With an iron rich subsoil, , containing a large amount of iron-pan which gives it that highly characteristic taste of a Pomerol wine. Before the war, this estate in a single piece was enlarged and reconstituted with a judicious grape mix consisting of Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon. Intelligently vinified, the wine of Ferrand- which is sometiems partly sold with the label Chateau Vieux Ferrand- is soft and very delicate, similar to certain Medoc wines. Its fine demeanor and its great finesse makes it very justifiably appreciated. The gravel part near the church in Pomerol and its old vines, planted mainly to Merlot are vinified separately and produce a better class wine sold with the brand name chateau Haut Ferrand.
