Domaine Jean-Louis Chavy Puligny Montrachet AC
Description: The Domaine Gérard Chavy owns 27 acres of vineyards, and nearly all are in the village of Puligny-Montrachet, as well as a few rows of vines in neighboring Meursault. The Domaine Gérard Chavy, now run by Gérard's sons Jean-Louis and Alain, with this substantial acreage in the appellation provides the rare opportunity of offering reasonable quantities of domaine-bottled Puligny-Montrachet. Smoky, round, full and buttery style the wine lover can tell from aromas alone that Gérard Chavy wines are classic white Burgundies. Without the overly forward candy/fruit character of New World wines, these Chardonnays are made to drink with dinner. The 2000 vintage is a classic Puligny from Domaine Gerard Chavy, golden yellow colour and full with cool, apple fruit flavours. Clean, fresh, sophisticated wine, lovely to drink right now.
Domaine de l'Arlot CLOS DE ARLOT 1er Cru Nuits-Saint-Georges
Description: Domaine de L'Arlot takes its name from the 'Clos de L'Arlot', a ten acre vineyard surrounding the elegant house, which in turn takes its name from a small river that runs through the village of Premeaux and underground under the Clos. Most unusually for Burgundy, Jean Pierre de Smet did not inherit the domaine from his family and only came to the area and wine-making in 1977. He then studied oenology at Dijon, following which he was invited by AXA Insurance in 1987 to be a partner, manager and wine-maker in the domaine they were about to buy. De Smet's skill and willingness to innovate along with the inherent quality for the terroir have combined to project Domaine de L'Arlot to the very top with De Smet picking up countless medals for his wines. Clos-de-l'Arlot is a 4ha plot in Nuits-Saint-Georges and it has produced a light red coloured wine. Displaying plenty of Pinot Character the smoky, plummy nose gives way to a rich, soft palate with a complex finish. With the exception of two parcels in Vosne Romanée, the vineyards are located South of Nuits-Saint-Georges in the Cote de Nuits. There are many old vines, some of them over fifty years old, but the average is about twenty-five years. Strict pruning and very light fertilisation ensure very low yields to ensure that the very best quality is achieved in the grapes. The 'lutte raisonnee' approach informs viticultural practices, bringing them as close to organic as is reasonably feasible and only spraying as little as possible when it is absolutely necessary. This encourages a more beneficial ecosystem in the vineyard, allowing nature to establish its own checks and balances. In the winery intervention is kept to a strict minimum and yeasts are 100% wild. After a manual harvest, whole bunches are gently pressed, followed by a slow fermentation with temperatures being allowed to reach a maximum peak of a little over 30°c for a day. The wine then undergoes two to three weeks post-fermentation maceration, and fining, if it occurs at all, is carried out using fresh egg whites. The wine is then matured for just under two years in Domaine-seasoned Allier new oak. (12 x 75 cl)

Seghesio Zinfandel Sonoma County California
Description: Cooler vineyard temperatures preserve zinfandel’s juicy acidity and allowed for the grape tannins to mature on the vine while infusing scents of cracked black pepper and heightening zin’s briary, spicy essence. Fine, ripe tannins add a velvety richness seldom found in Zinfandel, while the elegant richness, broad mouth feel and a lingering minerality elicit typicity that indicate superior grape growing. Savory purity of fruit with both aromas and flavours of blueberry and cherry abound. Fruit for this wine came from four estate vineyards: San Lorenzo, Home Ranch, Lone Oak and River Road in Alexander Valley and Cortina in Dry Creek Valley. Once in the winery the results of vinification and 12 months in oak; of which 75% was American and 25% French; is a good colour and soft, ripe tannins. The Seghesio Story begins in 1886 when Edoardo Seghesio departed his family’s vineyards in Piedmonte, Italy for a new life in America. Like so many immigrants, he was drawn to Northern Sonoma County and the Italian Swiss Colony, to follow his passion for winemaking. The “colony,” as it was known, hired immigrants for three year stints, providing room and board and then, a lump sum at the end of those three years enabling employees to buy land or set up a business in their new home. Soon, Edoardo rose through the ranks to winemaker. Yet, he yearned for home. The Colony’s manager repeatedly encouraged him to stay and finally, it was his niece and the opportunity to purchase land that convinced Edoardo to remain. That young girl, Angela Vasconi and Edoardo were married in 1893. In 1895, they purchased a modest home in northern Alexander Valley, less for the home than the surrounding 56 acres Edoardo recognized as ideal vineyard land. They planted the “Home Ranch” that year to what has become the family’s lifeline – Zinfandel. Today his grandchildren share his passion as they farm over 80 hectares of Zinfandel in Alexander and Dry Creek Valley. Available in 37.5 cl Half Bottles. (12 x 37.5 cl)

