From here, and other famous parts of the Marlborough region, a reputation for outstanding wines has spread around the world. Distinct regional characteristics have been celebrated and Mount Riley Wines owners John Buchanan and Steve Hotchin aim is to produce premium quality wines that are as unmistakably part of Marlborough as Mount Riley itself. Mount Riley has five vineyards, totaling 252.5 acres of the Wairau Valley and Seventeen Valley areas. The Mount Riley vineyard covers 50 acres and was established in 1996 and is planted predominately with Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay. The vineyard used for this wine offers a magnificent view of Mount Riley and the Richmond ranges. The land is a mixture of river stones and sandy loam, lying on two north-facing terraces. Each site was chosen carefully, for its unique attributes and ability to produce grapes of outstanding quality. A long growing season with a warm Indian summer produced grapes that exhibit the pungent fruit characters which typify Marlborough. The grapes were harvested at optimum ripeness with full flavour to produce outsatnding wines. This wine is a blend of three different clones of Chardonnay including clones 15, 6 and 2/23. Cool fermentation in both new oak barriques and stainless steel was used to produce this wine. 20% of this wine was barrel fermented and then blended with the balance which was fermented in stainless steel. This wine was then allowed to go through malolactic fermentation to soften the acidity and stored on lees for 7 months. This Chardonnay has an attractive melon and tropical fruit aroma with subtle oak adding complexity. The palate has similar flavours with a creamy oak complexity, great mouth feel and hints of creaminess. (12 x 75 cl)

Trinity Hill Hawke's Bay Chardonnay NZ DUPLICATE
Description: Hawkes Bay has a unique micro climate where vines reach deep into the stony, free draining soil of the old Ngaruroro riverbed, sheltered from the prevailing Westerly winds, basking in an abundance of dry, warm weather. At Trinity Hill's Gimblett Road Vineyards, the river stones gently release their heat long after the sun has set. This helps to promote perfect ripening of the grapes. Vines are planted, trained and pruned to expose as much leaf and fruit to sunlight as possible. North-South planted vine rows allow the mid day sun to warm the ground between rows, while removal of shoots and flowers early in the season reduces the crop level and opens the vine out to light and air. Using these techniques, the winegrowers at Trinity Hill grow moderate crops to consistently produce concentrated flavour and colour intensity in the finished wine. Typical fruit characters from Hawkes Bay Chardonnay such as grapefruit and melon are supplemented by biscuity barrel ferment characters with a light butteriness from the malolactic fermentation. The wine is rich and round, with soft acidity and attractive sweet fruit. (12 x 75 cl)

Seifried Estates OLD COACH ROAD Unoaked Chardonnay Nelson NZ
Description: Winemakers Note: Traditionally Chardonnay is made in an oaked style, however, we are often asked: what does Chardonnay as a grape variety with no oak aging taste like? This is it. The grapes were hand harvested and whole bunch pressed, cold fermented to retain crisp fruit flavours, and then a portion was inoculated for malolactic fermentation. The wine was blended and bottled in July. Tasting Note: Beautiful tropical fruit on the nose is supported by intense apple and stone fruit flavours on the palate. Fresh citrus characters are softened by a slightly buttery finish. This wine is easy drinking, with an attractive weight and body. With tastes like these, its appeal is to drink now rather than cellar too long! The Vineyards: Our Rabbit Island vineyards are situated on a wide river flat. The soil is made up of gravely sandy loam, which marks the sites of kumara beds prior to European settlement in the early 1800's. The Maori transferred and spread fine gravel and sand over the land to provide suitable soils for their kumara plantings. Scrub was burned to give ash and charcoal, which increased soil fertility and gave characteristic topsoil. This fertility is now considerably reduced with modern farming. The soils are, however, very sandy and gravely and free draining. The water table is relatively high ensuring adequate underground water. These vineyards are about 1.5 kilometres from the sea, which helps moderate summer temperature. (12 x 75 cl)

Mud House SWAN Reserve Sauvignon Blanc Marlborough NZ
Description: John Joslin was a farmer in Essex and also had a business in Belgium. Together, with his wife Jennifer, they decided to sell up and cruise the world in their custom built yacht 'Dancing Wave'. They did this for six years before dropping anchor in New Zealand. After one visit to Marlborough the yacht was sold and 20 acres in the heart of the wine growing region was bought. Marlborough was chosen for its international reputation as a premium wine-growing region with one of the longest ripening periods in the world. The vineyard was named 'Le Grys' which was Jennifer's maiden name and planted varieties include Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Finally. a unique Mud block house was built in the vineyard and hence the name of the company was born and in 1996 the first vintage was released. This wine is made from a 50:50 blend of two batches of grapes. One came from a new block harvested for the first time near the mouth of the Awatere river, known as the Castles. The other from a Mud House run vineyard on Conders Bend, very close to the original Mud House Vineyard where it all started. The grapes were machine harvested under cool early morning conditions, pressed immediately, and the resulting juice was fermented very cool retaining all the fruit characters and aromatics, without introducing harsh skin characters that result from warm handling or skin contact. This is a pale straw coloured Sauvignon Blanc with intense passionfruit and currant aromas showing notes of mineral characters. (12 x 75 cl)
