Description: Tommasi Viticoltori is a family firm founded in 1902 by Giacomo Tommasi and today the estate is run by the 4th generation of family. From grandfather Giacomo's tiny vineyard, the Tommasi estate has grown steadily and now extends over 135 hectares of hillside vineyard blessed by mother nature, not only by a magnificent landscape, but more importantly by its perfect suitability for grapes. The family owns exceptionally well situated estates for the production of high quality white wine in the D.O.C. regions of Soave and near Lake Garda for Lugana, Custoza and Bardolino . In addition, it has vineyards in Valdadige, a valley created by the Adige river in the mountains north of the province of Verona. This wine is produced from the three Valpolicella classic grapes Corvina Veronese , Rondinella and Corvinone . Great care is taken with the grapes as they are placed on small open racks and left to dry by cool breezes of autumn and winter until the following February before they are used in the winery. Aged over 36 months in Slovenian oak and a further year in the bottle has produced an intense ruby red coloured wine. A warm, ripe nose that is both intense and refined gives way to a complex, smooth, full bodied, characteristic wine. The palate is exceptionally intense with chocolate and coffee background that is superbly balanced with power and smoothness. (12 x 75 cl)

Allegrini Amarone della Valpolicella Classico
Description: Allegrini Amarone della Valpolicella Classico represents modern winemaking at its best and embodies Franco Allegrini’s long-expressed goal of combining purity with balance and the traditional power and intensity of Amarone. The wine is a wonderful fusion of concentrated dried cherry fruit and fine, spicy, toasty oak. It has great structure, complexity and elegance yet remains intense and powerful through to the end, with a hint of spiced sour cherries on the finish. Grapes for the Amarone are hand harvested during the second half of September and are allowed to dry naturally for about 100 days at ‘Terre di Fumane’, a state of the art drying centre where both temperature and humidity are controlled. By drying the grapes under these conditions, the development of botrytis is avoided, and the integrity of the fruit is preserved. During the drying period the grapes lose 45% of their original weight. Allegrini’s modern approach ensures that the volatility which often characterises lesser Amarone is never found in his. The quality of all the wines Allegrini produce from their 70 hectares of vineyard is impeccable. They have fruit, balance, intensity, length, elegance, tipicity and, above all, drinkability. In short, they are among the elite of the world’s best producers of red wines. The price of grapes for Amarone has shot up dramatically in the past few years due to demand far outstripping supply. As a result, we're now beginning to see these grape prices being reflected by higher prices for Amarone. We feel though that Allegrini’s Amarone still remains excellent value for a truly world class wine. (12 x 37.5 cl)

Masi CAMPOLONGO di TORBE Amarone della Valpolicella Classico Veneto
Description: DESCRIPTION OF THE WINE Campolongo di Torbe is the most elegant of Masi’s Amarone crus. It is characterized by a rounded almondy flavour and by great intensity and balance. The choice of this vineyard is based not only on many years of technical experimentation at the Masi winery, but also on a very important historical document that indicates Mazzano and Torbe vineyards as the best in the valley for the production of this high-quality wine. In fact, with a contract dated 1194 , the monks of San Zeno Monastery, landowners of the entire Negrar Valley, leased the land to a certain Musio di Panego for a period of 29 years. The rent had to be paid with a certain quantity of grapes produced in the best area of the fiefdom, indicated as the Mazzano vineyards. If the vineyards yielded a poor crop because of hail, or other reasons, grapes had to be harvested at Capavo. This denomination is no longer in use but it corresponds to the upper hillside area of Torbe, where the vineyards of Campolongo di Torbe are now located. (6 x 75 cl)

Masi MAZZANO Amarone della Valpolicella Classico Vento

Mazzano was described by Sheldon and Pauline Wasserman as the Amarone which “sets the standard by which we judge the others” and Jancis Robinson in her “Vintage Timecharts” evaluated this wine as one of only four Italian wines to be included in the best 46 wines of the world. Mazzano is an austere and majestic wine, a true Amarone designed from its conception to be a great red wine and not just a lesser, drier style of Recioto. Mazzano is among the very few Amarones which can benefit from aging in small barrels. (6 x 75 cl)

