Jackson Wine Estates LA CREMA Chardonnay Russian River Valley California
Description: Part of Jackson Wine Estates, La Crema winery was founded in 1979 and quickly established itself as a pioneer for intensely flavoured Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. The Russian River Valley is home to La Crema. Here the vineyards are blanketed by cool fog from the nearby Pacific Ocean during the heat of the summer growing season. These moderating conditions are ideal for cultivating Chardonnay with naturally bright acidity and complex flavours. The Wente, Dijon and Rued Chardonnay clones are used in this wine to enhance dimensions of vibrancy and perfumed aromatics. In the vineyard fruit-thinning is undertaken to remove late flowering clusters ensuring even ripening throughout the vineyards. Once ready the grapes are hand-picked from cool climate vineyards, delivered to the winery in small, half ton bins to protect the integrity of the fruit. Once in the Winery a belt delivery system for whole cluster pressing is used to capture fresh fruit flavours and minerality. 100% barrel fermentation and 100% malolactic fermentation take place in French oak barrels, . Next barrel aged sur lie occurs for 10 months with bi-monthly lees stirring for creamy mouthfeel. Finally, the wine is bottled unfiltered to express the pure character of the Chardonnay. Winemaker Melissa Stackhouse had the following comments to make about this wine: 'Peach, mango, Pippen apple and lemon drop meld into a wonderful combination of fruit, which is balanced by hazelnut, ginger and subtle butterscotch. Intense pear, nectarine, and Meyer lemon lead creamy layers into the finish.' (6 x 75 cl)

Hartford Family Winery HARTFORD COURT THREE JACKS VINEYARD Chardonnay Russian River Valley
Description: Hartford Family Winery was founded in 1993 as a result of Don and Jennifer Hartford's appreciation for the wines, the people and the unique vineyards near their Russian River Valley home. Located in the Sonoma County town of Forestville, the winery is about 15 miles from the cool Pacific coast. Three Jacks Vineyard is a small seven-acre property jointly owned by Joe and Steve Dutton. The Duttons refer to the vineyard as Triple J-S vineyard. We began writing JJJ’s on each barrel, and soon the winery workers began calling the wine Three Jacks, and the name stuck. The vineyard is planted with four very distinctive Chardonnay clonal selections: the Raffo and Rued Chardonnay field selections, Dijon Clone 96 and UC Davis Clone 15. Each clone is picked and fermented separately and only the best barrels from each lot are blended to make the final bottling. This cool vineyard site in the Green Valley sub-appellation of the Russian River Valley produces Chardonnay with remarkable personality. Old Wente and Dijon Clones greatly inspire the wine’s floral bouquet and flamboyant fruit qualities. Aromas of Meyer lemon, spiced apple and candied ginger give way to a crushed stone and mineral laden finish. (12 x 75 cl)

De Loach Chardonnay Russian River Valley California
Description: Ambrosial scents greet you from the glass; ripe fruit flavours of Bartlett pear, Macintosh apple and Meyer lemon offer substantial counterpoints to beautifully suggestive French oak components of cinnamon, nutmeg, and hazelnut. This mouthwatering wine shows a delightful complexity, while the rich, creamy mid-palate is framed by a well-balanced acid tannin structure leading to a brilliant clean finish that leaves you wanting more. Russian River Valley Chardonnay is a blend of several premium vineyards located within three miles of the winery in the heart of the Russian River Valley. Carefully tended vines yield fruit of exemplary quality and this white wine it is a pure expression of Russian River Valley terroir. The juice was fermented in a combination of stainless steel tanks and French oak barrels. The barrel fermented portion of wine was then aged for 8 months in French oak to produce an intricately layered wine with delicate nuances of fruit and oak. The Russian River Valley has come to be known as 'America's Burgundy,' and DeLoach is proud to have been an important factor in this distinction. Purchased by Boisset in 2003 and the appointment of new winemaker Greg La Follette marked the start of their return to form for DeLoach. (12 x 75 cl)

Simi Winery GOLDFIELDS VINEYARD Chardonnay Reserve Russian River Valley California
Description: The cool climate of the Russian River Valley contributes to Simi's Reserve Chardonnay. The influence of the Pacific Ocean gives the Russian River Valley a long, extended and very moderate growing season. The location of Simi's Goldfields vineyard is perfectly situated within the heart of the Russian River Valley, close enough to the coast the get the benefits of the cool fog, and inland enough to ensure the vineyard will get the degree days that allow the Chardonnay to ripen to perfection every vintage. When Simi planted the Goldfields Vineyard in 1989, Simi opted for field selections rather than the heat-treated clones that make up most post-phylloxera Chardonnay vineyards. The Simi team took cuttings from some of the oldest and best Chardonnay vineyards in California choosing them for the diversity of flavors they would contribute to the wine. Golden straw colour and sandalwood and brown spice aromas, this wine has lemon and other citrus flavors that mingle with the essence of ripe red apple and well-integrated oak. Its pleasing mouthfeel gives way to a long, complex finish. (12 x 75 cl)

