the planting of Rhone varietals including Syrah, Viognier, Marsanne and Roussanne. The grapes come from Los Carneros where the chilly fogs and the steep, north-facing slope of hillside vineyard offer a particularly cool climate for ripening Syrah, lending the wines a pronounced, bright cherry and cracked pepper character. Well-drained, rocky loam soils force the vines to struggle and keep yields extremely low, further concentrating fruit character. Syrah is the grape that demonstrates its greatest potential for grandeur in the Northern Rhone appellations of Cote-Rotie and Hermitage. It exhibits many of the same brilliant fruit and smoky/tarry characteristics in Carneros. This wine has spent 14 months in oak to produce a ripe fruit flavoured wine with medium-weight tannins and long complex finish. (12 x 75 cl)

In 1991, the winery relocated from Oakley to the Carneros region of Sonoma County. Here Fred pioneered the planting of Rhone varietals including Syrah, Viognier, Marsanne and Roussanne. This bright blend is made from four grape varieties: Sauvignon Blanc 55%, Pinot Grigio 25%, Viognier 10% and Chardonnay 10%. The grapes come from the Central Coast, Sonoma County, Contra Costa County and Sacramento County. The Central Coast Chardonnay is grown in soil that is deep and rich and cooling breezes allow it to retain its acid and develop a lovely citrus character. The Sauvignon Blanc is from the Oakley Vineyards and Sonoma vineyards which contributes the gooseberry character. The Pinot Grigio and Viognier vineyards are planted in the sun-drenched vineyards of California’s Sacramento Valley and are watered using 'deficit irrigation' to intensify the grape flavours while they contribute a melon and herbal notes. No oak or malolactic fermentation was used in this blend and as a result this pale yellow coloured wine is bright and fresh exhibiting grapefruit, gooseberry and orange flavours. (12 x 75 cl)

In 1991, the winery relocated from Oakley to the Carneros region of Sonoma County. Here Fred pioneered the planting of Rhone varietals including Syrah, Viognier, Marsanne and Roussanne. This red is a blend of 37% Syrah, 27% Petite Sirah, 23% Cabernet Franc and the balance is Grenache and Mourvedre. The grapes were picked and then gently crushed and pumped to the stainless fermentation tank. The wines received pump-overs thrice daily to aid flavor extraction. The free run juice was then drained from the tank to another settling tank and the grapes were pressed and re-combined. The wine settled for about two weeks and then racked to a combination of neutral oak barrels and temperature controlled stainless steel tanks. The Syrah saw a mix of both French and American oak. Great care from the vineyard to the winery has produced a deep red coloured wine that is showing medium-bodied and delicious flavours of dark berries, licorice and chocolate with smooth tannins and enjoyable finish. In 1991, the winery relocated from Oakley to the Carneros region of Sonoma County. Here Fred pioneered the planting of Rhone varietals including Syrah, Viognier, Marsanne and Roussanne. Viognier is a tricky grape to grow. Its natural low acidity requires it to be picked at just the right moment. With this blend Cline Cellars chose grapes from vineyards that offered flavours indicative of the appellations from which they came. Solano County was chosen for its grapes are blessed with ample sun and provided maximum flavours. Their Mendocino vineyards, basking in warm days and cold nights contributed to the full-body weight of this wine and the Carneros vineyard was chosen because of the longer hang time required to boost the grapes flavours. All in all, this is an excellent balance of 3 vineyards. This Viognier shows big peach and apricot flavours mixed with citrus and floral notes: a powerhouse of flavour which will make an excellent match with flavourful foods like Mediterranean Stew and spicy Mexican dishes.
