Description: Chateau Margaux may trace its origins back as far as the 12th Century when there was no sign of any viticulture. It was owned by French nobility, and was known as La Mothe de Margaux meaning a small rise in the land. It was not until the Lestonnac family took possession of the estate that it began to resemble the modern day Chateau Margaux. In the ten years that followed 1572, Pierre Lestonnac, in anticipation of a change from arable agriculture to viticulture on the Medoc, made dramatic changes to the estate. By the beginning of the 18th Century Chateau Margaux comprised 265 ha, of which one third was devoted to viticulture. Today the estate has changed very little in size or layout. The wines are fermented in oak vats, and the reds see up to two years maturation in oak, in general, though, Pavillon Rouge is bottled three to four months earlier than Chateau Margaux. The second wine Pavillon Rouge du Chateau Margaux has a production of about 16500 cases per year. The degree of selection is constantly going up for the first wine, which diverts a lot of very good wine in the direction of Pavillon Rouge. The selection of a third wine, begun in 1997, was continued in 1998. It has now become a systematic reflex. This operation, which demonstrates Chateau Margaux's growing concern for rigour, as much for the second wine as for the first.. This selection policy enabled the Pavillon Rouge 1998 to be of astonishing concentration and undoubtedly one of the most powerful to date. The Pavillon Rouge 1998 possesses all the qualities of its vintage, intense fruit, a great length on the palate and of course great potential for improving with age.. (12 x 75 cl)

The second wine Pavillon Rouge du Chateau Margaux has a production of about 16500 cases per year. The growing season was very wet in 2001, and as a result the flowering of the vines went quick and evenly. During the entire summer, there were unusually alternate periods of hot and cold, dry and wet weather, which encouraged vegetation growth and slowed ripening. The havest was delayed to 1st October when the grapes are manually harvested and sorted. This wine has developed early and it is considered that the growing season has been responsible as the grapes were picked at the perfeect ripeness. In general, though, Pavillon Rouge is bottled three to four months earlier than Chateau Margaux and this wine has a remarkable length of palate with an overall firm but soft impression, confiming it as a very fine vintage. Similar to the 1999, it has great aromatic finesse and its tannic texture is tender and harmonious. (12 x 75 cl)

Andre Lurton Chateau Dauzac LA BASTIDE DAUZAC Margaux
Description: Chateau Dauzac was classified a great growth in 1855, however, wine growing would appear to go back to the thirteenth century. However, it was necessary to wait until the arrival of Thomas Michel Lynch in 1740 for the vines to be consolidated into the beautiful vineyard that we know today. In more recent time the chateau was bought by the MAIF insurance company in 1988, and in 1992 they handed over the running of the estate and the Presidency of the Board of Directors to Andre Lurton. Now in charge, it is Andre Lurton's reponsibiltiy to produce the wine from the 45 hectares of 15-20 year old vines. From the vineyard to the winery great care is taken in producing this wine from the manual harvest to table sorting both before and after destemming quality is always the driving force. Made from a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon 58%, Merlot 37% and a little Cabernet Franc 5% this wine will splend 12 months in oak barrels with racking each trimester and fined using eggwhites. Decanter considered: 'Dauzac obtains the best mark among all Medoc Classified Growth; 17.5. Aromatic and complex, quite oaky. Silky, sweet, explosive fruit, firm tannins and lovely acidity. Elegant and poised will be very good 2-10 years. It is interesting to note that Ernest Davis, who was the manager of both Dauzac and Ducru Beaucaillou, perfected the famous bouillie bordelaise here in 1885 with the help if Professor Alexis Millardet.