It is here that Umberto and his wife Giuliana chose to start their Company in 1965 by buying 20 Hectares of land in the hills between 200 and 380 Metres above sea level which extend from the Via Emilia towards the Apennine Mountains and the border of Tuscany. Torre Fornello SINSAL GUTTURNIO Superiore Colli Piacentini DOC
Description: Donna Luigia Scotti Douglas, descendant of a noble Scottish family and widow of Count Zanardi Landi, grand duke of Tuscany, bequeaths the whole estate to her daughter in 1862. The will lists the whole of the Estate with great accuracy. In her will, Donna Luigia demands that the estate should never be split up, and that is why it came down complete to the present owner, including the vineyards, while it is fascinating to notice how each parcel of land had kept its own name. In 1972 the whole of the estate was sold to the Sgorbati family, winemakers of tradition from the surrounding area. Since 1991 Enrico Sgorbati, son of Giuseppe and Fernanda, has overseen winegrowing and in 1998 he started making high-quality wines in the old manor-house, now entirely restored. The vineyards of the Torre Fornello estate cover an area of 55 hectares on the hills around Piacenza, in the commune of Ziano. Here soil and climate are particularly suitable to winegrowing, an activity that has been going on since Roman times. The vineyards are under controlled cover crop, which forces the vines to a natural competition, resulting in lower yields per hectare, but of higher quality and more resistant to moulds. While every single winemaking and stocking stage follows the guidelines regulating organic products and the result is eco-friendly, high-quality wines. The grapes for this wine come from estate vineyards in the commune of Ziano enjoying a good site and certain microclimatic advantages. Gutturnio Superiore Sinsal is a blend of two grape varieties, Barbera and Bonarda, whose limited and selected yields give prestige to the wine. Sinsal is a word from the local dialect, meaning the middleman who in the old days acted not only as intermediary in the selling and buying of agricultural commodities, but also as a go-between, arranging marriages between local families. Hence the name given to a wine which is a perfect, long-lasting marriage between two noble grape varieties destined to improve with time. In October only the best bunches of grapes are selected and hand-picked, and each grape variety is then processed individually. The grapes are de-stemmed, soft pressed and then pumped into small stainless steel tanks, where they ferment with their skins at a controlled temperature ranging between 28° and 30°C. Maceration takes from 15 to 20 days to allow for a thorough separation of juice from skins. The wines thus obtained are mixed in the right proportions and left to age for about seven months, part in stainless steel tanks and part in oak barrels, which give a noticeable flavour and a balanced body to the wine. The wine is then aged in bottle for four months before it is released. This wine is a dark garnet colour verging on violet, with a vinous aroma showing hints of plum and cherry complementing the smooth wide-spectrum aroma. This wine is softly tannic with a stewed fruit aftertaste and enjoyable finish.
Domaine Fernand Lecheneaut LES PRULIERS 1er Cru Nuits Saint Georges
Description: In the early 1960's, this 22 acre estate was created by Fernand Lecheneaut while he worked for a négociant in Beaune. He took advantage of opportunities to buy parcels of various vineyards, and finally quit the shipper trade when he had acquired enough. Based mainly in the Côte de Nuits, spread through the appellations of Nuit-St-Georges, Morey-St-Denis, Vosne Romanée and Chambolle Musigny, where it is planted with 90% Pinot Noir. In addition the Domaine have a small vineyard in the grand cru Clos de la Roche in Morey-St-Denis. The remaining 10% of grapes produced are evenly divided between Chardonnay and Aligote. Their annual production of 2,500 cases comes in 13 different bottlings and availability is strictly limited. Domaine Fernand Lecheneaut has been run since 1985 by brothers Vincent and Philippe Lecheneaut. The Estate in Nuits St Georges is considered one of the finest in Burgundy and tradition is the by-word for the wines made here. Once harvested the wine spends 18 months in barrique without any fining or filtration. The wines produced are superbly crafted, concentrated yet forward and elegant with well integrated oak. This wine was produced from 25-year-old vines and is a deep dark ruby coloured wine with aromas of cherry, and black fruit. This Pinot Noir is a full-bodied and silky-textured wine with candied red and black fruits found in the lush, opulent, and exceptionally long-finish. (6 x 75 cl)

Ca' dei Frati PRATTO Lugana IGT Veneto