Ca' Rugate AMARONE della Valpolicella DOC
Description: Ca’ Rugate established by the Tessari family in 1986 has a great deal of respect for tradition and a passion for viticulture, inspired by firm convinction that the quality first is created in the vineyard and then in the cellar. Cà Rugate takes the name from the hill of volcanic origin, at the centre of the Soave Classico area, in which its vineyards are positioned. The soft inclinations of those hills were always adapted to create great wines because of their fantastic position, special microclima and special soil composition. The Estate covers 30 ha of Ca’Rugate, 25 ha around monforte d’apone and 5 ha around montecchia di crosara, in the region of Valpolicella. In the vineyard, they use modern pruning techniques, along with careful canopy management and green pruning; while the latest vinification techniques bring out distinctive aromas and refined flavours in the wines. Made from a selection of the best grapes from Ca’ Rugate’s own vineyards in the hills around Montecchia di Crosara this is a blend of 40% Rondinella, 30% Corvinone and 30% Corvin. The grapes are Hand picked during the last two weeks of September, and laid flat in small wooden boxes containing an average of just six kilograms. This allows good air flow during the crucial drying process. The grapes are allowed to dry gently in well-ventilated rooms for around 4-5 months, concentrating their flavours, sweetness and colour. In winter, the grapes are crushed, fermentation starts with natural yeast and then the must is filled into 500l oak casks to finish fermenting. The wine then matures in wood for 25-30 months before bottling.. Intense garnet red coloured Amarone full of concentrated aromas of ripe blueberries, blackberries and cherries is enhanced with a hint of spicy oak. The palate is rich, full bodied and complex as well as being beautifully balanced and lingering. (6 x 75 cl)

Cantina Negrar Amarone della Valpolicella Classico DOC
Description: Seven gentlemen, on august 23, 1933, set an appointment in the offices of Francesco Betteloni, notary public, to sign the deed giving birth to the Cantina Sociale Valpolicella. Today, the Cantina Valpolicella directs and coordinates the production of approximately 200 grape-growers with vineyards covering a total of 450 hectares. All these are located in the classic Valpolicella hillside zone. All have the same dedication and passion as the original founders. They work together and in their mutual interests to turn member producer's grapes into high quality wines, performing activities that improve winemaking and grape-growing knowledge and culture. The vineyards are situated on about 450 hectares in the classical Valpolicella Hills area Northwest of Verona, which are mostly concentrated in the town of Negrar. The most used system of cultivation is the traditional Pergola system, with about 2,500-3,000 plants per hectare, while the average age of the vines is 20 years. The cultivation of the vineyard has among its primary objectives the maximum possible degree of respect for nature: for this reason, biological techniques are used, and pesticides are used as little as possible. The harvest is done entirely by hand, with many selections for special wines, such as the Amarone, produced from single vineyards to exalt its characteristics. It is a blend of 70% Corvina, 15% Corvinone and 15% Rondinella while the blend is left in both in 225 liter barriques made of French Allier and Never oak and in 50 hl barrels for 18 months. Refinement continues in the bottle for 12 months. A fantastic wine with a garnet red dense and compact colour, the bouquet is strong and persistent, ethereal and fruity with hint of black cherries and dry prunes. The palate is well structured, smooth with velvety tannin. (6 x 75 cl)

Corte Sant'Alda Amarone Della Valpolicella DOC
Description: Marinella Camerani is on a mission to create authentic wines that are strongly connected to the local terroir. Manipulation and intervention are reduced to a minimum, in keeping with the ideal natural balance which is the principle that rules the estate. Continuous research and experimenting, both in the vineyard and in the winery, rediscovering old abandoned practices, techniques that have been replaced by modernity for its own sake, are the daily enterprise of Marinella and her family. Amarone made from half-shrivelled grapes to produce a wine which falls firmly into the 'impegnativo' category, this is beauty and the beast rolled into one: chewy plums, bitter cherries, mocha coffee and what Oz Clarke describes rather well as 'bruised sourness.' The grapes are sourced from various sites with an average altitude of 300 metres and dried in a south-facing breeze-cooled drying loft in small wooden crates, eventually pressed towards the end of February. The cold winter temperatures, the long period of fermentation on the skins and the use of wood during vinification encourage the development of the wine's unique aromas. (6 x 75 cl)

Alpha Zeta 'A' Amarone della Valpolicella Veneto
Description: Alpha Zeta was established with winemaker Matt Thompson in 1999. The original aim was quite simple: to produce mid-priced Veronese wines using fruit from selected vineyards rather than by buying and blending bulk wine from the various co-operatives. Over the years, Matt has developed a great relationship with a series of growers, and has convinced them to lower yields and pick later. This has resulted in riper and more flavoursome grapes. The grapes for these wines are sourced from vineyards in the Valpantena and Monteforte d'Alpone valleys, both of which are to the east of Verona. Once the grapes arrive at the winery, it is then Matt's job to ensure that these flavours are retained in the finished wine, and this he does admirably. These are modern, innovative wines that express the real quality inherent in Veronese viniculture. Rich and modern with an attractive fresh perfume it is dispalying aromas of ripe black cherry, plum and hints of fruit cake. On the palate it is full bodied and rich, with cherry, vanillin and coffee flavours. Well balanced tannins and long finish mark this wine out. (6 x 75 cl)