Belvedere Estate RUSSIAN RIVER VALLEY Chardonnay California
Description: Belvedere Winery specialises in artisinal wines from Northern Sonoma vineyards. For 15 years the owners of Belvedere, the Hambrecht family, have been searching out the best sites to produce wines with a real sense of place. As many of today's wines become increasingly indistinct, Belvedere has made a commitment to produce wines of focus and individuality. Three of California's most remarkable grape-growing sites surround Healdsburg, the location of the Belvedere winery. Dry Creek Valley, Alexander Valley and Russian River Valley all lie within 15 minutes of each other yet offer dramatically different micro-climates and are farmed accordingly, matching varieties to locations. This wine was sourced from the cooler sites of the Russian River Valley, and is extremely well balanced with restrained peachy fruit showing hints of vanilla and spice. Gallo Family Vineyards LAGUNA RANCH Chardonnay Russian River Valley California
Description: Our Laguna Vineyard Chardonnay displays the intense peach, pear, apple and melon of a great cool-climate Chardonnay. Accentuated by the creaminess from sur-lie aging along with the sweet vanilla and toastiness from the oak barrels, this wine is deliciously complex with a long, lingering finish. Grapes for this wine were handpicked and sent whole cluster to a membrane press, bypassing the crusher to reduce the potential for bitter tannin extraction. A press cut was taken at approx. 140 gallons/ton to increase elegance and eliminate phenolic harshness.Grapes were gently pressed in whole clusters to increase elegance and minimize phenolics. Our family's Laguna Ranch Vineyard, originally planted in the late 1800's, is located in the Region I hillsides of the Russian River Valley. Soils here are a combination of gravelly and sandy loam, referred to as Sebastopol series. The fog that lingers here throughout the day makes this one of our coolest Sonoma County vineyards, and produces Chardonnay grapes with crisp acidity and concentrated citrus, apple, and pear flavors and aromas. With three generations and over six decades of experience in northern Sonoma, our family believes that the secret to making world class wines is to begin with world class grapes. This is why we vigorously shoot-thinned and leaf-removed vines to intensify varietal character for this wine. Hand harvesting of the specially selected vineyard blocks for this wine occurred in late 2000. (6 x 75 cl)

Francis Ford Coppola DIRECTORS CUT Chardonnay Russian River California
Description: When Francis Coppola chose Sonoma County as the home for his new winery, he did so because of the area's beauty and winemaking potential. By selecting Sonoma, Francis provided the winemaker Corey Beck, a Sonoma native, with the opportunity to make wines with grapes grown in his proverbial own backyard. Director's Cut wines are the result-appellation-designated wines from Sonoma'sdiverse and distinctive appellations. The Russian River Valley climate is sculpted by a regular intrusion of cooling fog from the Pacific Ocean a few miles to the west. Much like the tide, the fog ebbs and flows, arriving in the evening, cooling the area down from its daytime high by as much as 35 to 40 degrees, and retreating the following morning. This natural air conditioning allows Chardonnay grapes to develop full flavour maturity over an extended growing season. The Chardonnay fruit are crushed whole-cluster and then fermented entirely in French oak barrels to achieve a seductive, round texture with quintessential Russian River Valley flavours of green apple, honeysuckle, and sweet vanilla with citrus notes. Its sweet perfume previews its palate with hints of honeysuckle, crisp apple, and orange blossoms. 'Winemaking and filmmaking are two great art forms that are very important in the development of California. They both start with raw ingredients-in the case of wine, the land and the grapes, and in the case of film, the script and the actors' performances. The winemaker takes these raw materials and ferments and blends. He says yes to this batch, no to that one. The director does the same thing: a series of yeses and nos, from casting and costuming to edits and sound mixes. In both cases you have to start with top notch raw materials-whether it's the land or a script.' -Francis Ford Coppola (6 x 75 cl)

