It may surprise some onlookers, then, to see Dirk Niepoort at the cutting edge of fine table wine production in the Douro, treading a path which other premium shippers have felt decidedly uncomfortable about. However, this is Dirk Niepoort a vigneron and winemaker extraordinaire, whose passion for old vines, low yields and terroir are as applicable to table wine as they are to great port. The first commercial release of Redoma Tinto was 1991 and it was warmly met by customers and the press alike. Dirk hasn`t looked back since, and now these wines are regarded as some of the very best in all Portugal. This wine uses old vines from Quinta do Carril and Pinhao valley vineyards, where Tinta Amarela grape dominates. Great care is taken from the vineyard; where Tinta Amarela, Toutriga Franca and Tinta Roriz are selected; to the winery in producing this wine. After fermentation it is aged in new oak barrels and this is where Dirk Niepoort makes a statement of authenticity.
