Veuve Clicquot Ponsardin WHITE LABEL Demi-Sec Non Vintage Champagne
Description: Continuity of style is all-important to Veuve Clicquot, and it is displayed year after year in Veuve Clicquot Demi-Sec. Like Brut Yellow Label, Demi-Sec is a blend of several good years, but behind its white label is a very different wine, sweeter yet equally mature and balanced. Demi-Sec is a Champagne blended from wines of several good years, each one made of the grapes of Veuve Clicquot's legendary Premiers and Grands Crus. The blend comprises about 56% Pinot Noir, about 28% Chardonnay and about 16% Pinot Meunier. The glorious sweetness of Demi-Sec derives from a weighty dosage of sugar mixed with reserve wine. This is added during dégorgement, after the second fermentation, producing a more soft and supple balance but always retaining the freshness so essential in a sweet wine. The wine is bright and clear, a rich yellow colour with golden shades, with a persistent and delightful sparkle. On the nose it is rich and intense, dominated by nutty, spicy aromas- almonds, nougat, honey and ginger. It is of course sweet on the palate, but this is a refreshing sweetness, not in the least cloying. The taste is well balanced, reminiscent of plums and dried fruits. This finish is both soft and very smooth.
Veuve Clicquot Ponsardin YELLOW LABEL Brut Non Vintage Champagne
Description: Ultimately, the reputation of a great Champagne house is based in its skill in blending a consistently fine flagship wine, rather than the vintage Champagnes, which follow exceptional weather. In Champagne, the style of a House is always more significant than the style of a single year, so the re-known of Veuve Clicquot is measured by the ongoing performance of Yellow Label. It is the sturdiness of Pinot Noir, which gives the Yellow Label its classical structure, with a touch of Pinot Meunier to add roundness. Chardonnay brings a certain elegance and finesse, essential for the harmony and balance of the wine. Grapes from as many as 60 different vineyards go to the blending of Yellow Label. Traditionally, the proportion of each grape variety used is 55% Pinot Noir, 15% Pinot Meunier and 30% Chardonnay. These figures vary slightly from year to year according to conditions. The blender has to achieve the total consistency of taste, colour and bouquet which makes Yellow Label so immediately recognisable, so utterly reliable. He will draw on priceless Reserve wines for the blend: from 25% to 35%, sometimes 40%. Each of these older wines, perhaps 8 years old, is kept separately to preserve the unique qualities of the vineyard and the vintage. First, Yellow Label looks beautiful: golden yellow, with a foaming necklace of tiny bubbles. Next, it is so pleasing to the nose; initially reminiscent of white fruits and raisins, then of vanilla, and later of biscuits. Note the fine balance between the younger, 'fruity' wines and the older 'toasty' wines, which made up the final assembly. The first sip delivers all the freshness and forcefulness so typical of Yellow Label, with a symphony of fruit taste following on. Here is a true member of the Brut family: powerful, well structured, admirably vinous. The lingering aromas echo and re-echo, with each fruit or spice note distinct. Veuve Clicquot Yellow Label manages to reconcile two opposing factors (3 x 1.5 Litres) Price: £207.72

Description: Founded in 1846 by the brothers Jules and Auguste Devaux, the Champagne House of Devaux was taken over by Madame Augusta Devaux, one of Champagne's great characters who ran the company with much energy and skill. The positive impact that she made on the company lead it to be renamed Maison Veuve Devaux when she died. Today the House of Veuve A. Devaux is located in the magnificent setting of Domaine de Villeneuve and is part of co-operative that has some 800 growers contributing to the blends, making it the largest Champagne house in the region. This stylish cuvée is then aged for a minimum of 3 years in the cellars before release.
