Description:
Tasting Note Intense, stony, minerally Sauvignon with lime, gooseberry, freshly cut green pepper and passion fruit notes. Zippy, zesty and mouthwatering. A bit about Springfield Estate Brother and sister team Abrie and Jeanette Bruwer are the complete opposite of your typical university trained have-cultured-yeast-will-travel flying winemakers. Self-taught with a profound love of the arid, rocky, unforgiving Robertson terroir that they call home, the Bruwers make wines that have a distinct sense of place. These are wines hewn from the ground rather than made to a recipe in a lab and Springfield is now one of the first names to appear on any list of ‘Top SA Wineries’. If you ever get the chance to go and visit Jeanette and Abrie at Springfield, you'll understand why this single vineyard Sauvignon is called Life from Stone. The rocky, arid terroir looks just about the most inhospitable place a plant could choose to grow. Make no mistake, these vines really struggle for their art. Their efforts are well worth it though, as the hardship seems to push them to ever greater heights. Intense and minerally, this would beat many a top Sancerre in a pepsi challenge. (6 x 75 cl)

Les Vins De Vienne CHIRATS DE St CHRISTOPHE Hermitage
Description: Yves Cuilleron, Pierre Gaillard and François Villard, highly experienced Rhone Vignerons to a man, have resurrected the ancient area of Seyssuel, planting their first vines in February 1996 and breathing life back into an area that was producing quality wines for the Romans. The plots were chosen on schist soil with a Southern exposure, which were re-claimed and planted with the traditional varietals, Syrah and Viogner, around the Archbishop’s castle at Vienne. These hillside plots had fallen into neglect during the mid 20th century, when the cost of maintaining low yielding vines by hand was prohibitive. This wine is sourced from 93 hectares of steeply sloping hillsides that must be maintained by hand, the terraces have a Southeasterly aspect. The soil is granitic and rich in mica and the climate is of a moderate continental nature. Minimal handling is employed in the winery by limiting the amount of pumping and transfers as much as possible. Malolactic fermentation is performed in casks prior to 18 months ageing in new French oak casks. Racking is also kept to a minimum and clarification is with egg whites, there is no filtration. This Syrah is showing a concentrated, dark berry fruit dominated nose with more than a hint of minerals and stones. On the palate it is concentrated, tightly knit and serious with a masculine structure and bullish length. Its black fruits are well integrated with its rounded tannins and there's a purity about the middle palate which is classically Northern Rhone. Persistent, dry finish.

Description: The fruit comes from the Keyhole Ranch in Russian River Valley and is 75% fermented in stainless steel vat, and 25% in barrel in seasoned French oak with the lees stirred to add depth and complexity. Floral and spicy aromas give way to ripe apple and stone fruit flavours. Texture is amplified by the employment of partial barrel and malolactic fermentation, creating a depth and roundness of palate. The Seghesio Story begins in 1886 when Edoardo Seghesio departed his family's vineyards in Piedmonte, Italy for a new life in America. Like so many immigrants, he was drawn to Northern Sonoma County and the Italian Swiss Colony, to follow his passion for winemaking. The "colony," as it was known, hired immigrants for three year stints, providing room and board and then, a lump sum at the end of those three years enabling employees to buy land or set up a business in their new home. Soon, Edoardo rose through the ranks to winemaker. Yet, he yearned for home. The Colony's manager repeatedly encouraged him to stay and finally, it was his niece and the opportunity to purchase land that convinced Edoardo to remain. That young girl, Angela Vasconi and Edoardo were married in 1893. In 1895, they purchased a modest home in northern Alexander Valley, less for the home than the surrounding 56 acres Edoardo recognized as ideal vineyard land. They planted the "Home Ranch" that year to what has become the family's lifeline (12 x 75 cl) Price: £194.72
