Description: Winemaker's comments Colour : Brilliant green with golden specks. Bouquet : Herbaceous varietal aromas as well as tropical fruit. Palate : Generous flavours of gooseberry, passion fruit, peach and green pepper combine harmoniously with a good fruit/acid balance. Vineyards Fruit for this wine was sourced from vineyards in the Durbanville, Stellenbosch, Paarl and Darling areas, planted between 1980 and 1999. The grapes grow in Clovelly, Hutton, Tukulu and Oakleaf soils at altitudes of 100 m to 150 m above sea level. Vintage Although a warm and dry summer, spring rainfalls and irrigation, where necessary, helped to ensure vines did not suffer undue water stress. Careful vineyard management meant grapes were shaded from excessive heat and allowed to ripen slowly. The grapes were harvested by hand and machine at between 22° and 24° Balling from mid-February to end March. Winemaking The fruit was crushed and then cool-fermented in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks for two to three weeks at 13° C. No skin contact was allowed and only the free-run juice was used. The wine was left on the lees for just over three months until blending.

Fonseca Guimaraens 1995 Single Estate Port
Description: In no Port house is the inherited tradition of winemaking skill and knowledge more evident than at Fonseca Guimaraens, where the wines have been made by the same family since its foundation in 1822. The Fonseca Guimaraens house style is one of richness and warmth, with a lush fruit intensity and a structure of both dimension and finesse. More voluptuous than massive, Fonseca Ports are coveted for their sumptuous yet refined body and great longevity. In years when Fonseca does not declare a classic vintage, it selects the finest grapes from its own vineyards to yield a small quantity of this superb wine, which is produced exactly as a declared Fonseca Vintage. Beautifully structured and perfectly balanced, Guimaraens Vintage Ports show Fonseca's superb marriage of power and breed in a slightly lighter, earlier-maturing style. Subtle and silky, with very good concentration the 1995 vintage has fine tannins and a solid finish. (12 x 75 cl)

J Lohr RIVERSTONE Chardonnay Arroyo Secco Monterey California
Description: The 2003 vintage marks the seventeenth year of producing of our Riverstone Chardonnay, produced from our vineyards in the Arroyo Seco region in Monterey County. Each year, starting in 1995, J Lohr have incorporated higher percentages of traditional Burgundian production techniques into Riverstone, until the desired complexity was achieved . This includes more malo-lactic fermentation and sur lie ageing with lees stirring, which in turn creates a wine of greater complexity and nuance. The vines are grown primarily on Elder loam soils underlain by riverstones deposited over thousands of years from the Arroyo Seco river, allowing a four foot rooting zone that keeps the vine's vegetative growth and fruit in balance. Additionally, the cool climate and winds of the Salinas Valley extend the growing season and retain the natural grape acids and intense varietal character of the Chardonnay. Walking our vineyards in the Arroyo Seco in early September 2003 brought back memories of 1989. It was cold, very foggy and damp, with Chardonnay grape sugars running well behind normal. I was certain that harvest would not start until October (6 x 75 cl)
