Domaine Jean Pillot LES MACHERELLES 1er Cru Chassagne Montrachet
Description: Jean-Marc Pillot has recently taken over from his father, Jean, at the family owned domaine. While able to draw on the experience and advice of his father he has made changes to the estate, including a new cave, that have propelled the domaine up the league of premiere producers of wine in Burgundy. Equally capable of producing great white or red wine the syle is always intensely fruity, graceful, and precise. With white wines dominating the 10 hectare domaine the vineyard holdings are spread throughout the village of Chassagne with subsidiary parcels in Puligny, Santenay, and Remigny . The vines in most parcels are between 25 and 50 years old. Traditional viticultural practices are used in the vineyards where, Cordon de Royat and Guyot Simple pruning and training systems are employed. The whites are fermented 12 to 18 months in barrel, never using no more than 25% new wood so as not to overwhelm the intensity of fruit and sense of terroir specific to each wine. Bâtonnage is practiced to enrich the whites but is not exaggerated while the wines are manipulated as little as possible and are bottled unfiltered to preserve their purity. A fine and complex Chardonnay with intense aromas of kirsch, the 2000 vintage is a typical Chassagne-Montrachet with good acidity, medium to full bodied with a long finish. (6 x 75 cl)

This Chassagne Montrachet 1999 vintage is creamy with hints of hazelnut butter on the nose, and is considered by Pillot, similar to the very successful 1992 vintage with a great palatte, good acidity and long finish. The 2000 vintage is a lovely pale yellow colour with aromas of candied fruits and flowers. This Chardonnay was green harvested, Jean-Marc's first experience of this, producing an intensely flavoured wine, pure and dense, with bright acids contributing to the impression of balance, with a long finish.

This 1er Cru wine comes from a vineyard below Ruchottes with a great clay and chalk terrior that is reflected in this lovely Chardonnay. The 2000 vintage is full of fat flavours wth an almost tannic grip. The lively finish gives expression to the butter, nut, and citrus flavours. (6 x 75 cl)