Description: The light golden colour gives way to perfumes of tropical fruit and a mineral hint characteristic of Ca’ dei Frati lead into a dry, rich palate. Made from 60% Lugana with 20% Sauvignon Blanc adding a perfumed lift to the blend, the remaining 20% Chardonnay fruit rounds out the palate, giving it depth and weight. The oak ageing adds a touch of spice to the lingering tropical fruit finish. Ca’ dei Frati remains the best producer in Lugana. The secret to their success is simple: outstanding vineyards. Vines are trained low, newer vineyards have a higher density of planting, and yields are well below the average for the zone. The quality of the fruit is accentuated in the modern winery, where Igino Dal Cero is not afraid to lose straightforward, primary perfumes if he gains weight, texture and complexity on the palate by allowing some of the vats to go through malolactic fermentation. This distinguishes theirs from many other Italian whites, and results in a wine with the sort of fullness and length that would, if produced in Friuli, fetch twice the price it currently does. The Dal Cero family has transformed their Ca’ dei Frati property into a model Italian estate over the past decade. When we first began buying their wines in 1987, they had just 12 hectares of grapes while today, they have vineyards covering 50 hectares, including I Frati in Sirmione, San Rocco in Pozzolengo, Ronchedone in Desenzano del Garda, La Tur in Desenzano del Garda and Rovizza Alta in Peschiera del Garda. This increase in quantity has been matched by an increase in quality, and today they are the best in Lugana and work tirelessly to position themselves as one Italy’s best white wine producers. Altos las Hormigas Mendoza Malbec Argentina
Description: Showing excellent depth of colour, this Malbec has youthful, almost floral perfumes which give way to fresh, chunky fruit characters with flavours of red berries and liquorice. Soft, rounded tannins balance and add depth to the juicy fruit. It has good length, with lingering chocolate and liquorice on the finish. The grapes for this wine are a blend of those grown on the Altos estate with those bought in from contracted grape growers in la Consulta, Vista Flores and Eugenio Bustos, in the Valle de Uco area as well as growers from Perdriel and Vistalba, districts in Luján de Cuyo. The vineyards in La Consulta, Vistalba and Perdriel are situated at 900-1000 metres above sea level. Some of the vines are 80 years old. The climate here is semi-desert, with hot days and cool nights, which help the aromatic development of the grapes. Alberto Antonini and his Tuscan friend, Antonio Morescalchi were so impressed with the vineyards in the area following their first trip to Argentina in 1995, that they persuaded a few friends to join them and bought this estate. Situated in Lujan de Cuyo, one of Mendoza’s premier growing areas, facing the Andes to the east, this property covers 216 hectares, of which 40 were planted between 1996 and 1999. Zandvliet Estate ENON QUE SERA Shiraz Robertson RSA
Description: Zandvliet was proclaimed as a 5000 hectare farm in 1838, along with the rest of the Robertson district at that time, being granted to a Van Zyl and a Balthazar Kloppers. Jacobus Stephanus de Wet bought the property in 1867. Upon his death, the farm was subdivided into Zandvliet, Prospect and Excelsior, with Paul de Wet buying what is now the family farm. Today, over 130 years later, the fourth generation, Paul and Dan, are the proud custodians of this magnificent family heritage, Zandvliet. In its long history as a De Wet family legacy, although always a wine farm, Zandvliet in turn became well-known as an ostrich farm, famous as a racehorse-breeding stud, and now respected as a wine estate specialising in the growing and making of fine Shiraz wines. Zandvliet Wine Estate is found in the scenic Robertson Valley, not far from Ashton. The vineyards straddle the Cogmans River, with the great Langeberg Mountains throwing a giant arm around it from the north and disappearing to the south-east. Here the vineyards benefit from a small range of low limestone hills with its highly prized kalkveld terroir. Grown mostly on the gravel and clay limestone slopes, the red varieties comprise Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, while Chardonnay, Colombard, Sauvignon and Chenin make up the whites. Currently there is an equal split between red and white plantings. Being in a semi-arid region, Zandvliet's vineyards rely on summer-long watering. Working in conjunction with world-renowned viticulturist, Dr Phillip Freese from Sonoma, California, the vineyard director Dan de Wet is able to regulate the growth of the vine to produce the finest possible fruit by scientifically withholding and supplying water to the vine during its growth period. This 100% Shiraz is a dark, ruby red colour with red fruit and cherry aromas that are well integrated with hints of oak. This complex shiraz is a smooth wine with spicy flavours as well as red fruits and liquorice culminating in a long enjoyable finish. (6 x 75 cl)
