Le Pupille MORELLINO di SCANSANO Magliano Toscana
Description: The Morellino di Scansano is a blend of 85% Sangiovese and 15% Alicante and Malvasia Nera. It has delicious ripe fruit on the nose, with the cherry-strawberry hints characteristic of ripe Sangiovese. The Alicante adds greater depth of colour to the blend whereas the Malvasia Nera emphasises the perfume of this ripe, approachable wine. Elisabetta Geppetti has injected a great deal of dynamism into Le Pupille’s wines in the past few vintages, yet has been careful to look after the detail as well. This is illustrated by the quality and consistency of this, their basic Morellino. (12 x 37.5 cl)

Castello Banfi SUMMUS Sant Antimo DOC Toscana
Description: In 1978 John and Harry Mariani, successful American importers, joined forces with Italy's leading enologist, Ezio Rivella; their objective was to produce top-quality wine on a scale never before attempted in Italy. Castello Banfi is a rarity among Italian wine estates, not just because of its size , its composition of single vineyards, or its state-of-the-art winery, but because it was started from scratch a little over 25 years ago. At that time the Mariani Brothers were looking for an estate where the climate and soil had to be ideal for the cultivation of many of the world's noble grape varieties, and it had to be within a region of Italy that already had a tradition of quality winemaking. The 4,500 acres that the Mariani Brothers first found were near Montalcino, and eligible for the status DOCG of Brunello di Montalcino, one of the most prestigious of all Italian wines and it met the other criteria as well. By good luck the adjacent estate, of 2,600 acres, became available shortly afterwards and in 1984 the 11th century castle was the final purchase, and the estate was renamed Castello Banfi. Today Castello Banfi is producing a wide range of wines including Brunello di Montalcino that was Italy's first wine to be accorded D.O.C.G. status, a testament to its aristocracy, balance and fabulous proclivity for ageing. This wine is a blend of 45% Sangiovese , 40% Cabernet Sauvignon and 15% Syrah. It is aged Approximately 24 months but because of the outstanding structure an additional six months barrel ageing was required to achieve balance and harmony. The varietal spices contribute great complexity to the rich Brunello and Cabernet characteristics, resulting in rare length and richness. A wine that will handsomely reward the patience of lengthy bottle ageing. (1 x 75 cl)

Barone Ricasoli CASALFERRO Sangiovese di Toscana Tuscany
Description: Castello di Brolio sits on a historic three thousand acre Estate in Gaiole in Chianti that was ceded to the Ricasoli family in 1141 by the Republic of Florence. For over 900 years, the Estate has produced some of the most important wines in all of Italy. Today, under the leadership of Baron Francesco Ricasoli, the 32nd Baron of Brolio, Castello di Brolio continues its leadership in the production of fine wine. Castello di Volpaia BALIFICO IGT Toscana
Description: Youthful soft red, vivid berry fruit aromas with creamy new oak overtones. Smooth velvety palate with classic fruit and spicy tannins leading to a long, elegant finish. One of the most famous estates in Chianti Classico, Castello di Volpaia is owned by the elegant Giovanella Stianti and run by enologist Maurizio Castelli. The modern winemaking equipment is discreetly arranged within the confines of the medieval hamlet of Volpaia near Radda. The vineyards include some of the highest in the Classico area, up to 600m. This influences the style of the Volpaia wines, which are always rich in floral perfumes and elegant in texture. This is true across the range, from the beautifully balanced Chianti Classico, to the more oaky and developed Riserva and through to the two fine “supertuscans”. Coltassala is mainly Sangiovese, with ripe plummy fruit, controlled oak flavours and fine tannins. Balifico adds one third Cabernet Sauvignon to the Sangiovese, bringing a more berry fruity character and equally notable aromatic finish (6 x 75 cl)

It is ruby red in colour, with attractive youthful perfumes of ripe, red fruit, strawberries and redcurrants with the French oak adding a spicy depth. The Capezzana estate, 24 km north west of Florence, is owned by the Conti Contini Bonacossi family, and at one point all seven children worked in the business. The younger generation is now firmly in charge of the estate, with daughter Benedetta Contini Bonacossi the winemaker. Avignonesi 50 & 50 Toscana IGT
Description: Even more sought after than Desiderio and the Grandi Annate Avignonesi' 50 & 50 is an oustanding and iconoclastic. This wine, as important and special as it is rare being a collaboration between Merlot and Sangiovese . Once in the winery this wine spend 18 months in barriques and a further 18 months in bottle. Bright, youthful ruby red in colour, this wine shows great balance between these two grape varieties. The soft, rounded Merlot softens the Sangiovese, adding flesh to its elegant fruit. Very intense to the last, with the firm tannins characteristic of young Sangiovese and wonderful long length. Avignonesi is one of the great names of Italian wine. Ettore and Alberto Falvo have, over the past 30 years, taken a small estate and built it into a paradigmatic producer that has put Montepulciano on the map. The modernisation that took place at Avignonesi in the 1970s and early 1980s abated somewhat towards the end of the latter decade, but new energy has once again been injected into the business by the next generation of Falvos. Avignonesi has four estates, two in Montepulciano and two in the DOC zone of Cortona, situated to the east of Montepulciano in the foothills of the Apennines. These estates have about 115 hectares of vineyard and have been the area of greatest focus for Avignonesi over the past decade. Ettore Falvo has translated his passion for alberello training into the new vineyards planted on their estates. New Sangiovese vineyards are planted at a density of 7500 vines per hectare and the modified alberello they are using ensures earlier ripening, which has given fuller, riper wines than Montepulciano was previously capable of producing.