Jackson Wine Estates LA CREMA Chardonnay Sonoma Coast California
Description: La Crema was founded in 1979 and quickly established itself as a pioneer for intensely flavoured Chardonnay and Pinot Noir from the cool Sonoma Coast. Continuing this tradition, La Crema pursues the ultimate expression of the Russian River Valley, Carneros and Anderson Valley by handcrafting wines of distinctive flavour which achieve elegance and balance The Sonoma Coast is located on the western coastal fringe of Sonoma County, starting with a narrow strip at the Mendocino County border and continuing through the mouth of the Russian River; then down to the Sonoma Carneros border of Napa. This AVA is the largest in Sonoma County yet is the least planted. Known for its dramatic flux in temperature, the warm days and cool nights allow gradual ripening of grapes with fully developed flavours, high natural acidity and low pH. The region’s cold conditions push the limits of grape growing making it particularly well suited for Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. The hand-picked Chardonnay grapes from cool climate vineyards located six to twenty-five miles from the cold Pacific Ocean are delivered to the winery in small half ton bins to protect the integrity of the fruit. Once in the winery the belt delivery system for whole cluster pressing is used to to capture fresh fruit flavours. A clonal selection union of Dijon, Rued, and Wente add layers of complexity and aromatics and then 90% of the fruit undergoes barrel fermentation and 85% malolactic fermentation to enhance creamy textures. Finally, the barrel aged wine is left for seven months with bi-monthly lees stirring to create richness in the mouth. Melissa Stackhouse Wine Maker commented: 'Citrus aromas, lemon peel and green apple are balanced with clove and subtle vanilla in the background. Flavours of green apple, lemon and lime, with an unctuous middle, with spice and caramel that add richness and texture to the lingering finish..' (12 x 37.5 cl)

Gallo Family Vineyards ESTATE Chardonnay Sonoma County California
Description: Complex, elegant and rich, this Chardonnay displays a skillful balance between power and finesse. The wine exhibits a nose of pears, apples and mango with a touch of clove and spice on the finish. We recommend enjoying this wine with foods such as grilled salmon in lemon and butter, served with foie gras and Roquefort cheese. Serve slightly chilled . VINEYARDS The grapes came from one of our family vineyards, Laguna Ranch, located in Sonoma County. Sonoma County is situated 100 km north of San Francisco, west of Napa, and alongside the Pacific Ocean. In the centre region of Sonoma County lies Russian River Valley, where Laguna Ranch Vineyard rests in the benchlands. Originally planted in the late 1800s, the vineyard is located in climatic Region I . Soils are a combination of gravelly and sandy loam, referred to as Sebastopol series. The fog coming from the Pacific Ocean lingers in this area throughout the day, making it one of the coolest regions of Sonoma County. Chardonnay grapes grown in this region develop the right balance between crisp acidity and concentrated citrus, apple and pear flavours and aromas. HARVEST With a heritage of three generations in Sonoma, our family firmly believes that ''great wines start with great grapes.'' To intensify the true varietal character of the grapes, shoots were thinned from the vines and leaves were removed by hand during the growing season. From September 3 to 5, 100% of the grapes were hand harvested while the sugar levels were at an average of 23.4 Brix. WINEMAKING Grapes for our wine were sent in whole clusters to a membrane press, bypassing the crusher to reduce the potential for bitter tannin extraction. In addition, this wine contains press juice that was collected for cool fermentation and aged for an average of 18.9 months in European barrels . Gallo Family Vineyards ESTATE Chardonnay Northern Sonoma California
Description: After the repeal of Prohibition in 1933, Ernest & Julio Gallo started their winery in California. Unable to obtain bank loans, they rented a warehouse and bought equipment on credit. More than sixty years later, the Gallo family still controls one of the world's most successful wine companies. The Gallo philosophy of continual improvement saw Julio Gallo travelling throughout California seeking high quality grapes and vineyards; he came to the conclusion that Sonoma County has the finest growing area in California. Its complex geography provides an endless variety of growing conditions, and eleven viticultural appellations have been established in Sonoma. Grapes from Estate vineyard blocks located in Sonoma County's Russian River Valley were used for this wine. Gallo has achieved a worldwide reputation for producing Chardonnay grapes full of character and concentrated varietal flavour here. Sometimes referred to as a cool climate growing region, the Russian River Valley benefits from its proximity to the nearby Pacific Ocean. Warm daytime temperatures routinely cool down at night as a result of marine fog intrusion. Such a weather phenomena slows the ripening process, allowing the grapes more time to deepen and develop character. The soil found at Laguna Ranch also plays an important role. Known as 'Sebastopol' series, it represents a mixture of gravelly and sandy loam ideal for growing world-class Chardonnay grapes. Winemaking has been a tradition in the Gallo family for almost 70 years and the Estate bottled range is one of their flagship wines. All grapes were harvested by hand and whole cluster pressed in the winery. New French oak barrels were used to age sur lies for 11 months while being stirred every 2 to 3 weeks. The vintage distinguishes itself by being powerful, focused and elegant all at the same time. With layer after layer of flavour and beautifully integrated textures, it is nothing short of extraordinary, a winning combination of New World fruit and Old World craftsmanship. (6 x 75 cl)

The grapes are harvested by hand early in the morning and clusters are hand sorted before a gentle pressing.
